Who Do You Want To Backup Rice?

65 posts in this topic

#2

Tim Hightower, a capable receiver and short yardage guy who was always stuck with bad playcallers who didn't know how to best use him - Haley, Whisenhunt - and should be cheap and want to play for a title contender.

or

Trade a sixth for currently injured Chris Ivory, who had the best stats of the Saints running backs last year but is likely fourth on the depth chart because of the money the others are making. 133 carries, 716 yards, 5.2 ypc, 5 TD.

#3

Anthony Allen or Damien Berry

Although I am a Damien Berry fan...

I want to see Michael Bush or Ronnie Brown signed to back up Rice...
Maybe even McClain now that we have officially signed Leach.....

Why do so many of you want a 7th round pick or an undrafted free agent to back-up Rice as opposed to a pro bowler in McClain?

Not advocating for or against anyone here, but McClain was/is a probowl FB due to yards achieved out of the norm for a FB. He has struggled to get short yards for us in the last 2 yards and as I've said before, I feel he is way overrated. This could be evidenced by the fact that he is still available....

Ronnie Brown would be my preferred option.

I think it will come down to Allen or Berry. I don't see us signing a Veteran.

McClain would cost too much and it's a back up position. Let's save some money and utilize the guys on the roster to get a couple of carries.

Injuries worry me with Brown, but that would be a coup if we could get him cheap.

If we acquire another back we need a bigger back to complement Ray in the run game, Michael Bush wouldnt be the guy but you never know

I know we don't have any cap space left since we have just signed Leach, but just imagine if we had Leach blocking for Ray, then Marion Barber on short down situations. Unfortunately, Barber is in Chicago, but just take a minute and image these tsunamis crashing through James Harrison. It would have been sweet.

I think we are set at RB. We have Rice and Allen. Another option is Parmele or the new kid from Miami.

Ronnie Brown would be sick. And he's been on the market for a while now, might be able to get at a nice discount. Sure he'S injury prone. But in a limited role he should have better odds to last.

Plus we could run the wildcat with somebody that is actually a threat to throw the ball, unlike when we had Troy Smith. :P

But I don't see backup RB as a priority. This would be some nice icing though. Still like to see some vet depth on the O-Line.

Ronnie Brown in the "wildcat" reverses field, pitches it to Boldin, who in turn tosses it deep to Torrey for 6...ha!

It's not that people don't want McClain to back up Rice, but let's face it for his career McClain averages a little over 3 yds per carry.. YES 3 years he led us in rushing but we had an injury ridden backfield....

*about 7th rounders and undrafted RBs well RB is the position most likely to produce a good quality starter with that status, because its such a smooth transition... McClains main advantage is that he already knows the system and is a solid pass protector...

Who Knows if that 7th rounder or undrafted free agent back could become the next Arian Foster, Terrell Davis, Priest Holmes etc

R.Brown actually played all 16 games last season.. I would hope we don't pretend to bring the "wildcat" back, given Cam Cameron already does a horrible job calling plays, he doesn't need yet another idea clouding his judgement lol

The point is you never do know... Bush is young only 24 BIG 245lbs and has shown flashes in Oakland of what made him special at Louisville before the leg injury..
Ronnie Brown is not thought of as a "big back" but he is around 230lbs and runs physically...
Brown is a more accomplished receiver out of the back field but Bush has shown he has capable hands while playing with erratic QB play in Oakland...

We are going to have two guys back Ray Rice this season. Damien Berry and Anthony Allen. This is going to be a really unique 3 headed monsters, where each head looks like a different species!!!

I don't know, McClain behind Leach when we need a yard or two sounds fantastic.

Other than that, I say we go for Frank Gore to backup Rice. He's obviously unhappy right now, who says a trade isn't in the realm of possibility.

Seems that backs are a dime a dozen these days my guess is that the ravens will get a veteran to help with the load .

Both Allen and Berry have bright futures, but I'd love to Ronnie Brown brought in. He's still an effective runner and better than Rice in pass protection.

People keep saying McClains ypc average the year he was our RB but fail to mention we were a predominantly run first, sort of one dimensional team at the time. It was Flacco's 2nd year I believe and Cam really had the cuffs on him bringing him along slowly as a caretaker to try to let Rex and the D close out games. Teams literally stacked the box on us and we led the league in rushing attempts I believe that season so to use McClains ypc for that season is being truely unfair to McClain. Yea,we had a beast of a FB and a beast O-line but when teams constantly have a safety in the box playing the run, it's only so much those two factors can do.

Okay, his career YPC is still just 3.8, though.

I could very well see a situation where McClain is back in Baltimore.

The signing of Leach pretty much means he'd be back as the #2 RB and that's seemingly what he wants anyway.

LeRon McClain has worked hard this offseason to kind of transform his body into that of a RB, and at least 2 people in the Castle think McClain would make a pretty good RB(Harbs and Cam). So I wouldn't completely rule out McClain's return.

Ok, that's mostly based off of the season he was a RB b/c the other seasons, I'm sure he didn't prolly have over 30 carries and FB's ypc averages isn't high anyway so 3.8 sounds about right.

Well to be honest, the Ravens wouldn't really ask for big plays out of McClain. He's be more of a short yardage goaline type anyway imo.

McClain played RB for one season, so it's not like we're talking about a career RB. That 3.8ypc would probably get better with more experience.

I think the chances of his return are slim, but I don't rule it out. I think it would be great to have McClain back.

I wouldn't be against his return to the purple and black, but I routinely remember quite a few short yardage situations where he came up short. Now, I am not deaf to the fact that we certainly had oline issues last year, but I just don't believe he's a great RB. Said it before and I'll say it again, I think he's overrated!
