After 11 NFL seasons and two Pro Bowls, former Rams and Ravens QB Marc Bulger said he is retiring. More at ESPN.com.

wow, tyrod must be the best QB ever, i wonder how he fell so far in the draft, i wouldnt be so sold on him, he's got a few years of learning to do before he's a capable backup IMO

we need to sign a Vet QB for cheap
I wonder how Brady fell so far too, and how Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, and Warren Moon went undrafted.

Did Joe miss any plays last season? I can't recall Bulger taking one snap!

Exactly...why spend money on a back up

As others have said, there are more capable QBs than Tyrod available right now, including Marc.

Your second sentence couldn't be farther from the truth. Both Super Bowl teams last season saw their QBs miss time, and their seasons didn't end.
Both of those Superbowl teams have back ups that are better then all the free agent QB's available too

You idiots.
Tyrod is an amazing QB.just because he's athletic doesn't mean he can't throw the ball.
The only 2 QB's better than him in passing % last year were Andrew Luck and Kellen Moore (both of whom VT played, oddly enough).
He and Torrey have been hanging together since the draft, and I'm sure they've been practicing some routes and etc.

Give the kid a chance, for god's sake, before saying something like "if Flacco goes down and Tyrod comes in, our whole season is a loss"

And someone suggested Patrick Ramsey? what the heck?
i agree 100%
****s like you are the reason I can't root for any NFL teams
Watch some of Tyrods film before making an assumption like that. That kid is the hungriest rookie out right now, considering he stuck with being a QB even though no one said he'd make it in the NFL as one. Now all the Ravens coaches are raving about him
agreed!

IF the coaches are feeling that Tyrod may be ready to be the backup to Joe.....then everyone else needs to...well, i won't say that and get in trouble here. use your imagination!

Not trying to imply that Joe's invincible, I was just wondering out loud if Bulger played at anytime last year. Ideally, I would like for our back-up to see the field during the regular season. That means we're sitting on a comfortable lead (or getting blown out)and it gives them game experience.

I don't think Bulger took one regular season snap last year, but I could be wrong.

And without even taking one snap for us as the back-up QB. How's that for durable Joe in a division with the Steelers?

Might want to go knock on wood. Losing Joe to the Steelers in week 1 would pretty much ruin the season.

Agreed. One thing that's always impressed me, last season in particular, was how Joe would take a hit or a sack and just manage to deal with it. Even in '09 when he got hurt it didn't prevent him playing. Kudos for that.

In my opinion, Tyrod will be our #2 unless we bring in a vet after roster cuts for the regular season. No one really out there right now, I'll pass on the Croyles and Delhommes, Tyrod is already better than them anyway.

Do the Patriots care who is the backup QB? What about the Colts? Are the Chargers fretting over who can take over if Philip Rivers gets hurt? Of course they are, because that's the front office's job in the NFL, but it's way down on their list of priorities, and none of them are going out to find a veteran QB who can take over, despite the fact that they would all be counted as capable of making a Super Bowl run. The Saints aren't afraid that Drew Brees will melt down and need replacing; even the Falcons, with a QB nearly identical in qualifications, aren't rushing to find a backup QB.

The point there is who cares who is backing up Joe Flacco. With Flacco we're a contender, and unless you're willing to spend starter money on your second string QB you're gonna be screwed in the passing game when you're starter goes down barring some freakish takeover by your backup. The Ravens are as ready as any top team for a major QB injury.
Brady, Phillips and Manning play different styles of offense than the Ravens do. They are more pass first and rely on them making good football decison. (Not that Flacco can't) But the Ravens run the ball first to set up play action and so forth to set up the pass. The Patriots, Chargers and Colts are built to pass and their respective QBs make the decision on the field at that time.
Flacco is not built for that but I think he would do fine if the situation calls for Flacco to pass 50 times a game, but if for some reason he would go down do you think a rookie could right the ship and take the Ravens to a Super Bowl. Highly unlikely! If Manning or Brady goes down this year their season is done. But for the Ravens if they have decent back up to fill in for Flacco they could still reach the big game because of the style of offense they run and the defense.
I think the Ravens will bring someone in, maybe not now but after training camp cuts are made.

There is no comfortable leads in the AFC north. Were you guys comfortable when we were up on the Steelers in the divisional playoffs?

Would us up being 42 to 0 with 5 minutes be comfortable enough for you? They're talking about blowouts not just having the lead late in games.

Todd Collins (Chicago Bears)
17-year veteran
Collins is a longtime backup who really caught fire during the 2007 campaign when he led the Redskins to three consecutive victories to close out the regular season and guide the team to the playoffs. Collins finished that year with a 106.4 passer rating. He also saw time in the postseason last year for the Chicago Bears.

No!!!!! Did you see Collins last year when Cutler went down. The guy can't even throw the ball accurately 5 feet anymore. He isn't even serviceable as a backup. The Bears had to replace him with the UDFA Caleb Hanie.

If that's the case lets just cut the fat and go TT.

When our offensive coordinator calls a backup special, I think that coordinator for one would call him qualified as a backup.

Not to mention, I'd rather save that roster spot for one of our recievers. That way we can keep LaQuan, Hardy, Marcus Smith, or one of the others the Ravens planned on cutting.

Gosh I remember that...that was BAD! Cutler got sacked a million times and finally got a concussion then he came in and looked even worse...NOT A OPTION!

There really arent very many quality vets out there. I think Brody Croyle is probably the best of the bunch. At this point though, Taylor may be just as good an option as anyone else. Dissapointed that Marc decided to retire.

I say we keep Tyrod as the backup and sign a quality RT to protect Joe or else he'll be out starting week 1 against the Steelers when they blitz Reid with Woodley, Harrison and Polumalu. As I recall Jah Reid was an excellent run blocker but his pass blocking wasn't quite as strong. That really worries me.
