Plaxico On Ravens?

35 posts in this topic

Earlier this morning Mark Schlareth commented on ESPN that he thinks Baltimore is the best fit for Plax... not necessarily that he thinks hes coming here.

Now, as things stand with Mason and Heap being released (and without making any assumptions about them being resigned to cheaper deals) do you think Plaxico is a good fit for us with our current roster and stable of young WR's?

I honestly wouldnt mind seeing him come, I think he's still got it... and if we do lose both Mason and Heap (dont think we will, but IF) then I think Plax could be the perfect possession and red zone combo WR to replace both. Thoughts??

(And I appologize as I'm sure this his coming here has been discussed before, but in light of the recent releasings it really sheds some new light on the topic)

I'd be surprised if Schlareth could name the two WRs the Ravens drafted.

The team already has a possession WR who's strong in the red zone in Q. More importantly, he's younger than Plax, and hasn't been in jail for two years.

It took Vick a full season to regain his explosiveness. Why should the team waste time signing an even older player at a position where they already have talent?

NO OLD PEOPLE (unless his name is Nnamdi)

We should definitely be going with the youth route

What in the world makes you think "he's still got it" after 2 years in the pokey and 35 years of age??

Ah, we did this last year.
Get the young receivers on the field, yes they have to learn and mistakes will be made but it has to be done.
And they have one of the best in the biz in Boldin to learn from

I think hes still got it because his game is simple. He's not Vick who has to be explosive, quick, and have tons of technique. The dude runs 10 yards, jumps up and grabs a ball. And the last time he played he was probably the most dominant receiver in the game. 2 years in jail wont be a hinderence it will help him... time to rest and rebuild his body. If anything he'll be fresh and play much younger than 35.

Obviously this is all opinion but everyone said the same thing about Vick and now he's MVP caliber. Vick didnt take a year to develop, it took the Eagles a year to trust him as the starter. And yes, I want to see the young guys get a shot but I want some security and I dont want to break the bank for Holmes, Rice, or Smith. Id rather spend that money or OL or pass rusher or even Nnamdi or Joseph over a big name receiver.

And btw, Quan is the man but without another receiving threat to put fear in defenses hes gonna be constantly double and triple teamed unless Smith, Doss, Reed, Dickson and Pitta can step it up... and without much of an offseason I think its a bit unfair to expect that from 1st and 2nd year players from the get go.

Lol, so we cut Mason to take Plax in. That makes perfect sense. If you want size, just give Hardy some snaps. I'd be so mad if Mason was released for him.

Plax wasn't anywhere near among the most dominant WRs in '08. He played well early in the season, but then tapered off. I really don't see how two years off is going to help him. He has a less little wear on his tires, but he'd already played a good amount of football prior to landing in the slammer.

It did take a year for Vick to return to form. Even when he ran the Wildcat in '09, he didn't look like the player he was last season.

I don't see how Plax is synonymous with "security" either. It may presumptuous to expect rookies, and second-year players to contribute, but it's ludicrous to expect Plax to play like he did in 2007 in '11 in my opinion.

Plax is 33 about to be 34. So I wouldn't put him up there in age with Mason and other "really old" receivers. still. With that being said, I say no to Plax. When I think of signing him, I think of the same impact that Housh and Stallworth made on our team. Much Rather Sign a stud like Holmes especially that is one thing that we are lacking, CLUTCH.

I just like the simplicity of his game. No need to run clean routes or be especially fast... get to the first down marker and go up and get it. He's too big for secondary players and too athletic for LB's. Im not saying bring him in as our 2nd receiver, but i have a feeling he'll be cheap with so many big names on the market, and i think he can be a dominant situational player i.e. red zone and 3rd downs. Plax isnt just size, hes got hands and jump... if hardy had that he'd play.

and on the vick comment, hes not a wildcat player. he struggled in the wild cat bc they used him much like we used stallworth... it was the same play every time and they rarely let him throw. hes not a designed runner, hes an improv runner.

im not gonna defend plax, we all have our opinions... but i will say this, he will be the biggest FA steal. wait and see

took the words right out of my mouth. The only 'security' that Plax is synonomous with carry plastic badges and tight t-shirts

This is ridiculous. Either re-sign Derrick Mason or don't sign another WR. I really don't think we need it. We've got 3-4 up-and-comers and Anquan. Not to mention we have Dickson and Pitta. I'd rather see money being put in other positions.

im not saying hes the only option, but he will be successful. i know you dont need someone 6'5", his height has nothing to do with it... he will get a ton of first downs and TD's this season. thats all im gonna say. if you dont think so thats fine, I do and thats fine as well. I also like the fact that he wouldnt need to learn a whole lot bc his game is so simple. also 6'5" does help a bit when your qb is 6'6". he can throw straight instead of down.

im as optimistic as anyone when it comes to our young WR's but there is no evidence whatsoever that they are up and comers... half of our WR's as it stands havent played a snap of offensive football in the nfl. yea they need to see the field in order to evaluate their potential but i like plax as a cheap option in case things dont work out with the young guys. Also joe loves the out route and loves to hang the ball up; both fit plax's game perfectly. I just dont think a player loses the ability to run a few yards and go get the ball.

im just saying sign him, bring him to camp and if he doesnt have it cut him... if he does he's a steal.

He'd be taking snaps away from the young WRs that actually have a future with the team.

Even Calvin Johnson, one of the most physically dominant players in the league regardless of position, can't get away with being one-dimensional. Ten-yard fades may work occasionally, but it wouldn't take long for teams to catch on and know what was coming when Plax came on the field. And then what use would he be?

I'd rather see a young player go through the growing pains of running a full route tree, and finding holes in zones than see yet another old WR brought in.

Reed, i totally agree with you if this was last year and we were crowded with old WR... or even this year if we do bring Mase and/or Heap back. But right now we dont have ANY vet receivers outside Boldin. All, including TE's are 1st or 2nd year players who havent had OTA's, will have a shortened camp, ect...

I dont like signing him for more than a year, but i think his first year back hes gonna be hell bent on proving himself and will play at a high level. with his size he could probably take some snaps at TE as well.

That's easy for him to say because we just cut two guys in our receiving core. So ofcourse B-More is the logical place for any FA WR according to the talking heads.

Mase could very well be re-signed. Even if he isn't, I'd still rather see the team have faith that Flacco's growth(supplemented by better play-calling) can help the young guns overachieve even with the abbreviated off-season.

Plax may be motivated, but that doesn't change the fact he was declining before he went to jail, and hasn't played organized football in two years.

He'd get abused playing TE.

I wonder how often team doctors have to check the condition of a leg wound for physicals? *palm to forehead*

I'd rather Hardy be given the role that Plax would have here. Boldin's not bad in the redzone either when he's not running silly routes like fades or blocking third down or off the field or... you get the gist.
