Adding Friends

Not sure if there is any kind of protocol for adding other users as friends. I like to add folks that seem to post rational info that seems knowledgeable. Makes it easier to follow their posts.

Is it polite to shoot the person a PM and let them know? Is it rude to add folks randomly? Do I have to save them a piece of my Birthday cake?

Pretty simple but figured I'd check before adding a bunch of folks and seeming like that weird internet stalker guy!!
