Are Cary Williams And Jimmy Smith Starting Week 1

133 posts in this topic

I say if Cary looks good in the next 2 preseason games if they start him then foxy should be cut or traded. Cary, jimmy,Carr,Webb, and brown would be a very solid group of corners with our 4 solid safeties that could be one of the deepest secondaries in the league.

I'm pulling for Williams and Smith to be our starting CBs from Day 1 or atleast not too far after. Its a plus having CBs that can press with speed both being over 6'1 and they will fit Pagano's style better. Webb, I'm still not sold on him, I feel he's a good slot CB and a suitable #2 but nothing more at this point, potential to the side. Foxworth has a big, if not the biggest question mark heading into this season wondering can he get back to that end of 09 season form and can he just hold up. Carr, he's a good slot CB, nothing more.

if Foxy was working out as hard as he was holding back the signing of the CBA, he'd be #1.

Really? I'm gonna pretend I didn't even read this post.

Cary ran with the 1s again today, while Foxy ran with the 2s. So Cary must be showing enough for the coaches to still want a look at him with the 1s.

I personally think, and this might be a bias thought, but I strongly believe that every DB is better playing with Ed Reed. If you can't have success in the same secondary as Ed, you just flat out can't ball.

With that said, Ed will allow both Jimmy and Cary to take chances in with that ball hawking style.

There length is just so impressive and they both use it well, unlike a guy like Gary Baxter. Baxter was good, but he played too small for his size imo. I also think what really hurt a guy like Baxter was that he was too stiff. Baxter seemed like more of a Safety then a CB, but he made it work in tandem with CMac.

I think both Smith and William and fluid and use their combo of size and speed really well.

It's really hard not to get excited about the possibility of those 2, with Webb also.

Smith and Williams will dare WRs to run pass them, knowing that hopefully the pass rush well be breathing down the QBs neck. Because they have the speed to recover, and Ed Reed behind them, we'll play with tremendous confidence, and when playing man-man bump and run, that's half the battle.

If the Ravens can get back to being a heavy Man-Man bump and run defense, it'll really help Ed Reed even more. As if he needs it right.

But the reason I say that is, playing Man-Man allows Ed to roam, duck, and hide like he's known to do, to make plays.

When you are playing a zone, the QB knows where you are, or supposed to be in Ed's case. However in Man coverage, it allows Ed to play that Center field more.

It's also free Pollard to blitz more and not have to worry about coverage assignments.

If this pairing can work out, it just might allow the Ravens defense to get back to dominating offenses week in and week out.

I agree to the fullest and Pagano is a former secondary coach so you really know the man knows how to evaluate the talent of DBs and with Williams practicing with the 1st team mulitiple times, that speaks volumes right there.

It wouldn't hurt to have two big physical corners. I can't wait to see how Mike Wallace holds up against bump and run coverage.

You should be saying "I can't wait to see how Jimmy Smith holds up against Mike Wallace." Smith is the one who needs to prove himself, not Wallace vs. bump and run. He went 7 for 102 against the Jets last year (both Cromartie and Revis are physical at the line) and 3 for 116 against the Raiders last year (I don't know if it was on Nnamdi, but the guy can fight on the line and still run.

Cary and Jimmy still practicing with the first team defense, I like it

We'd have some amazing CB depth if these two really develop into potential starters

I'm sooo excited - to quote Ray Rice
