Jah Reid Grade Against Chiefs

17 posts in this topic

Interesting look, play by play of Jah Reid, he was graded on each play by James Walker over at ESPN

pretty good look at how he played

"Reid's first-half grade: +14 points

AFC North blog analysis: I was encouraged by Reid's potential. He helped his standing with last week's performance. Reid has a strong base and positions himself well in the running game. He's still raw in pass protection. Reid doesn't have quick feet and struggles with blitz recognition. But he should pick up blitzes better with experience. It remains to be seen if Reid will be ready for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. But Reid already appears to be a better option than Cousins at right tackle."

He'll get better at blitz recognition with experience

Ya sounds like he's good one on one (although Tyson Jackson isn't exactly a great pash rusher), but once there's a blitz he's completely lost. I think he'll need help from Ricky Williams or Vonta Leach in the backfield.

Hes an impressive guy. He has caught on quick, he works hard. He has all the natural athletic ability to succeed. I now see why they were so high on him when they snagged him in the 3rd. If hes this good already I think he will be a great RT for us for years to come.

It sounds like he's doing well so far, I think he'll be able to figure out the blitz after he watches the tape and learns from experience, either way I think the OL will get it together, on twitter it said Mark LeVoir practiced with first team today

I thought he actually played very well in both preseason games. Although, that may only be by comparison... Cousins...

Good article. I was watching him in depth during a re watch. He played solidly though when he gets beat, he gets beat bad.

Ya looks like Mark LeVoir is our starting RT for 9/11 unless Oz makes another signing. That scares me, I'm not sure if I'd rather have him or Jah there. Although I do trust Oz and he has obviously scouted this guy and believe he has the potential to be a solid starting Tackle.

Its too early to make definitive statements, but I think Reid will be a very nice RT for us in the future. However, I am not yet convinced that he will be ready for week 1 action against the Steelers. I would feel much more comfortable with Yanda at RT and...ugh...Cousins at RG until Reid is more experienced in pass-protection. I think Reid will definitely be the starter at RT at some point this season, but slow feet and inability to read blitzes is a nightmare combination when going up against Woodley, Harrison, and the rest of Dick LeBeau's Defense.

Moving Yanda to RT will hurt our run game a bit, but I think it is more important to keep Flacco upright especially against the Steelers.

I think they really want Yanda to stick at RG, so LaVoir or Reid will start at RT, if they need help they will put a TE on that side or have Ricky Williams, or Leach help in pass protection

Mark LaVoir got the reps with the first team today, we'll have to see how he plays...but I think Yanda will be at RG, and in time Jah Reid can play RT

I agree, Yanda is a Pro-Bowl caliber RG, not quite as good at RT. He's good, definitely our best RT option, but I think that Yanda at RG + Reid/LaVoir at RT is better than Cousins at RG + Yanda at RT.

My only problem is, if you give Reid/Lavoir help (with a TE/Leach), you're putting Oher alone vs. James Harrison. Oher at RT is excellent, but Oher at LT needs help with rushers of Harrison's ability.

You can't have lesser quality OTs on both sides...

Maybe LaVoir can be the stop-gap then. I just dont like the idea of starting Reid at RT if he is still struggling in pass-protection. I would much rather have Yanda at RG as well, but the majority of the Steeler's pass-rush comes off the edge and I am not sure Reid will be ready to handle it. If Yanda is our best option at RT for that match-up I dont have a problem with him playing there. I'm not saying Yanda should stay at RT, but he has done well against Woodley in the past.

I think Reid could start week 1. I would be a little concerned about his blitz pickup flaws, but he cant get better at that without experience. I think Lavoir may be a good RT, but he may have just worked with the ones today to get more reps and to learn the playbook faster. He may be the first RT, but it might have just to get him adjusted. Who knows? I just know Reid is lightyears better than Cousins.

You also have to remember that Matt Birk was out at center and a young, inexperienced Bryan Mattison was in his place. No question Birk is light years ahead of Mattison in reading blitzes and calling out assignments. A guy like Birk could really help Jah along in recognizing his blocking assignments better. I would like to see Jah week 1 against the Steelers. Judging by his progression from week 1 of preseason to week 2, I think he will be ready. If we were opening up against any other team it wouldn't be a question who would start.

So far it sounds like LaVoir is solid in pass protection and can pick up blitzes, not sure about how he does in the run game, we'll have to see what happens as the weeks go on...

I think our OL will come together...
