the first game ed came back the bills threw for over 300 yards on us. that game was closer than it needed to be. and ill point out that we were smothering the broncos until landry let lloyd get behind him in coverage. we may not have played spectacular teams those first 6 weeks but our secondary did what it was supposed to do. the bills couldnt find their way out of a wet paper bag and the week they played us they had a coming out party and decided they had an offense. if zibikowski didnt have this skin condition going on right now, i dont think the ravens even think about signing another strong safety. big z is very very under rated. it could be his lack of interceptions, or his lack of playing time. i think its something else but if i say it im sure a moderator will warn me but just use ur imagination

So the Ravens are worse with Ed Reed?

No financials, but it's a two year deal.

Ya that seems to be the point that he's trying to make... Or at least that our defense is better when Zibby is in at safety instead of Reed.

"The Ravens are apparently looking for depth at safety with Tom Zbikowski on the non-football illlness list with a skin condition. Extremely poor in coverage, Pollard did manage to lead the Texans with 112 tackles last season."

Good. He's good depth I suppose.

PFF:

"There’s a good reason why the Texans are expected to let him go (-6.1 rating, 70th out of 85 safeties who played at least 25% of their team’s snaps)."

A huge reason the Bills threw for over 300 yards was because Fabian chose to have his worst game as a Raven. Ed sat in center-field for the vast majority of the game and was powerless to do anything with how quickly DBs were getting beat.

And let's not pretend Fitzpatrick didn't throw a lot of yards in other games too. He put together some quality performances last season.

if that's the way it looks then that's the way u can take it. reed is a GREAT player. Quarterbacks do not want to throw at ed reed. and because of that, he can make the players around him better. but think about the safety position. if they get beat deep, or gamble and guess wrong, more times than not, the offense is going to make a big play. sometimes, and only sometimes, when our corners got beat, they thought they had safety help and either reed gambled, thought he saw something and he guessed wrong, or landry just got beat or didnt play his spot right. im not taking anything away from ed reed. he's earned the right to do whatever he wants to do. but my football coach stressed 3 things. alignment, assignment, and execution. when you have someone like zibikowski in there, just being reliable, not breaking his alignment and assignment, he may not get thrown at and get the big interception numbers, but more times than not he also isnt going to get beat. you guys can take that for what you want.

I personally like a safety who can cover (i.e. Zbikowski, Nakamura, and of course Reed). We need guys who can pick up coverage duties so that Reed can do what he does. Having a hard hitter helps, but pure hitting safeties are being phased out in the league. If this guy really is as bad at coverage as people say, well.... ughh

I hope he's very successful here, though.

He'd be a great pickup. I don't know much about his coverage skills, but I know he can blitz. I remember him giving the Ravens fits in Houston with the safety blitz. Everybody wants a pass rusher, who says it has to come from the D-line? This could set up a deceptive defense. Have an extra safety and make it look like we're playing for coverage, then send Pollard at the QB along with the linebackers. No reason he and Zbikowski can't rotate. The rest of the defense goes in rotations, why not the strong safeties. Both Pollard and Zbikowski are good enough to be starters. Maybe throw Nakamura into that mix too. A lot of different looks with those 3.

Zbikowski has speed, range, and can hit hard. I like hte signing but I just don't really see how it helps our team that much. I think Zbikowski can be a pro bowler. I haven't seen much of Pollard though, so here's hoping he's a beast.

jimmysmith3- where are you getting the info on Pollard's contract?

Aaron Wilson from the Carroll County Times reported it on his twitter account. He just specified that it was 2 years and not how much money it was for though.

I think Zbikowski is still the starter at this point, why would a skin condition keep him off the field, but Pollard does provide veteran depth at the safety position. I don't think Haruki is anything more than a special teams player. Pollard sounds like a Landry clone, a hard hitting run stopper with minimal coverage skills. With Ed Reed in the backfield, that's not an issue anyway. And, if Reed goes down, I think a Zbi/Pollard pairing is more solid than a Zbi/Ruki one.

Let's not bring the race card into this.

Not only are discussions about race prohibited here (this is a football message board, after all), but discrimination has no place in football considering the large demographics that watch the sport, the growing minority presence in football operations and coaching, and the huge African-American presence on football rosters in addition to growing racial diversity at each position over time.

the game reed came back, which was the buffalo games, was the first time fitzpatrick threw for more than 300 yards. in fact, he threw for 382 yards. he only threw for over 300 yards 1 more time in 2010 and that was against the bengals. 316 yards. both games he tied a season high 4 tds as well.

I doubt he is being brought in for just depth. This guy is a beast in run support and pass rushing. I've watched this guy play a ton and if its a competition between him and zibby. Bernard is probably going to win.

I love Zibby. And I thought he would get a chance. So I don't know exactly why Pollard is here. But since he is, might as well use his strengths.

Not familiar with him, how is he compared to landry abd zibby
Better run support than Landry and equal to him in coverage. As for Zibby, jury is still out since we dont know much about him.

Pollard was dubbed "The Bonecrusher" while at Purdue for his hard hits and tackles. Makes sense since he took Brady out for the season in 08.

Pollard signed with the Houston Texans on September 24, 2009. In his first year with Houston, Pollard had a career year, racking up 102 tackles (81 solo), 1.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, as well as 2 defensive touchdowns. Pollard played in just 13 games for Houston, but was a major part of the defensive turnaround.

Wait until Pollard sacks Big Ben off the edge. The message board will be going crazy and doling out nicknames (which we love to do).

I'm hoping we get a big sack/fumble for once.

Great signing, now lets get a 2nd WR with experience/starting RT, and our team will be complete.

Jah reid is looking like a beast. Some depth would be nice though
