Pernell McPhee is Impressive (Preseason Week 2)

We really don't need Redding anymore.

I'm more than happy with Jones and Mcphee.

I guess we could keep him for depth, but I hope he doesn't take much if any playing time away from these guys.

If McPhee can keep it up, I wouldn't be surprised to see McPhee be the starting LE in the season. I mean I know it's odd to start a 5th round Rookie but hey if keeps things up, he'll show why he should be starting. From there I guess cut Redding, and have McPhee starting and Arthur Jones as the backup to McPhee.
It looks to me that Art Jones is playing more of the NT when he is in while McPhee has been at the LE. They both have showed some solid stuff so far and I'm excited to see more of both no matter where they fit in.

I love this dude. Him Ngata Cody Jones is gonna be the best run defense of the future. How I feel in next years draft we could target a OL,MLB or C now. Knowing the depth we got at DL,CB,WR,RB,OLB with the 32nd pick. I feel real good about this team. We will shut alot of people up and if we blitz all season like we did yesterday I think we could have 40 sacks. Yah. Also I bet McClain feels so stupid after seeing Leach put his head down and go beast mode

When we drafted him they said that he had a high motor.. Wow this kid impresses me. He is absolutely relentless in the pass rush. Deceptively fast for 280 pounds, great burst off the line. This kid is going to be a stud theres no doubt. Thanks to the lock out and more emphasis put on the draft... we may have just had our best draft in recent memory. All these kids looks like they can play.

I'm really digging McPhee. I'm a huge believer and now a fan of his. My favorite rookie. I can't believe he was a 5th round pick. The only thing I regret about last night is Gaither not playing so we could own him too.

i agree mcphee is a beast, laqaun is making t. smith look like <crap>.
Believe it or not. T. Smith is being covered by the teams #1 CB. I know that you might not understand what that means so I'll break it down. Torrey Smith is a rookie just removed from the collegiate level of play. That is a big step to the NFL level. Hypothetically hes a college WR going up against professional CBs and not only professional CBs, but professional CBs that play to the highest level in the NFL. What do you want him to do? Get open? well he did, quite a few times actually. Even on Nnamdi Asomugha he was open a few times but Joe didnt look his way. He has been overthrown on most throws that went his way. Now, LaQuan Williams may have a great amount of talent, but the CBs on him are insanely weaker in skill than the CBs guarding Torrey. Basically college level athletes are sticking him. I hope this helps you understand. Personally, I like LaQuan and hope he makes the team. Hes got to step into getting reps with the 1st and 2nd team for us to really see what he is capable of against real NFL talent.

Now about McPhee. Jesus, this guy is looking like he should have been a 2nd Rounder. Insane to believe that hes making a huge impact and he is a 5th Round Rookie. I love him as well and hope he gets on the line come 9/11!!!

I just can't positively say enough about this kid. He is such a steal from the 2011 draft.

Nobody can see McPhee's beast mode in the draft except Ozzie.....

I don't think it would be smart to cut Redding because what if Ngata went down with an injury or something? If we cut him we would be pretty thin on D-Line, plus I think he's got another good year in him and then by next year Art and Pernell can take over. With those 2 along with Cody, Ngata and Suggs (He is really a D-Lineman for most snaps) we have a pretty beastly D-Line.

I think we should definitely keep Redding. He gives us depth, has experience(could teach the young guys a thing or two) and he showed great awareness in the playoffs last year. I can't wait to see what praises I'll be singing about McPhee after next week's game.

Only fools think of cutting Redding when this is his last year of the contract and he is a solid vet DE. We might resign him for depth, and he's only 30 btw.

Give torrey a break. He was covered by asomough and starters for 1st two preseason. Laquan fought vs. Practice squad/backups. Smith is going to catch some amazing balls. He just needs to get better being open.

A few weeks ago the fanbase was predicting garbage season records for us because we got rid of some vets. Now they want to get rid of some more! Crazy.

It's some classic stuff, right? I used to think our fan base was a little better than that but some where down the road we have picked up a few let's just call them weak minded individuals.

You said it. Every large group of people is inevitably the same. Most overreact and have a real short memory, some are overconfident, some know nothing, some think they know everything, some are flat-out insane, and a few are logical. I like to consider myself one of the insane ones.

I'd rather see Boldin in the slot in a 3 WR set. He excels in the slot.

Yeah, I'm just saying Torrey Smith was being covered by Nnamdi Asomugha on some plays and Brandon Flowers some plays: those are some of the top cornerbacks in the game, and he's been in an NFL training camp before preseason all of what? Two weeks?

