Ray's Last Run?

39 posts in this topic

i just watched the NFL Network and they had a brief segment on a statement that Ray Lewis made. here it is:

"My son wil be a junior this year. I only play this game for another ring....if we win it this year, I'm gone to then spend as much time as I can with him. I'm gone to be with my son. And, I feel like we now have enough pieces in place to make a good run at the superbowl."

so what do you all think? is this it for our main man...Ray Lewis?

Part of me says I hope so, since it means we win it all this year, while of course the other half realizes that Ray would be gone then. So bitter sweet!

We win it all, hes done!

We get close, hes back for one more ride!

Sounds like the plan is for Ray to retire if we win a Super Bowl. Not surprising, I thought that was a forgone conclusion. We shouldn't keep Ray Ray waiting.

If we win. Yes. If we don't. He will be here one more year I believe, as long as he doesn't have any type of injuries to hold him back.

Maybe, but maybe not. Playing at the level that he is, and will be probably all the way til his retirement, I think that he's going to miss football too much. That's all the man has ever known. However, if he gets his ring, it might alter his perspective a bit.

Ray has said several times that, when he's done with football, he's done. No coaching, no sideline mentoring, no hanging on. He wants to spend more time with his family. Just one of many links where he's indicated this: LINK

So, I believe Ray when he says that he'll retire if he wins another championship. And if not, he'll keep pursuing that next ring until his body and mind tell him to stop. He's even hungrier for that second ring because he wants to be with his family so desperately, especially with his son becoming his own man and Ray not being around to see it.

Ray said he wants to stop playing at age 37, so he turns 36 this year....so he will probably play next year but after that everything is up in the air...If his body feels good and he is still playing at a high level he could stay even longer.

We'll just have to see, Also, a thread asking the same question was created a few days ago RE: My Husband Has IT

If he goes out he will go out on top. That is how it should be. Its your year Mr. Lewis. Go get it.

Ravens win the Super Bowl I will hate to see him go but you wont hear a complaint or negative word from me. He had WELL earned his retirement. I would rather see him go out on top.

While I hate to say this, I think this will be Ray's last season. He will be 37 yrs old and also consider his position and the reckless abandon with which he plays every play. I hope he retires on his own terms with another SB ring!

I just cannot stand Ray ever being cut from the team like Heap, Gregg and Mason were. That would devastate me and the entire fan base. I don't think the Ravens will be dumb enough to do that, but, if Ray wants to come back for another year(and his performance has been stellar like last year), he will return for one final shot at the lombardi in 2012. But, frankly I think he retires after this year...

I never pay attention to older star players retirement runimations. They are often flakey. I have no input so I take a "If they retire they do if they don't they don't" attitude. In any case Ray is at the end of his career. If its this year or next - meh.

And? Do you expect he will play another five years? I grew up watching Lawrence Taylor. He was great - until he was not. Ray is 36. Like Favre - once the injuries set in the goose is cooked, and it doesnt matter who you are.

You mistook what I said for some idotic statement eluding to Ray playing "forever" when I was simply referring to the "meh" part as if you wouldn't care one way or another when Ray retires. He has been the face.....ah, forget it. You know who the guys is. Just found it odd/strange that someone would "meh" the idea of Ray retiring. Going to be a sad day when he hangs 'em up!

This is his last stand people, drink it in.

One day I hope to tell my grandkids of a time of stife and war, when a warrior in purple defied the Gods of Olympus and rode a majestic mechanical lazer shooting Raven into battle.

This is the Ballad of Sir Ray Lewis of Baltimore, the son of Zeus.

Well Ray's retirement is like wondering when the sun will go down at 8PM on sunmmer's eve. You don't know if it will be 8:30 or 8:45 but you know its close at hand - hence the "meh". It's not a sign of disrespect as much as a sign of improbability. The vast bulk of Ray's career is in the rear view mirror.

We need to win the SB this year, so Ray can close his completed legacy of the best ILB of all time. Ed Reed can show his fellow hall of fame his SB ring, and we all can celebrate for the 11 year of waiting.

we all know that! but, again...this is Ray Lewis bruh! none of us are in a hurry to see this cat retire! why not? because of all that he has meant to us fans, the city of Baltimore and the Ravens!

there are alot of things in life that are inevitable but that doesn't mean that we are looking forward to them. Ray Lewis retiring is one of those things we are not in a hurry to see.

I wish we could both win the super bowl and keep Ray for another year, i really wanted to see him mentor his successor. Hopefully if we win we could possibly convince him, though it'd be tough.

That....may just be the... greatest thing Ive ever heard you say.

Likewise, I will tell stories of when I was able to watch the greatest LB machine destroy teams single handedly.

Wow. For some reason I kept feeling that Ed Reed would retire before Ray Lewis. I'd rather we win a Superbowl and the Corleone story not unfold.

If Ray retires then he'll have done it on top as a world champion. It will clear up some cap space going into the next season and McClain & Ellerbeast will have to step up. It will be a bitter sweet superbowl victory.

But, then it will fully be Flacco's team. The defense will be run by Ed Reed still. But on the whole, Flacco will become team leader.

This will be his last season if we win the Superbowl. I'm as sure about that as I possibly can be for a person with no personal insight on his view on the matter. He's already said that he won't play past 37 which means he has two years maximum left and whilst he answers the retirement questions with "when I wake up and my love for the game is lost" (something like that) I struggle to believe he'd want one more season when he could bow out on the highest of highs.

I think with Ed it depends on how his body holds up. I think he mentioned recently that he only envisages himself playing for a handful of years longer, so I again think that he'd also want to leave the game at the top if we win the Superbowl.

That would be one bad summer if we lost Ray and Ed to retirement in one offseason.

For purely selfish reasons I hope he doesn't retire this season. I'll never forgive myself if I never got to see Ray and Ed play in person before they retired. I've already started saving for next season thinking that would be his and possibly Ed's last season!

Tough one, was hoping Ray would spend next year helping develop our newly drafted LB to take his place but also have a good feeling this year. All this gloom doom talk, analist having us as an underdog, and the re-birth of our Rushing attack that will open up the play action along with a more aggressive defense...it may be a rough start for many teams with the shortened off season but I like the Ravens chances this year

I agree with this. I know Steeler fans who could almost stomach the Ravens winning the Super Bowl this year if it meant Ray Lewis would retire.

Just shows how great a player Ray Lewis is and how much of an effect he has on the game. I would never say that about Polamalu, yet again, maybe i would since they seem to win Super Bowls on a regular basis anyway.
