They're the most talented corners on our roster, but I highly doubt either are ready to take over a starting role early this season.

Bring in a proven vet!!!

I was just about to post that. Here's the other Tweet from 1 Winning Drive.

"Interesting to see @realjimmysmith and Cary Williams running with the 1st-team defense. That's a lot of length. Jimmy is practicing fully"

Both Webb and Carr were at practice, so it wasn't like Smith and Williams were injury replacements.

Now it could be a case where Chuck just wants to see who fits well, but reports all Camp are that Smith and Williams have been our best CBs in practice when they are on the field.

So getting them on the field together just seems smart to me.

I think Cary Williams is finally getting some recognition, the Ravens may have a lockdown corner on the roster and he's been buried there for years...this could be really good for the Ravens

I think a lot can be made about Chuck being the DC and coming from the secondary last year. Nobody saw Cary and watched him with more attention to detail then Chuck.

Chuck didn't have final say over him getting playing time or not last year, but this year he does.

Also, like I said, with Cary's long arms, speed and playmaking abilities, he fits what Chuck wants to do on the outside really well.

I'll wait to see Cary on more of a consistent basis because I make a call on whether he could be shut down or not. But from the limited time she's been able to showcase his talents, he's definitely solid and will be able to help this team.

You talk about a secondary getting big and physical in the course of 1 offseason. Williams, Jimmy, and Pollard provides that for the Ravens.

Everyone was kind of freaking out about our CB situation, I think its the best we've had in years. Probably since CMac was a Raven.

Foxworth - Webb - Carr - Jimmy - Cary Williams - Chykie Brown

Jimmy and Cary are both tall corners who will have size advantage on a lot of receivers. They are both also very speedy. Webb has shown promise since his rookie year and now being healthy for a full offseason I expect he'll be better as well. Foxworth is still healing up from his surgery so he may not be 100% back by the season starts but he'll still be playing.

It's going to be interesting but I definitely think Cary Williams has a place on this defense.

I definitely think he does as well. The interesting thing is, the guy that was considered a "Need" during the offseason, might not have a place. That's Chris Carr.

I really like Chris and I think he's improved from year to year. However if Foxworth returns 100% he's a better CB. Webb has more range and upside then Carr. Jimmy will be a stud, Williams will start to play more and more. His size and speed will mirror Jimmy's and passing window could get very tight for QBs. Then there is Ruki, who did a really strong job in coverage last season operating out of the Dime defense.

With the depth we now seemingly have and the potential of these guy, added to the aggressive nature and pass rush Pangano will bring, one of these guys might become expendable over the next few weeks.

As far fetched as it seems, Carr might just be that guy. Somebody elses Josh Wilson.

The Giants have lost their top rookie, the Prince for the season. They might see value in Carr. OR maybe a team that's stacked at OLine but lacks depth at CB would be willing to work a trade with Ozzie.

1winningdrive said jimmy and Cary Williams as day one starters is a possibly. He and Jimmy were also running with the first team together today. That's a good sign It's possible. Cary also broke up a 4th down pass to Lee Evans. This kid just keep making plays.

I like everything you said, I really think our defense is going to return to being quite nasty this year. The sacks are going to be up this year and I think our secondary is stronger than last year x2

If the O-line can get itself worked out and with the addition of Lee Evans and the development of guys like Dickson, Pitta, David Reed along with the rookies, I think our offense could be really good as well. This team has a lot of potential and I'm seeing it come together more and more everyday.

Sounds strange since I dont watch the practices and our first preseason game was sloppy but what do you expect when there is no offseason for these guys.

The Ravens are looking solid

If this continues and Foxworth don't c the field we may look to trade Foxworth before the season starts. Who knows.. there's no point of having him be our highest paid corner and he don't c playin time. There still is teams like the lions that need cornerback help. If fabian and frank walker got sign Foxworth would have some interest. It still to early for me to be saying this, but u never kno.

each time i see Williams play i notice him, meaning i don't have to ask is Williams in the game. The guy to me has the "it" factor in my opinion,I'm glad to hear he is getting to run with the 1's.

