[Blogs] Is Torrey Ready To Be No. 2?

277 posts in this topic

Something's amiss concerning FA players and Baltimore. Is it Harbaugh? Ozzie? What? There is an underlying reason we have failed to bring in any FA players, overpaid to keep a couple others, and lost thought to be loyal players to other teams, oh and offered better deals only to still lose out. The FO sold out last season and did not properly prepare for a season with a salary cap. 27 FA players on one roster was a huge mismanagement blunder as there was no way to negotiate properly with that many players. We've been left with paying a G, Tackle money, Bringing in a SS to compete with 2 other SS's already on the roster, overpaying for a FB, and expecting to play in the AFCN with a below average Offense and slowing defense. Somebody's head will roll after this season.

@balfan you're asking questions that every team in the NFL now has to answer with us being back into a salary capped season. We had the luxury for the past two seasons of having depth and players to fill the void if needed. So my only question to you is how about we see what happens with a whole bunch of new younger players?
[/quote]
Just saying these are the issues that are out there. Didn't say we'd address them all through personnel changes (as a matter of fact, I said that some of these would be answered on the field). No one expects a team to be 100% flawless. My post was not an indictment of the organization, just stating the things that are out there for us to think about.

I do think a couple of them can and should be answered through personnel - especially getting depth on the O line. And with the current fixation on #2 WR, I do have to wonder if we don't need to provide a little veteran help for Rice at RB to take some of the work load off and a vet insurance policy for Flacco.

Torrey and Tandon might be ready for bigger roles half way through the season but for the first half we need a vet playing on the opposite side of Boldin to start the season.

@honestfan = well said . there is no way this FO managed this situation properly. Our O is well behind last year and after watching practice yesterday, I can tell you Lebeau is licking his chops. We will see 8 in the box and the pressure on Flacco will not allow anything beyond a 10 yard route, which their CB's will jump. We did not need to sign Pollard or Carr, that's money that was needed at OL and WR. I can't understand what OZ is/was thinking. It's like he's operating in a panic with no plan. The rook WR's couldn't have been the plan, could they?

What they should do is give David Reed a shot and get off the rookies N#st he showed some skills last year when they gave him a shot

@TOM IS COOL
I hope the FO is at least making inquiries about Smith, because he is a very good receiver. I am just a little concerned whether he will be what he was before the injury. Some guys seem to pick up where they left off when healed, while others never quite get back to that same level. I think this guy, if completely healed, could be something good for years to come if we can get him at a decent price.

To the 25 thousand that went to M&T saturday?Marcus Smith had trouble holding on to the ball, while Torrey Smith caught the ball like he had been in the NFL before!Joe Flacco favorite(tandon Doss)looks like a winner also. You guys are in for a treat this year and you don,t even know it!

I know he is good but im still skeptical about a second round draft pick as a starting reciever for us. This isnt the cleveland browns.

But I will say this, If have to go in the season with Doss and T.Smith as our 2nd and 3rd WRs, they have a very good chance of getting Offensive ROY assuming Flacco plays like he did last year

I myself cant wait to see the new guys and the "old" guys do on the field. I am not an expert, but wouldnt it make sense to bring TJ, back? I mean he knows the team and knows the plays.Just until the rookies are broken in a little. Everyone keeps talking about him dropping a pass last year, well.....so did Mason in the endzone at the playoff game which we lost. Then when interviewed he laughed about it. I for one did not think it was very funny! P.S didnt Randy Moss retire?

Look at desean jackson and boldin was a 2nd rounder and had over 1300 yards as a rookie.

we will know if he is going to play number 2 if we dont draft anyone after the preseason games. Gotta stay optimistic. That all we can do.

I am ok giving the rooks a chance, not my preference but whatever. I am MAJORLY concerned about our OL. We looked HORRIBLE yesterday. Flacco was "sacked" on 50% of the pass plays. The D cannot tackle Flacco, only "two hand touch" him. 50% or more of the pass plays he was two handed touched and then passed afterwards. People, focus on the OL!!!

Yes, protect the quarterback!!!!!! We need a center since Birk is going to be out for awhile, and the guy we hired for his spot did not pass either the physical or the conditioning Im not sure which.

boldin and harty are experienced. doss is a possession guy who can replace mason. dickson is a good target. torrey will be a threat with his speed. he will be fine. he is smart, fast and good hands. the running game and strong defense will be like 2008. lets go.

wow! how far have we sunk getting excited about Laquan Williams who hasn't played WR in three years at a weak program like Maryland...

I don't know the offense in general is scaring me a little I think it may take time for them to learn and be major contributors but we don't have time, it's a shame about how the free agent wide receive market turned out, and I dont know if Cotchery is the right option as hes also a possession receiver, but he's younger than Mason is, and he hasn't argued with Flacco yet so I think he's worth looking into.... that is if he would be a better #2 than someone who is already wearing purple

we gotta to have confidence in our FO's draft selections. i believe that Torrey Smith and Tandon Doss will be a HUGE asset to the Ravens offense along with Boldin, Hardy, Dickson and Pitta.

BELIEVE!!

Drafting WR's is the one position that we haven't been able to get right in years!! As I do every year, I hope Torrey and Tandon do well. But I refuse to get hyped up until I see actual production.
