Oh ok, sorry dont really understand everything with cap and aint going to front about it, and your right i have read that it only frees up 1.5 million from you or someone else.

No worries, its just been brought up so many times I get frustrated. The technicalities can get quite difficult. It has to do with how much money he has already been paid vs. how much of that money has gone against the cap. Simply put he has around 6M in "dead money" that would go against this year's cap if he was released. Thats why it would only save around 1.5M.

gabefergy, where are you getting these figures from? did u check them out on an internet site or what? id just like to see where our cap is going, or whos on the big contracts, or could you post up roughly how its being spent.

becasue when teams like the colts and pats pay a huge salary to their qbs and still have more cap than us, you just wonder how wisely we spend are money

They gave big contracts to Stanford Routt, Richard Seymour, and Kamerion Wimbley. Like huge contracts. i believe Seymour got 2 yrs 30 mil, Routt got 3 years 45 mil, and Wimbley got like 5yrs for 55 mil? (not too sure on Routt and Wimbley, but i know they got huge contracts as well).

Pretty close. Wimbley has a 5 year, $48 million deal and Routt will earn $31.5 over the next 3 years. They're both good players, and had very impressive 2010 campaigns. However, throwing $35 million dollars at 3 players is unfathomable. They've deserved to be given extensions, but not of this caliber.

woo! yeah i didnt know the exact numbers, just knew in the ballpark of where they were.

But yeah they are both good players, just not worth all that money. That is a lot of money for 3 players, and its the Raiders, when they have bigger needs in other spots and now they have no money and gotta get rid of people.

Their are TWO sets of exemptions. Three 1 mil exemptions and ONE three mil exemption.

Ngata extension will free up approx 5 mil according to Aaron Wilson and the Baltimore Sun
Ravens currently under by 3.5 mil according to ESPN
Floyd contract would cause about a 1.5 mil hit on the cap depending on his signing bonus

Therefore, the Ravens would be in the neighborhood of 7 mil under the cap following a Ngata extension and Floyd signing. They would not have used the 6 million in exemptions and would be primed and in good shape to make a run at a player OR saving up for next year when Flacco and Rice are due. You can guarantee that Foxworth will be released in 2012 because he has something like a 7-9 mil cap hit next season and all his signing bonus would be paid out. That will be necessary for sure.

dont forget that the new CBA allows you to borrow up to 3m from future caps

ROTOworld has a roster for each team that gives the contract details for each player. Ravens 24x7 also has some pieces about the salary cap although I am not sure how accurate some of their numbers are. They arent experts by any means.

As for how we allocate our salaries, most of our money is tied up in our big Defensive stars: Lewis, Reed, Suggs, Ngata, Johnson, Foxworth all make considerable coin.

Just to be clear, its also possible with the new CBA these things can change. I am not familiar with how teams are penalized by releasing players and whether it goes against this year's cap or next. It's possible that we could cut a player like Foxworth and have some of his salary go against next year's cap. However, this was not the case with the release of McGahee, Gregg, Mason, and Heap.

according to Rotoworld billy cundiff gets more than flacco
He does only because he's still on his rookie deal, that will change next year. Oh and ... Billy the Kid is a pretty damn good kicker

awh i know hes a good kicker and all, just seems alot money, but thats obviously what the best make
yea, it is alot of money for a kicker I agree, but he's definitely proven himself as one of the top 5 kickers in the league when you look at touchbacks, decent/good accuracy, strong leg. Im glad we paid the man.

Can someone please tell me how Ngata frees up cap space. I really don't understand how this works. Thanks
Right now Ngata is on the books for 12.5M because of his franchise tag. We can sign him to a long-term contract that will have a very large signing bonus. The amount of that bonus can than pro-rated across the length of that contract, say 30M over 7 years. Then you can structure the base salary of each year at different amounts. If they pay him a very small salary for this year like 1-2M than the salary cap figure for this season would only be 7/30 + the base salary of 2M for a total of 6.25M which is considerably less than 12.5M.

Im interested to see how the corners look in the preseason and how foxworths knee holds up, depending on how much philly wants Asante Samuel could b a good target since I think he is only making 5.5 million this year
Foxworth is a very smart man! With the statement he made regarding his knee not feeling very good, he accomplished one very important thing. He immediately lowered expectations for himself even though he may very well feel 100% in his knee. If he performs at his 2009 end of season level of play, he sets himself up very well for next season. Remember he has a very high number against the cap next year and is a likely candidate for release...

yea they definitely need to get a guy like Olin Kreutz in first, too bad it seems like Umenyioras window is closed and even if it were open the price is way too high...would have loved to see him on our defense
I thought Olin Kreutz was visiting the Saints today and may very well sign with them...

he seems like the only good option left on the market at center
yes... he is on the older side but i think if he is the right price were foolish to pass him up
