Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice said the team will have to install a few new things during training camp, but he doesn't believe they will be set back much by the lockout because they are not putting a totally new offense or defensive scheme into place.

Thanks for the info Fly. This is why I want to focus on Anquan Boldin tonight and see what kind of routes he was running. I know I'm not alone when I saw that he was not used properly last season by running deep routes instead of those short quick routes that Q is money on. You can send someone like Torrey Smith constantly down field because he has great speed, but Boldin makes most of his impact within the 5-10 yard line and fighting to get those extra yards. How the WRs are utilized will be very interesting to see.

We can continue to blame Cam, but reports are that Boldin had a large part of helping run the offense last year.

Reports say that, there were times that Q saw how teams were playing him and called plays to towards another WR. I think the biggest play he called last year was the Stallworth catch against the Steelers.

So a lot of those deep routes by Q was to open things up for Mason, Housh and Heap. It hurt Q that none of those guys could up things up for him.

As you said, Torrey should be able to do that this year.

This would be a huge story, if the scheme was the problem with the offense last year. It wasn't the scheme, it was the players and coaches within the scheme that failed. From execution to play calling, to mental breakdowns.

That is what the Ravens need to focus on this year, not changing the offense.

This is the first I've heard of Anquan Boldin being involved in calling plays. Can I get a link so I can read more on it?

Well, hopefully we wouldn't have to change the scheme, now that we *hopefully* have the proper personnel to run the offense. With pieces lke Hardy, Doss, and Smith, the Air Coryell will have much more success than it did with Housh, and Mason. Is it certain that the rookies will be immediate upgrades in terms of production? Of course not, I do not believe they will automatically match the production of Mason and Housh, but I feel they are a MUCH better fit for the system. They still might be able to produce great rookie seasons.

Also, Cam's love of a inside, power running game will be greatly improved! Yanda is moved back inside, and Leach has been added. All of those "pointless" dives with Ray Rice may actually see some success this year with new attention to the running game. And as we all know, a running game helps play action, something which limited our offense last year. A strong running game, play action, and receivers that fit will *hopefully* make the scheme work.

The point isn't the scheme, it is as you said, the guys within the scheme. If Cam has more or less the same scheme, what is going to force him to change?

What kiind of concerns me is that the defense may not be changing too much either. I was happy with Mattison for the most part, but we should have the weapons to get a lot more creative this year, and I was looking forward to see what Pagano could come up with.

I really think the defense is kept a lot "Under the HAt" so to speak last night. We still got great penetration, just poor tackling from over-ecitement drailed some huge stops.

As for Q calling plays and the article that was posted... It doesn't sound like he actually called the play in that exact instance. More like, he relayed info to Cam/Joe about the Steelers tendencies and what they're doing and made a suggestion... I'm sure the circumstance inwhich it was called wasnt something that happend in the midst of the snap...

I heard that the defense is going to be quite different this year than last year, he was pretty aggressive in preseason.
I agree with what someone else said. It wasn't the scheme, it was the play calling and players.

When it comes to the coaches, I'll reserve my judgement for the regular season.

We didn't see anything last night. Preseason plays aren't designed to score, they're designed to put players in situations the coaches want to see. Why do you think Joe didn't throw to Boldin? Because Boldin has nothing to prove. Why do you think Cousins played the whole game and at RT and LT?
