Just came across this update on Roto saying that Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

I'm no psychology professor, but wouldn't be surprised if a lot of athletes were diagnosed with BDP.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the way college and pro scouts treat these young men. When everyone is telling you how great you are and throwing millions at you, you're bound to get a big ego.

Not a huge surprise, knew he was unbalanced in some way... How could you not?
Then, as if a switch had been flipped, Marshall's fuse is lit. The Miami Dolphins' star receiver becomes agitated — then deflated — after watching his lesser-known contemporary Calvin Johnson in a national television commercial.
LOL! This part made me laugh.

Anyways, this doesn't excuse Marshall's behavior by any means but it somewhat explains it.

I'm glad that Brandon Marshall's getting help, but at the same time, I question how much of his documented behavior can truly be attributed to this mental illness. For instance, while a person's schizophrenia may explain erratic behavior, it doesn't account for every single lapse of judgment. That's too convenient and irresponsible of an assessment when there's plenty of other factors that go into poor decisions.

Ok, what in the world does this have to do with the article. Do you have any idea what it's like to have a psychological disorder? He's been diagnosed by professionals, I don't see what his "ego" has to do with anything. He's sick. There's an imbalance in his brain, yet you say something about about his ego. I like Marshall, and this makes me respect him even more. For him to be a man and seek professional help let's me know that he's scared for himself and the people around him. Even if he does have an ego, he followed his dreams and is playing professional football. For him to get help can only better him as a human being, not an NFL star.

My favorite quote that I took away from this was,

"Before this ordeal I kept asking God to show me my purpose. He gave me this," Marshall said. "I'll be the face of BPD. I'll make myself vulnerable if it saves someone's life because I know what I went through this summer helped save mine."

That's special. I'm proud of Marshall, and I can relate with his quote. I truly hope that his sickness is cured and he can get back to his woman and playing football without the drama.

I dont think anyone even came close to implying that.
But when people have major issues, like Brandon, more often than not it stems from traumatic events in their lives. Not everyone is born crazy, some just end up that way.

Having a disorder can affect someone to the point where it feels like the world is ending and there's no way out. You feel as if you're literally trapped in your mind. Character flaws can stem from this imbalance, not saying that it's an excuse, but it is for certain people. It's easy to look at someone like Marshall and see what he's done in the past, and correlate his issues with an "excuse" and think that he's just using this as a way out. But I guess if you've never fallen victim to having a psychological disorder, you'll just never understand.

In a way, your assessment is right, if overly simplistic. An aggregation of symptoms which have a detrimental effect on an individual's ability to maintain personal and/or professional relationships is a hallmark of this disorder. You should do a little simple background research before passing judgement:

wikipedia entry

therapist discusses disorder

Often, the poor decisions individuals with BPS make are rooted in bad coping skills, that is, they have learned to react to situations, especially stressful situations, in inappropriate or detrimental ways. Sometimes this is rooted in anxiety and even on past experience (that is, the behavior becomes a vicious cycle). Pursuing therapy is a good move for him.

brandon marshall about 4 hours ago came out with the fact he has BPD . having a wife with this disorder I know all to well what his wife is going through . more importantly we should all have some patience and compassion this disorder leaves people in an utterly hopeless sense of self . His assertion to help himself and others is remarkable it shows that he does care to get better and more over he cares how he affects his fans . Kudos for stepping out and stating this is his problem and he needs support and also wants to help others who have it as well.

i am proud of Marshall. as a black man myself, our community is hush-hush when it comes to any forms of mental illness. my mother suffered from Schizophrenia later in years prior to her passing last year. for Marshall to come out and publicly admit his condition was courageous and should help a lot of people. we may see a few more sports figures come out and open up about their "sceret" conditions. good for you Brandon!

Having gone to a psychiatric ward as a part of my psychology project I've upfront seen the struggle and suffering that patients go through--the worst is feelings of being alone. I have to give Marshall much respect for coming out and admitting his problem to help him and others. Mental illnesses are such a tough disease to handle because it's hard to pinpoint it or materialize it in a way that you can easily see and fix. It's a struggle and when you are constantly in the limelight of the media it must have been an even harder ordeal for Marshall. I wish him and other people who suffer from mental disorders only the very best.