His head is still spinning. Meanwhile Lee Evans is making plays on Jalil Brown (#30 on that floater burn fade play was Jimmy Smith's old college buddy)

In that big play up the middle of the field to Anquan Boldin the defender basically had to choose to either cover Smith or Boldin and since Smith was the closer guy (he got to that point of the zone faster), he rode Smith and Flacco passed to a wide open Anquan Boldin. So that's an example of Smith already opening up the field for Boldin.

One can see all this in the game day highlights.

But props to Evans' hands. I didn't doubt he still had speed (like some naysayer Steeler fans), but I wasn't too sure about his hands but he showed them on that near comeback pattern out of bounds and especially the quick slant while he was covered by Brandon Flowers.

It might just be the Chiefs (Bucs hammered them 25-0, and the Bucs got hammered by NE), but this team at least seems like it's getting demonstrably better. I hope Cousins is a great guard.
Yea the same thing was true in the Eagles game where Torrey ran off Aso and the Safety to free up space for Ray Rice on the long 3rd down play.

Although he's a WR, the measure of how well he did or didn't play can't be based solely on catches.

With that said, he has struggled a bit with timing and spacing in his route running, but I think that was to be expected seeing how he was labeled as rough around the edges in that area.

But to even be thinking about him being a bust right now is foolish imo.

If you watch Redding, he's doing the same things McPhee is doing, but he's doing it against starting offensive lineman. So i'd slow up a bit on McPhee pushing Redding off this roster.

However with that said, you gotta love what you see from McPhee. He'll definitely have a role in our Dline rotation this year.

This defense just looks so much more comfortable in Chuck's defense. I know it's only been 2 preseason games, but I love it.

I completely agree, Ravensfan23. Our defense also looks more in sync. And the scary thing is this was without the real #52(not the imposter that was laid out by Vonta "The Tank" Leach).

Him and Art Jones are definatly going to be major players on our D-line in the coming years. For right now, they are Probably what make up the greatest D-Line Depth in the entire League
Would be a really beastly 4 man front for certain situations to see Mcphee, Jones, Cody, and Ngata all with their hands in the dirt, getting after the qb...

" McPhee was on first-round radar screens prior to this season, and he definitely has the talent to return to such a status. However, he must finish the season much stronger than he started it before showing his stuff at the combine next spring. For now, McPhee looks like a possible third-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft."

--just wanted to share one scouting report on this kid before the draft. This one and many others i have read all had Mcphee from the first to third rounds BASED ON TALENT. This kid is a beast. Cutting redding would be a terrible idea as we would leave the job to a 5th round rookie and a i believe 5th round 2nd year in arthur jones. Redding is a vet and we'll teach these guys how to be professionals as they eventually take over his spot. I love the ravens defense this year because Ozzie hasnt filled the headlines with aquisitions, but rather inside and drafted guys stepping up. The patriots had two rookie tight ends like we did last year and they stepped up. thats what makes teams great and thats what will make or break the ravens this year...and so far i believe its going to make us.

Remember than he is doing all this at 280lb, with his motor and physical skills he could develop into something very special in the 265-270lb range.

Well said, and I believe that Art Jones also fell from first round status because of an injury. It seems like we could have two steals on our hands.

yes, that makes complete sense BloodRaven. NO! He is a 3-4 DE!!! Why would he drop weight?!?! We have Kindle and Kruger as backup OLBs, McPhee wouldnt even see the field at OLB. He is a DE, and he can stay at 280. I dont understand either how losing 15 pounds would make him special... that doesnt make any sense to me.

We don't run our defense out of a 3-4, we played 54% of our snaps out of a 4-3 which technically makes him a 4-3 DE. Pernell Mcphee is a lot of things but a two gapping 3-4 DE he clearly isn't.

Oh yeah, weight loss will make him quicker. Whoooosh.

weight loss will also make him less stronger. he won´t come like a bus at you. more like a SUV. i say let´s keep him as he is right now and see what he is able to bring to the table during the regular season against starting tackles and guards...

i like him a lot and hope that he can keep progressing...

Im going out on a limb and saying, barring injury he will be the best player we took in that Draft,. He has things in his game, that coaches die for.
1. He works hard. Evidence was the sweat on the jersey.
2. Motor that does not stop when he gets knocked down. He got up and still made plays.
3.Heavy hands to keep the offensive guys from grabbing him. Wow
4. Text book tackling on a quarterback. He laid out, head up, with the shoulder in the numbers. Loved it.

We have to get this guy on the field this year! Oz and company did it again!
