Pernell McPhee is Impressive (Preseason Week 2)

107 posts in this topic

I didnt see anything on him but I will admit I didnt look hard. I have been impressed with how he has performed thus far as well as a few other rookies such as Reid, Doss, Taylor, and Allen. He has applied pressure no matter who he has faced I know understand what his coach was talking about when he praised him.

I still have to say that Doss is probally my favorite rookie but McPhee is my second. The undrafted rookies such as Torrey friend has really impressed me as well. McPhee, Jones, and Kruger has really shown a extra level in getting to thru the O-line.

I love McPhee as well. Hes gonna be another one of those later round steals by Ozzie once again! I really like Doss and to me right now i have Doss > Torrey Smith.... I think Torrey Smith has bust written all over him ( I hope not )..... as a matter of fact i have the OTHER WR out of Maryland by the name of Laquan Williams out performing Smith so far.

He has that motor and rush passion. That'll go a long way in this org.

It's funny because he looked small on the field to me. But I think he's like 6'3" 280. Same height as me but with 60 more lbs.

You do realize that Torrey Smith is going against the #1 defense and LaQuan Williams has practice squad/4th string cornerbacks covering him?

Not to excuse Torrey Smith, but there have been several times where he's been open and just not looked at, or Flacco threw to Boldin/Dickson instead. Flacco is still having the major problem of only being able to stare down his first receiver. He's seemingly unwilling to utilize "progressions." Either the guy who is drawn up to get the ball is open, or bust.

McPhee is clearly impressing. Our young DL is getting better and McPhee is going to be a big piece of that puzzle imo.

I'd like to know how McPhee didn't get 15 sacks last year in college. We have to find a way to get him on the field. Interior pass rush is HUGE and this guy brings it.

I understand who Smith is going against as opposed to Williams. But Smith dosent look good at all to me IMO....I mean Tandon Doss looks way better and he faces good competition too

They had him playing out of position at Mississippi State, and he was often forced to stand up and drop back rather than rush the passer as he would in our scheme.

Him and Art Jones are gonna be a heck of a tandem for years to come. Love what I've seen outta both of those guys thus far in preseason. Certainly validates the coaches' praise throughout training camp. And good point in that this depth will keep our D fresh late in games, that was a big concern last year.

I wouldn't mind seeing Torrey get more snaps later in the game. So so that he can get a footing and some momentum. I also wouldn't mind seeing some other guys get more of a chance in the slot with Boldin and Evans.

I'd rather see Boldin in the slot in a 3 WR set. He excels in the slot.

Yeah, I'm just saying Torrey Smith was being covered by Nnamdi Asomugha on some plays and Brandon Flowers some plays: those are some of the top cornerbacks in the game, and he's been in an NFL training camp before preseason all of what? Two weeks?

His head is still spinning. Meanwhile Lee Evans is making plays on Jalil Brown (#30 on that floater burn fade play was Jimmy Smith's old college buddy)

In that big play up the middle of the field to Anquan Boldin the defender basically had to choose to either cover Smith or Boldin and since Smith was the closer guy (he got to that point of the zone faster), he rode Smith and Flacco passed to a wide open Anquan Boldin. So that's an example of Smith already opening up the field for Boldin.

One can see all this in the game day highlights.

But props to Evans' hands. I didn't doubt he still had speed (like some naysayer Steeler fans), but I wasn't too sure about his hands but he showed them on that near comeback pattern out of bounds and especially the quick slant while he was covered by Brandon Flowers.

It might just be the Chiefs (Bucs hammered them 25-0, and the Bucs got hammered by NE), but this team at least seems like it's getting demonstrably better. I hope Cousins is a great guard.

I knew he was going to be good because I learned from our good friend Trevor Pryce, that you have to have sweet feet to play in the NFL.

LOVE this guy. The way he appears to get low and use speed and power to beat his man reminds me of those horrible matchups with Dwight Freeney.

