Overpay Yanda with the 2nd biggest payoff for a guard when we have a significant salary cap on our heads.

Then we cut the most productive players in Ravens (Josh Wilson, Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Gregg). Then we decide to keep Foxworth for +7mill(missed the whole season, barely saved himself from being cut on 09' by playing 5 out of 16 games 'ok').

Josh Wilson gets signed a long term deal for only 4.5mill.

Now we have Anquan, Torrey(rookie), Ed Dickson/Pitta(BOMBED last year) for offense.
For defense we have Jimmy Smith(rookie), Webb(mediocre, liability) for CB's.

We still havent managed to nabb a single FA player that can contribute in our team.

Osi Umenyiora, Nnamdi Asomugha, Todd Heap(restructed), Mason(restructed deal) is all I can hope for.

If we dont make a single significant move in FA, say hello to our SB dream!

We didn't cut Josh Wilson. -_-

Lets not forget that plenty of big name vets around the league will be cut to make cap room still. The majority of it has yet to come.

Wait, so Holmes, Rice, D. Williams, C. Johnson, Hasselbeck, etc. aren't big names?
They're certainly names, but not blockbuster deals and there's still guys left on the market in addition to guys expected to be released and traded. In addition, the majority of free agents that have been signed, have been former stopgaps or backups on their teams last season.

Yes, but those were definitely some of the biggest names in the current FA pool... come tomorrow, all heck is going to break loose.

I dont see Osi being a good fit for us. And I honestly think we are pretty damn good at CB. Nnamdi is a luxury that I think we should make a play for regardless, but I wouldn't get my hopes very high on that.
Osi is still a premier pass rusher and him and Suggs rushing the outside would more than make up for a J. Smith learning curve. The D is missing a great compliment to Suggs.

Incredible pass rush > Shut down corners

We have a walk a thin line on the cap space. We have to make room for Ngata's contract as well as make up for FA signings. I still believe that Oz has something going on either in the WR, CB, Pass rush or OL department. We shall see.

The question you should be asking is, has Oz really disappointed you with FA signings?

Note, Foxworth injury wasn't Oz's fault. Nor with Stallworth.

The Anger Corner?
People always forget the truth about free agency.

Last year the Washington Redskins signed 19 free agents. They included names such as Larry Johnson, Willie Parker, Rex Grossman, Joey Galloway, Casey Rabach (remember him?), Ryan Torain, Phillip Buchanon, Vonnie Holliday... They won 6 games.

Denver dove deeply into the free agent pool, signing 11 new free agents. Justin Bannan (!), Brandon Lloyd, Jamal Williams, Nick Griesen, JJ Arrington, Jarvis Green... lots of recognizable names. The Broncs came up with 4 wins.

The Ravens signed two that we kept: Marc Bulger and Cory Redding.

Both the Colts and Falcons each signed one player.
Both the Packers and the Eagles signed three backups.
The Steelers signed four backups, including two former retreads - Randle El and Larry Foote.

Yet the Ravens, Colts, Falcons, Packers, Eagles and Steelers made the playoffs.

You DO NOT build Championship Teams by signing other teams' castoffs...

Let's all relax...

I have to admit I am on my twitter page like every couple of minutes expecting something nice out of the Ravens in free agency. We cut 4 stalwarts and resigned an important free agent in Yanda. However, we lost an equally important one in Wilson.

And worst of all, we haven't a clue who we are going after in free agency after clearing all that cap space! Getting steamed is about right!

Good post on the truth. Free Agency is a pool of expensive players that will dig your grave if not played right.

Excellent post. The way I see is, Oz is more focused on Raven FA retention, then filling in needs. This method keeps locker room morale high. I understand that Oz had to let Heap, Mase, Gregg and McGahee know that they were getting cut and is working on doing something. Time will tell folks stay calm.

Do not lose sleep over millionaires getting cut or not resigned!

I agree. All have good coaches and draft systems and thats what you build a team off of. But its not like every year someone like Nnamdi is available. Hes a game changer, and too add that part to our defense would be make us greater! We already have shut down game changing safety. Game changing mlb,dt,olb. To add a CB to the equation would equal a great defense. Were already great against the run. If we had him the QB and OC would have to prepare how to get around all those players and always know where they are at, at all times.

I'm not too concerned about not bringing some big name in, but I'd like to keep the core we have together, which doesn't seem to be happening. I'm worried about this offense come week 1 without Todd Heap. Any word on whether the team is looking to sign him back? If we aren't going after anyone big, then please bring back some of our own. One or the other, but I don't want to see people drop like flies off the roster when were already in championship mode.

Agreed, but our castoffs (Wilson, Gaither, Heap) are more valuable than others.

I am confused as to why we made the drastic and public cuts with ostensibly no purpose. at this point i'm not even hearing us mentioned in the running for a lot of players beyond the nnamdi sweepstakes that could help us improve (especially after ditching mason and heap).. nearly everyone thinks we need to improve our pass rush.. so why not cullen jenkins... without mase we need to get another proven receiver but we didnt make a play for breaston or holmes and don't seem to be talking to anyone else... we could maybe use another tackle for depth and yet nothing so far...

even still even with the new rookie wage scale in place only torrey smith has signed so far (by the way this guy is doing everything right)...i know we can't really "sign" anyone until friday and i am thrilled we reatined yanda, but wilson is gone and carr might be right behind him.. in ozzie we trust but.........

If Ozzie can surprise us with the cuts like he did, he can surprise us with big signings. Not one reporter predicted our cuts. Just let it play out and dont get so fussy, we're a day and a half into FA. Things will fall into place.

Steelers signed one of their own, Ike and they might lose Colon to the Bears. Other than that, I don't see how they got 'better' as some have noted.

I wonder if they are concerned about everybody else? My guess, no.

We locked down the guy we needed to and are making moves behind the scenes for the guys we should look at, like Nnamdi and Leach. Getting angry is an overreaction, this is a situation where the fan base needs to exercise some patience. These guys we want aren't going to sign until tomorrow or Friday for sure, and we really only need to wait two days for the agony of uncertainty to end.

We'll walk away from this situation a better team, take a deep breath and calm down.

While we all want Nnamdi, it's important to note that every single Super Bowl team in NFL history did not have Nnamdi Asomugha. Alas, there is still hope no matter what happens.

Another good point. Teams that are making big splashes pretty much have to, Redskins, Seattle, Carolina. See a pattern here folks?

This is how free agency is usually for us. I"m glad the Ravens FO hasn't dug us in a ditch we'll be climbing out in a few years.

We signed Yanda, Working on Ngata. Let's sign our draft picks. FA isn't over either.

We'll be in the playoffs again.
I do not want to be in the playoffs AGAIN. I want to be in the SB. Playoffs. Been there, done that. Want more. I am concerned that we are losing much of the team and not gaining anything new so far, but I trust that Ozzie has a plan.

Give it time grasshoppers. The free agent list is still long. Plus many cuts have yet to arrive.

Ofcourse we want a SB, the FO wants one just as bad as we. They give us a chance to get that elusive SB every year. That's better than the majority of the league.

Super Bowls do not grow on trees. Stars need to align, some luck and some plays need to be made. At least the Ravens FO puts us in a position for those to happen.
