I disagree i think he can be great.it's just that hes only gonna get to that level if he wants too
Oher will be a good LT, just not a great one. I do see pro bowls in his future. If you want him to be great though, move him to RT.

do you know how hard it is to find left tackles? Unless you want to draft someone and coach them up for 3 years, we're better off with oher.
Doesn't mean we shouldn't draft someone else. Let him sit on the bench for a year or a year and change and watch Oher. Coach them up for three years? Have them sit for three years? They won't be ready to take the field as LT for three years? I wouldn't say that.

Is that just an intuition of yours? Because I'm pretty sure you want as fast a jump as you can get. The idea that he's giving the rusher more momentum seems pretty silly.
I play offensive line, and defensive line. I have an idea of what I'm talking about. When the rusher has more ground, he can "explode" into the tackle and destroy him. When the tackle/OL has too quick feet, he can lose his base, and won't be able to fight the bullrush as easily. Also, a quick jump like that allows an inside move.

If it's more than 3 seconds, that's on the QB and the receivers. It'd be nice if Mike could do what JO did and just take a guy ot of a play, but Mike gets us about 3 seconds, that's around what we need.
Yeah I'd agree with that. Hopefully there's less pressure on Oher now that Chester's been removed from the lineup. I don't think overall Reid will be much/any worse than Chester was last year.

When exactly did that happen? The last time we played the Colts was 2009, twice. And both times Gaither played LT and shut Freeney down. Try again.

We still need a "swing" guy that can play G/C... we seem to have enough RTs in camp.

I remember Gaither being out that game, though I may be wrong, either way, he still held Mathis to no sacks, which is also an impressive feat for a rookie.

And I do keep up with the news sir, but I think there was no way that a project, 6th round tackle was actually competing for the LT spot. RT, maybe. LT, no. Imo, there was no way that a project, 6th round tackle was possibly going to start.

If someone's there, sure. But by the time he's ready to play LT will probably be better. At least then he could step into LT if he had too.

But as people have pointed out, most of the sacks on oher are coverage sacks. Whenever i watch the replays, I always watch the game clock to see if 3 seconds have passed, after 3 seconds Joe HAS to get the ball out of his hand.

Aaron rodgers struggled with that and led the league in sacks, when he got a better core of receivers and got the ball out of his hand, he won the super bowl.

Chester was a big problem. Joe had no pocket to step into. When Joe hit Pitta on the big play, he stepped up in the pocket, to a spot chester would surely be occupying after being man handled. Grubbs actually broke down in that pass protection.

Hes never going to be Ogden and we all need to realize that and stop having unrealistic expectations. Hes going to allow some sacks. He wasn't a top 10 draft pick, he was a late first rounder. Here in Baltimore we have just gotten use to Ogden shutting down the top pass rushers in the league that we don't know how to deal with an average-above average tackle.

Lets just hope for improvement this year before we move him to RT. He's still getting used to the league im sure. It takes a while to be a good LT in this league, not everyone is Joe Thomas or Ogden.

He held Dwight freakin Freeney to no sacks, and he's all of a sudden "abysmal"? that makes loads of sense. He held Harrison to ZERO sacks in the regular season. And if you break it down, two of Harrison's sacks were coverage sacks. Same with against Hali, coverage sacks. He did good against Jared Allen, aside from one fluky play. Abraham did not destroy him, either, from what I remember. The sacks from Cole, were coverage sacks, and one because Cousins made Flacco step up. MOST of Ohers sacks are the result of the other side breaking down , and from the inability of WRs to get open, like I've stated again and again.

That's a funny joke man, tell it again! Harewood was, and still is a project. I have no clue where you heard he was supposed to be the LT starter, cuz I've never heard that.
It's not just about the sacks he gives up, it's the initial pressure that's applied also. Like a lot of people say, it's not all about the sacks, it's the QB hurries and pressure also and from the hike of the ball, I have seen Oher plenty of times fall victim to this which throws the QB off obviously which causes him to give up on a play or not let WR's develop and hit the checkdown, etc.

Michael Oher is overrated as a football player period. Not saying he sucks but i think a lot of people take his "fame" from the Blindside and try to use that as their reasoning for believing he is the next Jon Ogden or Orlando Pace. I believe he is an average LT at best and an above average RT. Nothing special or Hall of fame worthy in my opinion

We should draft the best available tackle in the first round next year, like Green Bay did with Bulaga. They knew the team was great, and that OL was the only real weak spot on the team that could not be resolved through gradual player development. They were a talent-filed team that some people thought could just go best player available, but they knew they had a need at tackle. The Ravens have had perennial problems at the tackle spot since Ogden retired. Get the best T in the draft and let him and Oher compete for the LT/RT spots. Hopefully, Oher will move to RT and we draft a more prototypical tackle to play LT.

I'm hoping we get Riley Reiff. He's projected right now (though it's still early) to be a late first round prospect.

Debatable. I guarantee you, at least 70% of pass plays are 3+ seconds (in terms of snap to the release of the ball)

A good LT should be able to hold his own for like 10+ seconds (Joe Thomas doesn't get beat at all. He could hold his man for like a minute for all I know)

Maybe all the attention he received from "The Blind Side" tended to do more harm than good. It might be that he does'nt have a real "mean" streak, attitude whatever you want to call it that hinders him. I just can't help but root for the young man to step up and succeed, but he would not be the first to really be over hyped, it's happened to many times to realistically rule that out. I guess at thend of the day it falls on him.

I disagree. He has a mean streak suited for a RT. Left tackles don't necessarily need a mean streak. They need good feet and long arms. Oher is a worker. His body type and attitude seem better suited for RT. I think most of the guys suited for the LT position on this team are very raw. Harewood looks like he could do it (body type), but I don't know how skilled he is or how much experience he has. This team doesn't have a real LT on the roster if you ask me, but I think we can still get by with the guys we have.

Mean streak? Exhibit A....

No problem. I know what you mean. I've also kind of lost sight of what kind of player he is since he's moved from RT to LT. We only saw him at RT as a rookie. Rookie years don't really show what type of player you are, so we don't really know what he was capable of if he had stayed ar RT for his second and now third year. LT is a harder spot to play, so we also don't know if it was the position that was particularly difficult for him last year, or whether it was the transitioning from the right side to the left side that made him struggle. We'll see soon enough, I guess. I still think that we need to draft a tackle in the first round next year though.

Even a mediocre pass rusher would get to the QB in less than 10 secs, that's a ridiculous number. I would say more 4-5 secs for a good pass rusher being as realistic as I can be.

Exactly. I don't know how well Reid or Harewood (now that Cousins has moved to guard) will fare if they start on the other side, but I have more faith in Reid that he will do better than Chester did last year.

I think its all mental with him. He no doubt has the skills to be a great Tackle, but he needs to not be affected if he does something wrong on the field or someone else taunting him and letting that lead to a penalty. That should come with age though.
Correction, he has the skills to be a great RT. He is not built to play on the left and he is not smart enough. He is dumb as a box of rocks and you need to put him where he can maul and doesnt have to think as much.

Wow, that's a little harsh. What makes you conclude this about his intelligence? I agree he's not naturally built like the prototypical left tackle, but he has the skills to excel there if he has the drive.

4 seconds is a lot against a good pass rusher. That's some Jake Long time you're hanging onto.

It is that DARN movie, I do not expect Oher to be Ogden but when I see him on the left side and the defense runs a game on him so smooth that he does not block any one at all, it concerns me. I like the guy at RT!
