Not to derail the thread, but it's interesting - they have Birk as the #2 Center in the NFL.

Also, our former C/G, Jason Brown, is #4.

The AFC North has 3 of the top six, Birk (#2), Pouncey (#3) and Alex Mack (#6)

Carry on...

BTW, I'm certain that Grubbs & Rice will be re-signed. Flacco's contract isn't up until 2013. Ngata, however, is the priority.

No worries, it'll get done.

It's already been discussed but Birk was actually the best center in pass pro last year. Bet you wouldn't have guessed that having watched our games.

I too believe that the trio of Rice, Grubbs and Flacco will all have shiny new contracts going into next season (maybe a little later for Flacco) as they are three of our key young stars.

Do you think Grubbs will get paid a similar amount to Yanda?

We need to somehow keep Rice,Grubbs and Flacco if we want to be successful for years to come. All three are necessary because they are the young core of this Offense. It would be sad to see Grubbs leave because hes been our most consistent O-lineman since hes arrived.

i don´t think that flacco will get a very huge contract if we don´t win the sb this year. he is not in the elite group yet and i think his payday comes with his third contract. rice is another story. if he is having a monster season this year, he´s gonna get a huge contract. he is a top 5 running back in the nfl and maybe the best receiver of all running backs. we need him and i thin he whants to be a raven. he will get his money.

grubbs will get too. birk will be off the team and will free up cap. i have no doubts that we can keep all our important personnel. all the offseason moves where focused on building a team that can play together for a long time. (not like eagles or jets who have a turnover every year from now on...)

Flacco might not get a Big Ben type contract, but considering hes a fringe top 10 QB, he still should demand a hefty contract. After all, its not easy to find stability at QB, and this franchise only knows it too well.

Grubbs is good, but I don't consider him elite. Yanda is more valuable because he offers more versatility, and is better in the running game (considering that were a run heavy offense).

Also if you factor in where they were drafted it gives you an idea of the value from each pick as well, elite guards can be found in late rounds. Just look at the Saints All Pro pairing of Evans and Nicks, or the Packers Josh Sitton etc, there were more undrafted guards in the last probowl than first round guards.

They said they will sign Joe this offseason coming up, you dont let your QB go into his last year of his contract..and Flacco wanted it done this year remember..so they will resign Joe next year
Totally agree, but they can't franchise Ngata again, so they MUST sign him first, or he's gone.

I think Grubbs will be in the ballpark, but Yanda has a little more value, cause he has played OT in a pinch. But both are premier guards. Interestingly, ESPN's rankings have Yanda ranked at #6 in the NFL, Grubbs at #10. That's impressive, when you realize there are 64 starting guards in the NFL.

Grubbs is a better guard but Yanda's ability to be a serviceable RT definitely adds to his value. I will still go with the guy who plays the natural position better grubbs.

As for Scouts Inc, the fact that Birk is rated the #2 center in the NFL is laughable to me. Anyone who watched last year knows he has CLEARLY lost a couple steps since he was in that league.

And JARED GAITHER is at 77. Based on what? His terrible work ethic, his bad back, or the one solid game he plays every other year?

I thought the list had tons of negatives.

Yes that list is ridiculous.

Matt Ryan at #50, Eli at 88, Romo at 91 and Flacco at 115?

The author (Matt Williamson) obviously only catches the highlights on SportsCenter.

I believe that Grubbs should have been in the Pro bowl by now, but he hasn't made it yet...
Yanda has received a lot of praise because of his versatility playing multiple positions.
It could be that I have underrated Yanda over the years, because he would step in as injury plugger. Because I can remember Jason brown at center and Chester at guard Willie Anderson , mulitalo. With Yanda mainly coming in on Jumbo Packages.

When I Read through that list I also was shocked by the Ranking of Gaither, whom didn't play a down of football last year at all and wasn't exactly a Pro Bowler before the injury. Sure he has shown potential for good but we have already seen his potential for bad also.

I saw plenty of iffy rankings in there such as justin smith being ranked higher than Jared Allen and many other pass rushers.

Also at the beginning of the Top 200 list, it mentions they watched hours of game footage to rank these players. So ummm Gaither didnt play last year I seriously doubt they watched game footage from 2 yrs ago to rank one player. And if they were viewing years of footage then I don't know how they went about ranking Reggie Wayne. Maybe I over looked it but I didnt see Wes welker or ochocinco either... How could Jared Allen rank so low Tamba Hali so high when they played in KC together with Allen recording double-digits then also Hali has had 2 solid seasons. That situation was similar to what just happen in Carolina with Charles Johnson he was a decent player for a few years while peppers got double triple teamed peppers leaves he has a solid season and is all of sudden "better " than Freeney. No way lol
I understand wanting to give players their recognition for a great season but if u grade some guys on last yrs great season, then u shouldn't go and grade guys like Tony romo off of past years performances.

Easy to say Grubbs is better when Yanda played out of position last year. Yanda allows us to do more. I would say they are about even until Yanda's versatility comes into the discussion.

I realize there was more to the quote (I was just quoting a specific part of it). I was just emphasizing the fact that based on the word too he obviously knew that Grubbs doesn't play Tackle in the NFL.
Okay, Im even more confused now then seeing that my initial statement a few pages back was just simply stating that Grubbs did not play tackle in college. That's all....That took a lot out of me ;)

To answer the question, I'd have to say it goes to Grubbs. Seems his versatility extends into the defensive side of the ball as well. As just a straight guard is concerned, I think its too close to really argue over.

Off topic, but Justin Smith is an exceptional player. He's as dominant a defensive end as you'll see and he puts up 4-3 End numbers while playing as a 3-4 End.

Grubbs is REALLY underappreciated by us and we won't realise it until/if he leaves. Considering how inconsistent the Left Tackle spot has been it's quite something that he's kept his play at such a high level.

Oh, and he was playing through a nagging injury for most of last year.

If we're talking who is the better gaurd? No question, it's Grubbs.
If we're talking who is the better football player? No question, it's Yanda.

I agree with this statement. Grubbs does everything solid at the Guard position. Is very undervalued but its a good thing that we rarely hear his name.

Yanda is versatile.

Can't really pick one outright.

My view is Ben Grubbs is the better Guard and not as versatile as Yanda. Yanda is very versatile and can play guard, tackle or if need be center.... apart from that both are tough and durable with the edge going to Yanda.

Just to illustrate how tough Grubbs is, Kris Jenkins career with the Jets ended after he was pushed back by Grubbs....
