ESPN QBR Ratings....

82 posts in this topic

Here is the list from 2008-2010 for all QBs rated according to the newly devised QBR - total Quarterback rating logic. You will have to read all about the way it is computed on ESPN, and I don't like the rating Joe Flacco got... feel free to express yourselves. Also, I have sorted out the ESPN rankings by year so you could get a clear sense of where Joe ended up each of his first 3 years...

QBR Leaders: 2008-10
Over the three years that were charted to create the QBR, one name rises to the top, with Peyton Manning recording the best seasons.

I have looked over that new format for the Total QBR but I don't completely understand it all yet. It seems a bit suspect though if you ask me and kind of feels like it's just something that ESPN can use to back their top choices for QB's but I will have to look into it more before I give it any kind of thought.

It is the dumbest thing ESPN has ever attempted, its opinion based...there are analysts watching tape and assigning points to each play a QB makes, a lot of it is ones personal opinion. So its flawed from the start, the QB rating is fine now they trot out the Total QBR

I kind of felt the same way too... it seems to me that you can spin metrics any which way to conclude what you want to achieve out of the results... at least that is the way I personally feel because this makes Flacco look pretty average at best. Ravens fans know that to be untrue...

Yea it seems that the big flaw with this is exactly what you said and it's someones opinion on the nature of the game and play and no real mathematical formula that dictates how clutch a play is or anything like that. The current passer rating system is flawed as well but nothing like I feel this is the more I learn about it but that's ESPN for you lol.

"I thought the stat seemed legit, but it is obvious that ESPN messed up the weighting of certain aspects of the game. Unless you are a Falcons fan or Joe Thiessman, it is impossible to think Matt Ryan is the 3rd best QB in the league. Also, Sam Bradford at 29 is ridiculous, especially if they weigh WR and OL play. Eli Manning as the 7th QB is ridiculous, as is Josh Freeman above Philip Rivers, Ben Rothlisberger, and Flacco. I will give it to ESPN, they gave a good shot at it, but as a 1st type of formula it wasnt terrible."

I think the QBR is against Flacco because of his mentality of taking the sack, rather than throwing an interception. Flacco needs to learn to just throw the ball away instead of being Ben. However, this offseason he bulked up 10 pounds to his skinny frame. I think he's preparing himself to be more like Roethlisberger, which might help our offense to extend plays if our two WRs are the slow, yet crisp route runners Boldin and Mason.

Hey the new QB Rating (QBR) by ESPN is out.
The scale they use to measure Elite QBs goes like this.

http://espn.go.com/n...rterback-rating

Scale (out of 100)
100-75: MVP-like Season
75-65: Pro Bowl-like Season
65-35: Average QB Season
35-0: Terrible QB Season

According to the rating, Joe Flacco is considered to be average, but his rating has been consistently increasing every year. If the projections seems right, Flacco should increase anywhere from 5-8 points, which could mean he's having a Pro-Bowl season.
2010: 58.1
2009: 52.6
2008: 41.6

Matt Ryan looks like he's already elite coming out of the draft, thus some flaws. However, Matt Ryan limited his turnovers against the team and made safe throws to make his team succeed his rookie year.
2010: 68.6
2009: 57.7
2008: 72.6 (making 3440 yards and 16 touchdowns considered pro-bowl like)

I think Flacco's rating was hurt because of the sacks he takes for holding onto the ball too long. Also, against ferocious defenses like the Steelers and Cover-2 schemes, Flacco seems to be limited as he makes questionable throws and decisions. However, you could also blame Cam Cameron for not putting Flacco in a position to overcome these defenses. For Example, using our slow receiving corps for deep routes or those out routes that everyone seems to memorize.

It's interesting, but I love adding fuel to Flacco's fire because everyone debates whether he should be considered an elite QB or not, but I think he has his sight on a ring, which is more important than having a MVP-like year. This year is going to be a prove-it year for Flacco as he is taking more accountability and leadership.

Flacco also takes a hit because a lot of his passes are completions to Ray Rice. Even though its an added dimension to our offense, that type of completion is not going to look great in this rating system.

Apparently in 2009 VY was a top 6 QB? Oh and lets not forget that Matt Ryan was the SECOND BEST QB his ROOKIE YEAR. Absolutely ridiculous.

I think this list is actually just Joe Thiessman ranking Quarterbacks and giving them grades.

How is Flacco lower than Romo for 2010. Romo missed like 10 games and Joe had 3600 yards and his ints are consistently dropping year to year. They should factor playoff wins in there somewhere. Cause Romo has 1 and Matt Ryan has 0. Flacco has 4 if im correct.

And its probably Joe Theismann and Jamie Dukes ratings. Theyre both the biggest idiots on TV. They dont know anything about football. Dukes changes his opinions hour to hour and Joe Theismann thinks everybody is a franchise quarterback unless you Joe Flacco.

