[Merged] Jimmy Smith & Cary Williams (Week 2 Preseason)

He has arguably been our best corner these last two games. Do you think he can make that leap, into starting?

I believe I am a believer now! I think he can.....Gave up a few receptions (one for a TD), but he has played extremely well! Can't wait to see him again against Wash next week!

Ya I think he could be a good #2 corner or a solid #1. He did get beat at the end of the quarter on that slant route when the Cheifs scored that TD, but other than that he was excellent. With him and Jimmy playing that tight press and Ngata, Cody, Suggs, and co. blitzing; we will be even better this year defensively. Josh Wilson? Who's that?

Very contrary to last week at the Eagles, both teams played a lot of physical, press coverage. I thought a lot of these CBs on the field tonight, mainly Cary, got away with contact down field. If he does that in the reg. season, he may be penalized a lot. Just something to look out for.

This is the first we've seen Jimmy play for extended time. What are your impressions?

I think he's going to meet or even exceed everyone's expectations. Bowe (who is a Pro Bowler) still caught some passes, but not really because Jimmy was burned (see: Asante Samuel last night), but because Jimmy didn't think to complete the play. He was amazingly tight in his coverage, I was impressed with how physical he was. Once he gets a feel for the tempo of the NFL and improves his technique, I think he can become the shutdown corner everyone dreams of him being.

Id be surprised if he already hasnt. To me he is our Best CB, he needs to run against the #1 WRs in the regular season.

Cary did a phenomenal job for the first quarter and through most of the second, needs to work on those hands to turn those jumped routes into interceptions. Cary has great size and technique, besides Jimmy he's the corner I'd most like to see emerge as a #1 or #2 for us.

Those passes Cary let up on the last drive were disappointing, but our whole defense was out of sync on that drive so I wouldn't put to much emphasis on it.

Speaking of our corners, Jimmy was ALL OVER Bowe on every play, Bowe made two insane catches to beat him but Jimmy's coverage was absolutely flawless, just needed to locate the football and he could've had at least one interception. I was very impressed.

Webb looked shaky in coverage and I don't see him making improvements game to game. That said he made up for his coverage issues by tackling and blitzing well. Pagano will definitely find more ways to get him involved and he could become a potent weapon for us this year.

You pretty much nailed it. Bowes catches were spectacular and certainly not going to happen every week with that coverage!

I'm impressed. He got "beat" a few times, but that's to be expected. The good thing was that he was right there, he just didn't quite finish it.

I particularly liked his coverage on Bowe's first catch. It was tight man defense, and he would've had completed the play if he only turned his head around.

I loved Webb at the LOS....in coverage, eh. But blitzing and in run support he was phenomenal!

My sentiments are the same as the above, Jimmy's coverage was airtight. Just need to locate the ball and make the play! One thing I would note is that Jimmy matches up very well against Bowe, I'd be much more concerned with Jimmy going up against smaller, faster receivers like Welker, Holmes or Wallace. Jimmy's showed that he can play bump-and-run, play physical and stick to big, strong receivers, that's Jimmy's specialty. But to be an elite corner in this league he's got to be able to deal with the speed receivers like I mentioned before. I think that will be much more of a challenge for him.

I'd like to see him matched up with Mike Wallace week 1 and see how he does. I think with Cary on Hines Ward and our front 7 MAULING their weak O-Line, we can do very well against the team from the Squeel-city.

Good tight coverage but needs to track the ball more. Maybe this is something he needs to get used to since he was not thrown at much in college?

That was actually a knock on Jimmy coming out of college, that he did not consistently get his head turned around in coverage. This may lead to some PI calls. However, I loved what I saw tonight. Jimmy's going to be the shutdown corner we all envisioned.

I think he'll do fine against speedy receivers. Smith's fast himself. He ran a 4.42 forty. He'll be able to match just about any receiver's speed, plus be able to out-physical them in press man.

Cary played great tonight. I love Cary and Jimmy in press coverage. As mentioned before, Jimmy had great coverage, especially on a pro bowl guy who was voted as one of the top 100 in the NFL.

I didn't mind the TD Cary gave up, because when you have aggressive guys like Cary and Jimmy, they'll get caught on double moves sometimes, so you take the good with the bad.

I think the more they get to play with Ed and Pagano's aggressive defense the more comfortable they'll be.

I know it was only a small sample, but I just don't know how you can't allow Cary and Jimmy to play the majority of snaps with the first team next week in the dress rehearsal.

I really liked what i saw from the starting defense tonight. What a difference, press coverage and good tackling makes.

Williams has the attitude to be really corner. I really like his awareness and the way he jump that route was nice. I say put em at number 2.

Really Excited that we finally have 2 young. physical corners with great length and good speed. I was at the game and got to look at both of them more closely. I was especially impressed with how Williams was playing. Jimmy looked physical and tight to his man and got unlucky on some great catches by Bowe. What really got me pumped is that seeing Foxworth not with the starters made me realize how deep we could potentially be at a position we were relatively week at in the past. Webb looked very questionable and it seems like i've been seeing him have to chase down his man after a big completion recently. Overall, very pleased with our depth and physicality at CB.

I am stoked for our corners this year, they are looking better than I thought. Especially Williams, this whole defense is looking better than I thought they would. Vets playing like we expect, young guys stepping up. I am even more excited for this season.

We have 2 more games, but I think I'd be happy with Cary & Jimmy in the starting lineup. Jimmy held his own vs Bowe and Cary is very active looking, always breaking up passes and he's close to making some picks.

After just looking at the highlights of the catches Bowe made on Smith, it doesn't get any better than the coverage Smith had on him. I have been listen to you guys like Smith just sucked on those coverages and those were great catches made by Bowe, I mean great. Sure, Smith can work on a few things like turning his head around and playing the ball instead of the defender but those are easy learns. Smith is ready to start from Day 1 and I feel the same about Cary and I'm sure Pagano will go with this lineup for another preseason game, if not, the last two. I'm very excited about the potential of our starting CB tandem in "Jim Cary",lol.

Cary William impressed, except for that end-zone TD. Jimmy got beat by bowe several times. This was just a warm up...cant wait to see preseason g4 against atlanta falcons (roddy white vs jimmy)

.....and even on that TD catch on Cary, that was aight coverage. Also, y'all call someone catching the ball on you as getting beat? Sometimes as great as the coverage is, the catch and placement of the ball is even greater but that doesn't mean the CB got beat, just the WR made the play and the QB's placement of the ball was near to flawless.
