What's Going On At SS?

41 posts in this topic

So Dawan Landry is a free agent? I haven't heard anyone say anything about him. So is he coming back or will he go somewhere else?

If he goes who will take his place? I think Zib is also a free agent? So where does that put us at SS?

he was quoted earlier today saying he loves it hear and he wants to stay here , he says we were so close last year he wants to stay and finish the job or something like that, I wouldn't mind him staying if he wasn't expensive.

Most of us were predicting he would be leaving for the big payday all offseason. Historically, the Ravens have let SS walk with Ed Reed in the back field, Landry will be no different. He's a liability in pass coverage anyway, so it's best not to overpay him to stay.

Did you say Landry is better than Troy P. lol
They both are a liability in coverage though.

I would like to see what Tommy Z. can do.

Landry made 111 tackles during the regular season, whoever steps up wether it's Zibby or Naka has to to be able to do the same.

Not much talk about it, because most people expect him to go. Rumor mill has it that the Jaguars are interested.

So where do we go from there? Isn't Zibby a free agent as well?

Restricted. If Landry leaves Zibby would probably become the starter.

Here's an article from the Sun today about the Landry situation. As you can see, Ravens have a history of letting that position walk.

I think Landry tuffs it out with taking a decent salary with us instead of getting more elsewhere. Ravens took a chance on him in the draft and we are so close and I can see him staying being a true Raven like Yanda did.

As much as I love Landry, I don't think there'd be any difference at all if we let him walk. I believe T. Zibby and Haruki both have what it takes to stand in for him. Not to mention, me in particular would love to see Zibby strut his stuff :P

If Landry does walk because of salary cap reasons I believe that we have enough depth between Zibby and Haruki that we will be ok.

However, another thing to think about is the possibility of moving Webb to SS. When we first drafted him I didn't know much about him because he was from a relatively small school but I saw on br.com that he was listed as s/cb. Originally I thought Wow! we drafted another safety? (because at the time we were stacked with safeties). Anyways he turned out to be a pretty good cb, minus a few plays *cough* 3rd & 19 *cough*, but now with an open slot at SS and a long list of CBs(depending on resignings of carr/wilson) would it be worth trying him out at SS where he can play next to his idol Ed Reed?

Maybe, but have to consider the size difference Laundry is 6" 210-215lbs? Webb is 5"10 175-180lbs? I am not sure if Webb is big enough to come up and bang tackles on larger RB and FB like Laundry, but Webb would be much better in coverage.

Frankly it is unfair for us fans to expect abject loyalty from these players when the organization can lay the wood on them anytime they find it necessary. Remember, it wasn't too long back that they cut 4 players under contract that were not dead lumber either...

Having said that I do want the Ravens to field the best possible team regardless of who they cut or sign.

Man I agree with that big time. I understand them wanting to better themselves, but it seems like some of these cuts were unexpected and out of the blue.

Just heard Jack Del Rio wants Dawan.

That's fine. I want Zibi.

Some people low-ball Landry but I'm a fan of his. He isn't great by any stretch of the imagination but he's a solid veteran who brings leadership and hard work to the team. I'm not totally convinced Zbikowski or Nakamura would be as good as him, maybe cheaper, but better?

Why is there all this talk about Zibby? He's a FREE SAFETY and Dawan is clearly better in the backfield than he is.

Losing Dawan would really hurt our DBs because he's the anchor back there.

SS is a position I feel ok about, like Ravens Beast said: Zibi could fill in nicely IMHO and the UDFA safety we just got looks like he'll develop into a solid player

Although about 1/2 disagree, I also say let McClain walk. He wants to carry not block and already lost weight. Get a blocking fullback and utilize the plethora of backs we already have.

I'm torn on Landry. I think he's by and large a solid player, you can see from the number of tackles he recorded this season that he's not a slouch by any means. He's also capable of holding the fort down as the leader figure of the secondary as we saw when Reed was on the PUP.

However, his lapses (usually costly ones as well) would lead me to think that the Ravens should avoid a bidding war to retain his services. Especially when Zibby or Nakamura could come in and do a decent job. Knowing that we've Ngata to spend on still and Yanda who just got a lucrative deal means we shouldn't spend big on a guy who is much more expendable than they are.