I was very upset that the Ravens did not pick a pass rusher in the earlier rounds. I was very high on Justin Houston and wanted to draft him badly. So to see the Ravens pickup a pass rusher in the 5th round I was like "Finally! But too little too late" Of course that's why I'm an armchair GM instead of a real one! :D

Mcphee is a violent player (Chuck Pagano's words) and he has great hands to beat the opposing lineman and get around them. He has a relentless motor and comes at you none stop. The Ravens did an excellent job scouting him. Seeing Art Jones develop and both of them causing havoc on the DL was a great site to see. Now with Haloti Ngata working on become a better pass rusher I love the talent there is on the defensive line and having the ability to get after the QB.

If the McPhee and Jones continue to develop and become great pass rushers it will be perfect for the Ravens because they'll open up those gaps and allow the LBs to get through and create havoc in the backfield. Having guys you can rotate on the DL and consistently provide a pass rush is great because
they will be fresh and get after the tired OL who've been in the game constantly and It will greatly benefit the LBs and allow them to also get after the QB which is great for our Terrell Suggs and also guys like Paul Kruger and Sergio Kindle because they will have strong guys in front of them. I am really liking the young talent the Ravens are adding to the defense.

Him and Art Jones are definatly going to be major players on our D-line in the coming years. For right now, they are Probably what make up the greatest D-Line Depth in the entire League

I remember I was disappointed that the Steelers snagged the last 3-4 OLB that I thought could help us in the pass rush right before we took McPhee. Now that guy is going to ride the bench in Pittsburg and I can't even remember his name. I'm so glad we got McPhee now.

In addition to the way he was used, he was double teamed very frequently, and he may have had a "mysterious unreported injury" I know a lot of players will play through some injuries that will affect play a la our own Jarret Johnson.

I had no idea who he was till last night. I hope he gets a few reps with starters. Id like to see if he can compete with Mt.Cody(Kelly Greggs position last year).

No way Mcphee will play nose tackle. He is a 3 technique defensive end. He will be competing with guys like Redding and Jones.

I haven't seen that kind of inside rush on this team since Pryce in 2006. Especially on a defense predicated on pressure and blitzing (which I expect us to be this year), collapsing the pocket is huge. That's the difference between a guy stepping up and avoiding a blitzer then finding a hole in the coverage and the blitzer stripping the ball and taking it back for 6. I'm really excited about what McPhee brings to the D.

McPhee seems to be a playmaker and always in the backfield and around the ball. He could be one of the steals in this draft if he continues to improve and sees time with the starters.

If McPhee can keep it up, I wouldn't be surprised to see McPhee be the starting LE in the season. I mean I know it's odd to start a 5th round Rookie but hey if keeps things up, he'll show why he should be starting. From there I guess cut Redding, and have McPhee starting and Arthur Jones as the backup to McPhee.

I would not want to cut redding he played well last year, and I like the fact that we have so much depth because in a rotation with guys that can all rush the passer we are going to be able to where out O lines which is going to make it all the easier in the 4th quarter..

I would still keep Corey Redding because while he isn't a great DE he is still very solid and made good strides during the later part of last season to secure the LE spot. He provides NFL experience and being a veteran player who wasn't as affected by the lockout as McPhee/Jones were. I like their potential but they were both late round picks and will still take time to develop so Redding will be a good "place holder" until they come into their own.

Meh I've never really liked Redding, and while i wouldnt cut him because I like the depth and the ability to rotate guys on line in order to keep them fresh, I wouldnt mind seeing him being moved out of the starting spot to 2d or 3d on depth chart. Art Jones and Mcphee are going to be very solid for years to com next to suggs and ngata on that beast of a line.

The way McPhee was being misused at Mississippi State was what caused him to drop to us. He was used as a hybrid DL, which means he dropped back and covered and also pass rushed. He had to focus on both. Here, all he has to do is do what he did in JuCo when he got 20 sacks in one season. I'm telling ya, we have another diamond in the rough here; and he's in a position where the diamond in the rough is just what the Doctor ordered for our team. Jones/Redding/McPhee; very good depth on the D-Line.
