Love how on the first page you're all praising him, then the bashing starts as soon as preseason week 1, haha.
That is pretty interesting. His haters seem to grow by the game too.

Exactly. Hopefully he shines next week and his excuse about concentration is true.

Hopefully! Let's see how many guys hop back on the bandwagon. Then we'll see topics like "Torrey is the next Moss" or "Trade Boldin?"

This board cracks me up.

People seem to forget that Torrey Smith is running routes opposite of Nnamdi Asomugha, Brandon Flowers, DeAngelo Hall while Tandon Doss and David Reed and LaQuan Williams are running routes opposite of the Derrick Martins/David Pittmans/Frank Walkers of their respective teams.

Never ceases to surprise me.

Everyone who did some research on the draft knew going in that Torrey Smith was a project WR and not someone who could be expected to be a team's number one guy right away. He has great height, weight, and speed, but he needs work to develop his route running. He might have served as the number two guy had we not brought in Lee Evans, but we're all more comfortable with him having extra time.

On the other hand, Doss is a polished route runner with good hands, but without elite size or speed. He has the tools to be a crafty possession receiver, and there's nothing wrong with guys like that. Chad Ochocinco was a smart guy who ran good routes and was able to get open without the speed you'd expect of a guy with his kind of numbers. If he could be Chad in his prime that would be a great pickup. If Torrey Smith could be Randy Moss then he would be one of the greatest.

that's what I was saying the first couple weeks too...but I cant come up with an excuse for his stone hands...well, other than maybe he is just nervous.

i'm not bashing him just yet...the only way that will happen for me is if this butterfingers act continues...other than that, there is very little that will convince me to not give him a full season

He's reportedly had perfectly fine hands in camp. I honestly think its nerves. He's overthinking everything, getting frustrated, and simply playing without confidence.

As has been stated, Roddy White wasn't stellar his first couple years in the NFL. I'm not saying Torrey is the next Roddy White, but the season hasn't started yet. Give the kid a break...

Haha, all his post needed was a reference to Boulden and using numbers as words, and it would be a masterpiece.

and thats exactly it! You can actually praise some of his routes he has run to get open against quality CB's. However, it looks really...really bad when you drop easy balls like he has. He will come around, alot of pressure is on him, but time is on his side. Luckily we have pleanty of guys who can do the job until he is ready (if he is ready).

the problem is fans dont have any patients now a days, they except a player to be great right away as in after 1 game, you people ask to much
it is true...we do tend to expect too much from our young guys. Hell, I lost a bet last year because of it (I made a bet that Flacco would throw for 4000 yards and 25 TDs. Flacco ended up falling almost 400 yards short). Speaking of Flacco, he is a perfect example of high expectations. When he puts up a great game, no one sings his praises -- the attitude is so what, he's supposed to do that. And when he has a bad game...well you know...

I expect 1/28/01 to be on this one in a jiffy. Is there a doctor in the building? (See what I did there?)

Nice find....ha!

But, as Fly stated, I am more annoyed when people (Ravens followers no less) are spelling our players names incorrectly! That's what I find humorous! The post you're referring to is a good one though ;)

As for Smith, Im not ready to write him off after a few poor preseason performances. We'll see how he is mid-season and go from there.

when Torrey relaxes and stops thinking sooooo much and just play the game of football that he has been doing all his life...he'll be alright!

well, thats part of the concern...the guy has played WR for only 3 years. He was very productive in that time, which is the main reason for the excitement surrounding him...but he smells an awful lot like his Terp counterpart (DHB -- Damn Huge Bust). And that was my opinion of him before he ever put on a Ravens jersey...not much has changed since then..

Hope you're right. We've seen his potential, but potential means nothing. He needs to just play football. You don't think the game, you play the game. I'll admit my early thoughts on him were a little too optimistic, but I have high hopes for the future.

ive said it before... Torrey Smith is raw because the scheme he came from out of college... What they ask him to do... As long as the guy fix the body catching problem... He will develop into a good # 2 WR in a couple of years.

This year i would use him as a pure deep threat... Nothing but deep routes (or screens) when he is in the slot in the 3 or 4 WR sets

His problems does have his bust probability higer then normal but i think he will develop into a solid #2 WR deep throat in a couple of years

As much as I aprreciate your optimism, I fully expect Torrey Smith to develop into more than just a deep threat .Perhaps the Ravens can speed up the process by targeting him 20 times next game.

Well, I think I can safely say that Torrey is the guy that the FO envisioned when they drafted him.

Here's to a long, successful career with the Ravens!

I still want a #1 receiver. This team would be 14-2 with a Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt. But we need to wait for them to fall to us in the draft, its not so big a need as to reach.

umm....how so? when Torrey and Nicks are the same height and almost same weight? How can you justify Nicks' success with Torrey's success when Torrey drafted 2011 and Nicks from 2009?

Torrey might be that guy for us.

All my preseason criticism of him aside, I did realize that Torrey has tremendous potential...I just never thought he would reach it.
And it still remains to be seen if he will, but he is well on his way. If teams start focusing on stopping Torrey, he wont have to be a 1200 yard, 10 TD guy because he would open up so much for the rest of this offense.

I just don't see Torrey as a number 1 receiver since he doesn't have great hands. Nicks is a bad example, Kenny Britt would be perfect for our offense. Or Vincent jackson, a big sure handed receiver who can get downfield and beat man.

Practice makes perfect and the will is stronger than the skill like Ali said. Jerry Rice dropped alot of passes in his rookie season, but with his outstanding work ethic he had developed into one of best WRs of all times. Torrey's chapter is not even finished written of his first page yet; alot of footballs are playing....
