[Blogs] Is Torrey Ready To Be No. 2?

277 posts in this topic

I don't think there's ever been a week 1 game that was such a "must win" as ours this year. We certainly could come back and win it all regardless of the first game, but after all that's happened the last 3 years especially last year it just feels like we have to take that first game.

I really wanted Floyd or Mase.. just sayin. To ask a rookie to step in and be a #2 on team in contention for a SB is pretty rough. Anyone know any other proven WR's available? Has steve smith gotten picked up yet?

There are six teams in the AFC that have legitimate hopes of winning the SB this year. Ravens, Patriots, Chargers, Jets, Colts, and steelers. Whenever you see people on ESPN, NFL Network, etc. talk about our chances they only mention 1 team standing in our way. And it's really almost accurate. We've owned those other teams except for the Colts. We need to start off the season by slaying the 300 pound gorilla on our back an go from there.

The only vet out there other than T.O. is J. Cotchery. I say we bring him in. We play the Jets in week 4 and may see them in the playoffs! If his back checks out that may be the way to go.

I'm getting vibes that Tandon Doss would be great on third downs, because he don't drop the rock. But I had the feeling that our rookie WR would be number two since before the draft, Mason has been expendable and there are no real roster spots to give up now, unless you eliminate James Hardy or David Reed. 5 wide receivers is about the max we can fit in a 53 man roster, so unless the final roster is bigger or we go thin at another position, no new wide receivers.

And if yall think I'm crazy for trusting the rookies this much all I can say is it hasn't rained or been under 100 degrees here in North Texas in over a month.

I'd rather run with what we have than bring in Cotchery. I think it's time to focus on the other needs: OL, backup RB, backup QB. IMO the only 2 WR out there right now that fit what we need, tall field stretcher ok with just a 1 year deal, is TO and Moss. Both of them come with an ample amount of baggage as well.
At this point I'd rather use the money we were planning on spending on a WR to shore up those other positions, and maybe still pull off a move for Asante Samuel or Osi Umenyiora.

All I can base my opinion off of is what I saw them do at yesterday's practice. Maybe he just had a bad practice or maybe Cary Williams has been getting better, but I really wasn't impressed with Doss. I have more faith in Torrey than in Doss. Torrey did great with the short and long passes. I think we'll have to wait and see how they do in preseason, but I think people are gonna be changing their minds about Torrey Smith soon.

What we probably need asap is a center, the WR situation IMO can wait until after our Thursday game with Philly, to really give the coaches a idea if the WR are further ahead or not....The WR's have gotten great reviews so far with LaQuan Williams making a good case to make the team.....Eagles have a stud Secondary, so who better to have our young WR's go up against.......

@Gost1986 I think Doss will be great, i was very impresed with him yesterday. He runs good routes. It would be nice to get another Playmaker but I trust the coaches more then ppl on this site... just sayin...

I agree, man. Especially after yesterday. I don't know if it's because our d-line and pass rush has improved or what, but both Flacco and Taylor were taking too many simulated sacks. I'd be disappointed if we didn't resign Housh, though. A lot of people either seem to have forgot about him or they're hating on him. I think too many people are hating on Torrey Smith without even really knowing what he's capable of in a game yet. I'm waiting to see how many people ask why we didn't resign Mason after one dropped pass or an incompletion thrown in his direction that was uncatchable. Some people here baffle me.

I'm all about giving the rookies a chance but going into the season without another vet WR is not the way to go. They need to get someone in now to get reps with Flacco!

Yeah like I said all I can base my opinion on is what I saw yesterday. I didn't even get to stay for the 11-on-11. And from what I hear Cary Williams is improving so it could have just been great coverage on his part.

@ghost1986......I am with you about TJ, he was our best mismatch last year going up against #3 CB's, and Cam never took advantage of it....He is also another big target, he makes the most sense, seeing he know our offense....But i really think we need to find a Center, being the Center is the QB of the O-Line...I do think the the kid from Cuse will be our future Center, but we really need a vet now.....

They probably won't bring TJ back just because he complained so much last year. They don't want anyone who has the potential to be a locker room problem. But I really like him and I wish we could get him.
