Steelers Still $7 Million Over Cap

49 posts in this topic

They already had to release two o-lineman. I'm curious to see who else they have to cut to get under the cap.

I wonder if Hines "Cheap Shot" Ward will be a cap casualty. With the emergence of Mike Wallace and his advancing age and off the field issues, I wouldn't be surprised. They might have to lose some depth along their defensive line now, but if there's a way to avoid cutting their defensive guys they'll do it.

But wait, every top team in the NFL is making moves to get better, we aren't!

News for you all. Steelers need to cut even more guys.

http://www.steelersdepot.com/2011/02/steelers-2011-salary-cap-total-current-roster/

Gone:
Max Starks
Flozell Adams
Antwaan Randle El

Signed:
Willie Colon
Ike Taylor

Cut List:

James Farrior or Larry Foote - the Steelers are paying a lot of money to 3 ILBs in Foote, Timmons, and Farrior.

Byron Leftwich - paid too much for backup position

Limas Sweed - Considered a bust

Arnaz Battle - Overpaid to be 4th string WR

Reconstructed Salary List (may get cut either way):

Aaron Smith - age 34 with $4.5 million. He's not getting any younger.

Hines Ward - age 34 with $3.0 million. At the twilight of his career.

Brett Kiesel - age 32 with $3.025 million. Age and a injury might equal to paycut.

Casey Hampton - age 33 with $3.910 million. He's still dominant, but age will catch up fast.

Possible Trade:
James Harrison to (Jets, 49ers, Patriots, Cardinals, Chargers, Bills)

He's an outspoken, mean attitude player who's not getting any younger. Having two stud OLBs is a luxury, however since Polamalu is due for a pay raise next year, the Steelers who can package a nice deal with Harrison to some pass needy team for a 1st rounder like the Richard Seymour trade.

Once Harrison is out, the Lamar Woodley era begins. Steelers better trade fast before Harrison damages his trade value.

I wonder if Bill Belichick can handle James Harrison's bad attitude.

He would be crazy getting those one on one matchup after Haynesworth and Wilfork get double teamed.

You can dream, but Harrison isn't getting traded or released. The Steelers value their pass rushers the way the Jets value their corners. Look to the line to get cut, not the linebackers.

Yeah Harrison is a big part of their pass rush, but if the Steelers were smart, they should look for trade offers for Harrison because he's not getting younger and may be one sentence away from suspension. The dude is looking for trouble. With Harrison gone, they still have Woodley to take the charge, while they groom Jason Worilds and Chris Carter.

Next year is a big year for pass rushers. But if they traded Harrison to the Bills and got a 1st rounder. They could be in for the Vontaze Burfict sweepstakes.

Your article is from Feb. 11th...

Similar to the Ravens renegotiating with Ngata, to sign a long-term contract to get cap relief, the Steelers are renegotiating with Lamar Woodley:

"I think we can (avoid cutting players for salary-cap reasons) based on what we have right now, Colbert said."

It started on Feb. 11th. If you actually look at the site, it updates itself.

Amazing... :o

Even with negotiation with Woodley, that will take out what 2-3 million dollars. That means that aging D-line need some paycut.

How bad is it going to get for the Steelers? This should make for some interesting moves during training camp.

Pitt will be fine. They will, as usual, be one step ahead of baltimore and will prolly stand in their way again this year for a home playoff game

Werent they supposed to be in trouble last year with bens suspension? How did that turn out? Ended up doing a bit better than baltimore

It'll be interesting to see who they cut. They're getting worse this offseason instead of getting better
[/quote]

That's the thing with the Steelers you can never count them out based on the way they spend during FA. Their FO is always two steps ahead it seems on everything.

What makes me feel so strongly about this is how the whole Santonio Holmes trade went down. Lose Holmes then 2 rookie WR's step up and they end up back in another Superbowl. It's like they have Super Soldier Serum at the ready and every time they seem to lose one of their play makers out comes another.

Big Ben has agreed to restructure his contract to create cap room for the Steelers. It's possible that this could free up $4 Million in Cap Room for the Steelers.

Kiesel has restructured as well as harrison, and its being reported that hampton and ward and some others might be doing the same

I would like to see Foote and Gay cut though

Just as much as Pitt is concerned about Baltimore. And NO player or coach would say anything different!!

Every dog has it's day and the Steelers luck won't last forever, just look at every other dynasty that has fallen off the cliff.
