(Torrey) Smith Is A Project WR Compared To Reed/Doss/Williams

I think torrey needs a break from Twitter again... he just doesn't seem focused. Hahaha. Jim Hostler has a lot of work to do with this kid.

I don't think it has to do with his hands (they probably are bad), but in college he always caught the ball with his body and didn't snatch the ball out of the air. He's still doing it now and I am just curious as to how a Wide Receiver coach goes about fixing or reversing that.

I think we need to get him a lot of snaps next week against backups to boost his confidence. So many of his snaps have come early in games against 1st and 2nd teamers. He just needs a chance to get in rhythm and get his confidence up.

But when dropped balls been on the knack on him before coming in the league, and he starts to drop some, its should come together.

Well yea. His hands just weren't going to become perfect in a night. There's been several WR's in this league that came in with mediocre hands, and worked on them to become solid players.

While those are some examples of players with catching ability but lacking a burst and gone on to be excellent, there have been players just the same who don't make it. Of course hands>no hands, but it's all speculation so far that he won't ever develop them. It would be nice for him to come in, snag everything and make plays..hasn't happened. On the bright side, he's been able to find space and if he starts to flash hands, he can do some things with that.

When he gets comfortable which he doesn't seem to be yet, he will be that much faster and the game will be that much slower. (ideally) Positive note- He looks to block somebody down field. The effort is there

Well again this is the pre-season, and I don't put much stock in to it.

But some of the problems I see are exactly the reason I wasn't a fan of him as a prospect before and after we drafted him.

Yeah, it was pretty established that his small hands caused him to drop a lot of balls. But I'll give Torrey a bit more time than 3 preseason games to establish him a bust *cough* *cough*

i think that Torrey is really nervous. he knows that Boldin and Evans are already #1 & #2 WRs on the roster and that he, T. Doss and E Reed are fighting for that #3 spot. right now...he knows that Doss is ballin his tail off and that he is not looking to good.

I said it when you guys first drafted him ... I think he can develop into a deep threat #2 WR... It will take him a couple of years tho... The guy is raw....Maryland didnt ask him to run the route tree a lot.... They ran mostly screens and go deep routes... His biggest problem right now is that he is a body catcher... With a big arm QB and the NFL CB's.... Body catching is not good... The bullet passes will bounce off your chest and DB's will get their hands in there to get pass deflections (body catchers)

I don't think this has to do with anything. He's a rookie and we used a 2nd round pick on him, it's not like he's going to get cut.

He has small hands for a Wide Receiver and he catches the ball with his body, but like others have said it is fixable and I believe because of his character and work ethic, he's going to fix it sooner than later in his career and become one of the best, if not the best Wide Receiver in our lackluster history for drafting Wide Receivers.

i agree completely...torrey smith doesnt have a problem with catching with his hands...he has a problem with using his hands at all. This kid wil take some time because he has to learn an entire new way of catching, not just learning to catch the ball better. Watch the dropped pass on the sideline he had towards the end of the second half...the ball went straight into his chest and bounced right off...evans, doss, boldin, reed stick out the hands, snatch the ball out of the air, and tiptoe that sideline. Give him some time, he has the work ethic, he'll learn

Simple (but hypothetical) Question. If Torrey was a 5th round pick, would you still say his speed and potential justify him being ahead of L.Williams in our depth chart?

We say its only 3 pre-season games so you can't judge what he may become thus the potential factor (which is mostly true). But consider this, many teams including us, will be making cuts soon if not already to people who also have potential, and they were only given 3 to 4 pre-season games.

L. Williams has played better than Torrey as a WR and better than everyone as a KR, but he may not make the team. And if that happens we all can justify it because Torrey was a 2nd rd pick with speed and potential. I like Torrey, he may become the greatest WR since Jerry Rice, and Tebow may be the next Elway (that's not a knock, it honestly could happen). My point is there are people who have shown that they are ready, right now. Doss may not be the fastest rookie but he has the hands of a Greek God. L. Williams seems to be a scrappy guy, the rocky type, he just does what needs to be done - nothing flashy. Reed - what can I say about this guy, he has speed and hands, you give up nothing with this guy. While people who have fought blood, sweat and tears in the pre-season prepare to be released, we can only hope, Torrey lives up to his potential. Again, I like the guy, just my current observations.
