[Blogs] Mason Joins Jets

408 posts in this topic

Two weeks after he was cut by the Ravens, wideout Derrick Mason signed with the New York Jets.

According to reports, Mason received a one-year deal to join back up with former Ravens Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan and several other former Ravens players.

Mason was deciding between the Ravens, the Jets, or the Tennessee Titans.

“After a lot of very thoughtful and careful consideration, conversations with my family and prayer, I have decided to sign with the New York Jets,” Mason announced. “I’m looking forward to working under Rex and rejoining some familiar faces.”

Several of his Baltimore teammates threw support behind the 37 year old after Saturday’s training camp practice at M&T Bank Stadium.

“Derrick’s a great wide receiver,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “He can help this team out in my opinion. Yeah, I’d welcome him back immediately.

Mason took to Twitter to voice his excitement in working with third-year quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Jet fuel is full time to fly!!!!!,” Mason tweeted.

Going from one young gun to another!! Hahahahahaha

Mason is the Ravens’ all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. Last season, Mason tallied 61 catches for 802 yards and seven touchdowns.

If the Ravens would like to add another receiver to their young group – aside from Anquan Boldin – the best available unrestricted free agents include New York Giants wideout Steve Smith, the Jets’ Jerricho Cotchery and former Ravens T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Mark Clayton.

Yesterday's headline "Floyd spurns Ravens", today's "Mason chooses Gang Green over Ravens". Sorry, but not a good weekend for the purple.

Some are trying to be positive and put a good spin on this by saying our rookies will do what very, very few rookie WRs have ever done and that is provide a significant impact in their first year.

But there is no denying, the FO did not wish for things to go in this direction and have to be feeling pretty badly snubbed. As for myself, the frustration of closely following our struggles on this front is wearing me out.

I'm checking out now, I'll come back in a couple weeks to see if they have managed to address this or any of their other needs (O line, backup QB, #2 RB, etc, etc) with the money they cleared by cutting these vets, or if they have yet managed a long term deal with Ngata to free up cap space to try and further improve this team.

Why would he choose the Jets over Ravens when we are a better team. He would be a starter here and would be making more money. He would catch more passes and we have a better quarterback. I don't understand Mason's logic in making this decision.

we are dangerously close to big trouble if we dont sign a strong WR. Teams, especially Rex, are going to have 8 or 9 in the box. There will be no fear of our passing game at all. Boldin is very solid but not a burner. And with our O line, I'd send everybody also. What is OZ thinking?????

..Yes he would have been great to have back for stability to a very young WR corp, and he had a lot of knowledge to offer them, but other than that, we move on...He did a great job for us or years, but time to have someone else step in, and step up, whether that be a rook, or another vet, but it's over and done with.....We will be fine, we have a more pressing issue, and that is getting our O-line straight....

Well Mason, we have a better QB, offense, more money, starting position, and adoring fans. But you choose the Jets. I hope you regret this decision when the Ravens go farther and do better than the Jets this year.

I loved Mas here but the NFL is a league of change, but hopefully in wk 4 when the Jets come to town Ray can welcome Mas back when he comes over the middle and Sanchez hangs him out to dry with a horrible pass. After a Ray knockout blow he might of thought twice about his decision to play with a lesser team and lesser qb!

The reason he chose the Jets is simple: Rex Ryan. Is it that hard to understand how well respected as a coach he is and how much his players love him? I will never forgive the Ravens for choosing Harbaugh over him. Harbaugh's inexperience, choosing players based off personality and old school methods of coaching make me sick and has surely hindered this teams ability.

I don't blame him for leaving, he was definitely snubbed by the front office. How does it look if he does return, desperate. Hopefully him going to the Jets will be a detraction from their progress.

I don't see T.J. being the answer, but don't be suprised if the front office goes after him, Cotchery was released for a reason, we traded Clayton for a reason (inconsistency). Steve Smith and Terrell Owens are coming off injuries, not that I would want a healthy Owens for his distractions.

It really makes me wonder what the heck is taking so long to get Ngata's deal done, it seems everyone else who was franchsed has already signed. As smart as our front office is, I don't buy the "it takes time to get a big contract done". Had we of singed Haloti, we probably could have made a better offer to Mase.

Floyd took less money to stay a Charger. At this point here we might as well go "all in" with Torrey, Reed, and Doss as our 2,3,4 receivers. Same goes for the only 3 tight ends we have on the roster. Sometimes you may have to take a step back to get better.

Im gunna throw up if we dont sign somebody soon. This is ridiculous. All we signed is Leach. Yanda and Carr were just resignings. We cannot rely on a rookie be our #2 WR. Mark Clayton ring a bell?

People are talking about how we didn't resign Ngata, but in actuality, the 12 mil he is getting from the franchise would probably equate to his yearly salary from a new contract...I guess the bonus would help some on the cap though...

We better get a Wr or CB before the season starts or I will be extremely disappointed with this offseason
[/quote]
WR =yes
CB?? Why are going after a corner when we already have 6 on our roster who will make the team. Carr and Webb will be the starters until Smith is up to speed and Foxworth is able to contribute. Plus there aren't any decent corners out there.

The Ravens definitely do not need a corner. Signing Carr was a mistake. Floyd would have made a much bigger/important impact on this team than Carr will make. There are plenty of corners on this team...Cary Williams has been on this team for years and its time he sees some action on game day. Probably won't happen though...Harbaugh doesn't like him

I thought this front office was good? LMAO. Steelers were 10 mill over cap to start, didnt hardly loose a man, resigned starters and still got under cap. Ravens under cap to start, cut starters, sign a fullback and cant even get Ngata signed. LOL.. He might leave too. Seems like nobody wants to be a Raven.
Whose do you guys think Joe is gonna throw too? Ravens are setting him up for great success, LMAO, All of those weapons he has now HAHAHA...Those rookie wide recievers gonna get hurt on opening day...

I hope the ravens are happy they let go our second best offensive weapon, it is unbelievable that the "wizard of OZ" let this happen, I love the ravens and I am a diehard fan but this is the single biggest mistake the ravens have made since cutting dilfer after our SB. I hope it comes back to haunt us when we play them this year, it serves them right

T.J. has always been a hard worker... Ozzie can you make something happen. Get a center, a DE, or a cornerback or something like a backup QB... It's still early and ppl haven't got cut. There is always T.O. In my head I'm say _____ no.

There is no way we should be taking steps back on offense. The WR position may be the biggest screw up of OZ's career. If you combine that with recent draft choices, I'm not so willing to keep calling OZ a genious. I did focus on the WR position today, and outside of Boldin, we are weak.