Its one thing to look good in practice and in preseason games against backups and PT guys, it's entirely different in a high pressure situations against WRs better than Boldin/Evans during regular season games and playoffs. So until then just slow down the hype machine, I mean it was only last week when everyone was convinced Jah Reid would be a pro bowl rookie.

I wouldn't call it a hype machine at all! Hype to me is unearned, the praise Carey Williams is getting, he definitely has earned! This is a guy who was drafted in the 7th round 4 years ago, we got from the Titans practice squad, and he has made a good name for hisself through hard work, and hustle! Even though he didn't get into the rotation last year after a stellar camp/pre season, he stuck around and kept grinding... Now he may finally be getting a shot!

I for one Posted this thread yesterday because Ive noticed this kid making plays... Its funny because today they tweeted he's running with Jimmy Smith against the 1st team! Maybe they do read these blogs afterall! Good job Jimmy, Good call Chuck!!

Dont hate, congradulate!!!

I jumped on the home page and seen the topic with Jimmy and Cary playing on the 1st team and I got real excited. It's very possible that Cary could be starting from Day 1 along with Jimmy.

I don't think anyone is ready to label him a stud or anything. But when you see a guy who seeming goes from the bottome and works his way up, it's impressive and it grabs the attention of many.

In years past, guys like Bart Scott, Kelly Gregg, Will Demps, and other have worked their way up through the Ravens system by busting their butts in practice and showcasing flashes in preseason.

Cary seems to be doing the same thing, and he's getting rewarded for it.

But as you said, the next step for him, to to take that next step. He now has to prove to his teammates and coaches more then us, that he can become a solid part of this defense.

The only way he'll be able to show and prove is to make plays in practice against the 1s and in limited preseason action.

You say he needs to show it against better WRs then Q and Lee. Well he probably won't find another WR as strong as Q and not many as fast as Lee, so gets a good test for him on a daily basis.

Also, and this isn't a knock on you, just a general question.

Why is it when there is a player that certain fans are fond of, when they do well, they say hold up on the hype train. However when a seemingly fan favorite like Pitta or Art Jones does well, we say what their potential for the season could be.

Cary Williams can't do anything more then he's doing right now. And that's making plays every chance he gets, regardless of who he's going against.

Name a CB needy team, I can't think of one other than Pitsburgh, and there is no way in hell we will trade them to him. I know, why do we not trade him, but if we do, trade him for a right tackel

I am not saying that Foxworth would bring a ton of would be suitors, but CB is one of the most sought after positions in football. There are plently of teams looking to acquire a CB.

We are keeping all our corners, you can never have too many good corners, this is a pass happy league and they will all be needed at some point or another.

The topic title says it all. I know there has been only one preseason game played, but Im basing this off of what I have personally seen over the past few seasons.

I don't know exactly when Raven cb's started giving 10+ yards of cushion to basically every wr, but it looks bad. Whats worse is when they still give up the catch and/or big play.

I love Carey Williams spirit! He is in your face at the line, he is big and physical, and a ball hawk as is Jimmy Smith. I say why not? It's long overdue if you ask me.

Foxworth; In MY opinion he is a #3 corner
Carr; #4 (#3 on a good day)
Webb; potential but needs to develope more physicality and ball hawking skills on the field
[/quote]

It seems like your wishes may actually be coming true based on the practice this afternoon. If Cary and Jimmy play long and are able to play good press coverage, I think you will have your wish. I have to admit I think that will be the best tandem under the circumstances.

Especially with Foxworth just getting off an ACL, it may be the best option for us... I have no faith in Webb at this time. Chykee Brown and Webb are still useful but not starting material... Webb and Chykee can definitely help out on Special Teams and also provide depth to our CB situation...

No faith in Webb? Idk about that he played well his rookie year and coming off injury last year he played well at times, especially in the first game against the Steelers where he covered Mike Wallace and took that long catch away from him

Webb is skilled and has upside, Chykie Brown i dont know much about at this point

Williams, Smith, and Foxworth could be a deadly tandem of corners, Webb could also be in the mix, but, we are fine, Smith and Williams are both potential shut down guys, and Foxworth is solid. We in my opinion are going to have a better defense than offense, and that is saying a lot since our offense is pretty damn good.
