And how much experience would a guy from another team have in our System?

So it goes both ways. Experience doesn't make you a better option all the time. The only reason Tyrod isn't viewed as capable is because he hasn't been put into a position to prove he can be capable.

What made Flacco capable in 2008, him being a first rounder? No, he was a great talent, and this "Team" allowed him to just make plays when needed.

That is the same approach the Ravens would take with Tyrod "IF" he needed to spell Flacco for a game or two.

I don't think either of us are wrong, because you just don't know how anyone would perform under the circumstances.

Cam has a very complex system and any guy that brought in over the next few weeks would get zero reps with the WR/TEs he'd be throwing to in a real game, because we have already started gameplaning. So the training camp style is over.

I just think at this point, Tyrod wouldn't be a terrible option. If we bring a vet in, great, If we don't, great. Lets get Tyrod as many reps as possible and ride out.
[/quote]
I hear ya'. Like you said, any vet we could bring in would have comparable experience within our system. I just think that someone like Charlie Batch, who will probably be released in the next 2 weeks, would give us a security blanket. An experienced vet can read defenses and call basic plays, and execute more easily, perhaps, than a rookie. Most teams go with 3 QBs, and Hunter Caldwell adds little to the equation.

You're right though - it probably would have been better if a backup would have been signed a month ago, if that is what Ozzie decides to do now.

However, I think your last point is the most significant. Tyrod has gotten considerable playing time in each of the last 2 games, and that can only speed his development. If Jake Delhomme had been signed, Tyrod's time might have been halved. And I have noticed an improvement, between the first half of the Eagles game to the last quarter of the Chiefs game, in Tyrod's performance.

Sorry for getting a little off topic but this really frustrates me. I know you can never look at one reason why your season ended the way it did, but people need to realize we tied the steelers and allowed them to win the AFC north BECAUSE flacco failed as a leader and a quarterback in week 2 against an horrific bengals team last year. After that game, flacco had the second best passer rating in the nfl behind brady showing he hates losing and improves with every game he plays, but theres a prime example of how one game can ruin your season, and that was our starter not even a back up. Tyrod has experience playing in big games in college, and i believe the pressure wouldnt affect him. Not many teams have a gameplan for a quarterback as explosive as him ( think back to when the Ravens played Dennis Dixon who can also run, im pretty sure a last minute touchdown by flacco to housh won us that game).
Taylor is explosive, has decent accuracy that is getting better, and knows how to flat out make plays. Please look up tyrod scramble touchdown throw against stanford in the orange bowl last year as a prime example. A veteran is fine as he will be less likely to make mistakes, but look at flacco his rookie year. He relied on the defense and was able to minimize mistakes and have a pretty decent season. Taylor is much more explosive than flacco and i believe for 2 or 3 games on pure play making ability he can guide this team. if its an extended stint then hopefully in those 2 games he gains enough experience to get better each day. I just cant see the use in signing a vertern guy unless its for the minimum contract to come in for a year to hold a clipboard.

I'm not sure if this has been pointed out yet:

ESPN is running a poll, with the question, "Should Tyrod be the Ravens' #2 QB?"

Currently, 68% say yes, he should be #2, 32% say we need an experienced backup.

Obviously, those numbers could change, based upon how he does vs. the Skins this weekend...

I saw it and I think a lot of people (68%) are forgetting how valuable a veteran backup is, not many rookies come into the league and have much success. It's true our running game and defense will help if Tyrod ever had to play a meaningful snap but there will be times in a game when a throw will be need to be made, will he make it? can he throw it?? will he even see it?

If we want to go to the SB, really you would want to have a backup plan, a veteran backup plan...say keep in touch with Bulger, tell him to stay in shape, if anything ever comes up he will already know the offense and we can bring him our of 'retirement' much like Indy did with Kerry Collins

:)

Me and PuRock had this discussion earlier. I COMPLETELY agree with you. Tyrod has a bright future, but the Ravens are a Super Bowl contender RIGHT NOW, and I would hate to put Taylor under the pressure of a playoff run, as a rookie.

We tied Pittsburgh at 12-4 last year, it was that close. One game CAN make a difference. It's not an insult to Tyrod to let him watch for a year, as a #3, and bring in some insurance.

Tryod's got talent, but IMO, he's not ready to step in, if Flacco gets hurt.

who is to say that he couldn't make those reads or throws as a rookie? you? me? i doubt it! just because other rookie QBs may not have done well at the nfl level doesn't mean that we "automatically" project that type of thinking on ALL rookies. this cat (Tyrod) started at VT as a red-shirt freshman. simply meaning; that he has the ability and the capability to be what the Ravens FO need him to be at the nfl level as well! Joe is our dude and we want him to be healthy the entire season but if he goes down, Tyrod would be able to assist the team when called upon.

Virtually every team in the NFL carries 3 QBs. Hunter Caldwell is PS material. So, I fully expect Ozzie to bring in someone else... No insult to Tyrod, but in 18 days, if the Steelers are leading 21-13 with 8 minutes left, and Flacco is out, I'm not sure Tyrod is up to the task. It's not profitable to risk the AFC North crown because we don't want to hurt Taylor's confidence.

Andy Dalton is a rookie, and he's playing like it, in his first 2 preseason games. Nothing wrong with that, everyone has to learn, but remember our first round draft pick, Joe Flacco, threw 1 TD and 7 interceptions his first 5 games. That kind of a performance by Taylor could doom our Super Bowl chances.

i am with you!

but when Joe did all of that...remember....he was initially, our 3rd string QB that was magically promoted (due to injury and illness) to the starter over the other 2 QBs on the roster. lol! and Dalton is playing like a rookie and looks bad. hopefully, Tyrod will continue to improve as the FO keeps throwing him out there to gain the in-game experiences he needs to be a good QB in the nfl.

Oh, they will - he'll play at least the 4th quarter tonight and most of the game next week. I think the FO is holding off getting a 3rd QB until the other teams' cuts are made, but also to give Tyrod more reps...

the only thing i have to say is not many teams know how to play against a guy like taylor right away. I mean vick came into the league not being able to hit the broad side of a barn but could run and led the falcons to the playoffs in his second year. taylor can run similar to vick and watching taylor all his time at virginia tech this guy has some very good accuracy. I would have no problem putting him in for a few games if need be because on pure explosiveness i believe he can lead our team with our defense and revamped running game to some wins
