They're saying that it could rapidly intensify again once it's away from the Bahamas.

Know for a fact the Outer Banks of NC have started their evacuations. Ocracoke is being evacuated now and the folks on Hatteras Island will be gone by Friday. Even though it's still too far out to be 100% certain, they're saying OBX will probably take a direct hit.

As for me, I'm far enough inland AND away from rivers that I'll be ok. I just have to do flood prep in my basement storage room before Irene gets here. I am not going to risk losing friends' artwork and my earliest photography.

Hopefully it doesn't decide to roll up the bay. I live on an island right off the Bay bridge, and this place got crushed during Isabel. Anything coming up the bay would definitely call for an evacuation.

Oh yeah, I'm sure some freak front will turn it west right over us. But hey, if it cancels the first week of school without annihilating my house, I'm all for it. From what I can see, if that track shifts 50 miles west, I'll be refining my swimming technique. All it takes is whatever is steering this thing to slow up for a few hours, and we have a real problem.

Nope...the rain we're getting right now is a BIG frontal system that moved west. Irene's not supposed to get here before Sunday.