This is one of the flaws IMO. I understand that YAC isn't counted in this rating system but if your receiving options down the field are covered and you make the smart decision to dump it to your RB and he makes the big play instead of the QB forcing it into coverage and possibly being intercepted the QB kind of gets penalized? That's not right because sometimes the QB sees a flaw in the defense where a dump off or screen to the RB is the better play and should get more credit for that. I'm not trying to take up for Flacco but a QB has to utilize all of his weapons and when you have a guy like Rice on the team you utilize him any way you can and this rating should reflect that better.

This is only one of the flaws to this system IMO.

If ESPN wants to be have a formula thats more realistic, they really need to fix it before the season starts. IF ESPN is going to take in consideration, how close the game is, then they should also take in consideration of the offenses running game. For throws against 8 in the box (3 coverage) are ALOT easier then throws againsts 4 in the box (7 coverage). A QB with a crappy running game who throws 250 yards should have more weight then a QB with a stud running game.

You have a point I think those people try to one up each other on who can make the most idiotic statement or who can bash Joe worse.

Jamie dukes makes me laugh he was a terrible offensive lineman, and seriously not because I cant stand the guy but he was truly horrible. He only started in half his games on some of the worst O lines in the league, and still couldnt start. Whatever it is that makes him think that he is qualified to comment on Qb's is beyond me this guy should be selling vacuum's door to door or something because his "expert" opinion is and probably always will be trash.

The rating is stupid, because they say right in the article that explains how it's calculated, "we didn't adjust for difficulty of opponent." Hence, you have Josh Freeman that high.

Yeah....and now ESPN is already using this scale on Sportscenter and whatnot. Had Ryan listed as a top 3 QB of last year. This entire process or "scale" is a complete joke!!

Well I was gonna make a thread about this myself, so I guess this'll just be one long post:

Total QBR doesn’t reflect the way football is scored: A touchdown is 6 points no matter when you score. But according to QBR, which weighs plays based on how late in the game (“clutch”) it is, a TD to win the game is worth more than all the touchdowns before it. Now, if you want to play family feud, where the points are tripled at the end of the game, by all means have Brady, Manning, Rivers, Rodgers and Vick play family feud. If you want to call it “clutch factor”, then call it that. But 6 points is 6 points.

Take an example: a QB fails to score a touchdown at the end of the second half. The game continues and in the 4th quarter, the team is down by several points. Now a touchdown will win the game, whereas if the 2nd quarter TD was made, they’d have already won. QBR gives the quarterback more credit for the same touchdown that a better quarterback would have already made. But the better quarterback’s QBR would be lower since he didn’t have to attempt the 4th quarter TD.
So, a quarterback’s QBR is maximized when your own team has a bad defense and you do just enough to win.

This is a huge problem for teams with good defenses, who don’t need to score as many touchdowns as teams with bad defenses, and a problem to teams with good running games. Quarterbacks on a run-based or defense-heavy team aren’t asked to make the plays that merit high QBR ratings. Roethlisberger and Flacco both suffer from this

QBR mistakenly takes into account factors that don’t actually make a QB better.
-Facing a passing team forces your team to throw more, and will usually increase a QB’s QBR.
-Facing a quarterback around your’s skill level usually makes for a closer game, which gives both the best opportunity for a higher QBR.
-Having an offense that relies on 3rd downs (such as the Falcons’) inflates QBR since converting on 3rd down is “more important” than moving the chains on 1st or 2nd down.
-Facing a team with a bad secondary or bad defense is not accounted for at all.
-Having a bad O-line is not represented.

Instead, total QBR focuses on a quarterback doing “what is needed” to win a game. It is situational, and a quarterback’s situation is not in their hands. Or, sometimes the situation is simply their fault.
Sorry ESPN, your formula has huge, glaring flaws that make it almost useless.

Frankly, it's an awful formula. It is not only filled with subjective "statistics" like clutch factor, but it places too much weight on coming from behind. The way this formula is set up, you're a better quarterback if you squander numerous scenarios where you could have won the game earlier but still barely eke out a win later. Almost losing is better than decisively winning. Riiiight.

It makes ESPN's favourite Quarterbacks look the same as/worse than those that they love to bash.

ESPN can't be seen to show complete, unrelenting, unfounded favouritism.

2009 Vince Young TEN QBR: 69.2 (Above 65 = Pro-Bowl like season)
QB: 82.8
Comp: 152
Att: 259
Pct: 58.7%
Yds: 1879
TD: 10
INT: 7
Rush: 55
YDs: 281
Avg: 5.1
TD: 2
Sacked: 9
YdsL: 36
Fum: 8
FumL: 2

This is definitely an outlier to this system, thus, not perfect at all. However, I assume it gives a better and accurate picture if a QB had a good season. I don't know how Vince Young had a good season in 2009, when he couldn't throw the ball. I hope they didn't put Chris Johnson's ridiculous 2000 yd year as a weighted score to boost Vince's value up.
