Carson Palmer Retires

75 posts in this topic
Bengals owner Mike Brown and head coach Marvin Lewis met with the media Tuesday to discuss the start of the 2011 season. Both confirmed that they remain in a stalemate with Palmer, who demanded a trade this past January and threatened to retire.

"He has retired. I wish him well," Brown said, via Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "If he is going to walk away from his commitment, we're not going to reward it."

Mike Brown has too much ego. Just release him with a reconstructed contract saying that the Bengals owe him nothing if he's released.

At least he keeps his word.
Yeah Kudos for him. He stuck behinds his guns. I find it hard to believe we'll see the last of Palmer. He's only 31. He's probably hoping the Bengals move on and release his rights eventually so that he can come back.

But the Bengals owner is very odd, so it'll be hard if that's his plan.

I don't like this at all. How can Mike Brown just end the career of a Pro-Bowl caliber QB? It's one thing to be like Albert Haynesworth and cause nothing but problems within the organization, but Carson Palmer's been nothing of the sort; at least from what I've read.

Damn shame.

Can't say I'm surprised it's come to this. I'm glad it's happened as well because, like FerrariFan said, Palmer had our number. Losing him won't make them easy to beat, but will make them less of a threat.

Cincy is stupid. He obviously is not going to play for you. Now you get nothing instead of most likely a first rounder for the guy.

I applaud Brown for this. Palmer signed a contract. If he doesn't want to play it out, then he can retire. Teams should not be held hostage by disgruntled players.

But is it the other way around to an extent? I mean, the Bengals have been terrible for decades. I think that has more to do with bad management/ownership than the players.

Mike Brown continues to show us why he is arguably the worst owner of the worst franchise in the NFL. It's inexplicable why he won't get some value out of a 31 year old over the hill Carson Palmer, especially after drafting a young QB who could take over as the face of the franchise.

Uhh, I don't understand that at all. The owner made Palmer hostage. The owner knew Palmer was tired of the team since a few years ago, and Brown only made it worse by bringing in crackerjack Owens last year. Sure, Owens put up good stats, but he was also only increasing the headache that Johnson already made (not ever gonna call him OchoCinco).

And besides, I'd even go as far as say that Brown and his backers are pretty dumb, because why would you waste the opportunity to get picks from a team, even if they're low round picks, because Palmer is either not going to play again or play for another team.

Pride comes before a fall. And Brown has showed idiotic pride on this one.

It's more like Mike Brown and Al Davis are 1a and 1b in terms of worst owners in the NFL.

I applaud Carson Palmer for standing his ground and staying true to his word. Too bad the Bengals are stupid enough to not try to gain more picks to help rebuild the team.

But at least they didn't send out an email saying that the lockout was over before it even was..... oh wait... :melt:

Don't know about that. Looking at 'lil brother Jordan or rookie Dalton as starter. I'd say they could be easy to beat this year.

Well, obviously they'd be hard pressed offensively to find a way to win, but I could point to last year, week 2 when we lost 15-10. In no way would I say that their offense won them that one, all the credit goes to their defense. So by that logic they could still beat us that way.

Owners cut players all the time even in midst of a contract. I'm sure the Bengals have done it plenty and that is not honoring a contract themselves. Why should Carson Palmer do the same when he knows the FO is terribly run and refuses to make significant chances in hopes of improvement? Mike Brown comes off looking petty.

Mike Brown is not only being petty, he's being foolish. Fine with me if they don't trade Palmer, they'll just be worse for the future.

All they needed to do was trade the guy. Instead, Mike Brown had to be the man and stick it to him when it was completely unnecessary. He's blown an opportunity to get something valuable in return.

Yes, there is the argument that he did not live up to his contract. But that's nothing special. Anyone who retires at any age without finishing their contract can be in this category. But they don't hear about it from critics.

I don't see any reason to applaud Brown for this. Palmer made it clear he would not play for the Bengals. There are plenty of QB hungry teams out there that would have traded good picks for Palmer. Now, he might get to say "ha! now you can't play" to Palmer but his team is still without an experienced QB plus he gets nothing to better the team in the future. Dumb move.

Since when did Cincy become a team that stood it's ground when it comes to virtue and principals? lol

That's how I feel as well. Assuming no player misconduct, and the player doesn't pull a Haynesworth after getting a fat contract, of course.

I agree that Brown could have handled this situation in a way that would more benefit the team. BUT, I continue to support not giving in to Palmer's demands. No one held a gun to his head a couple of years ago to sign that long-term, very lucrative contract. He still has four years to go on it. He knew how the team was run when he signed. Nothing has changed.

Yes, teams cut players all the time, but keep in mind that when that happens, the player has already received his guaranteed money (which is generally substantial). Palmer took his bonus and now he wants out "just because". The only way Brown could 'win' would be to trade him to the next worse team in the league for a bevy of picks. If Palmer didn't like the trade, he'd still retire.

Palmer is acting like a spoiled child.

Palmers original contract extension was designed to free up cap room, he got a signing bonus then and another in the 07 team option, which they would have paid if they had declined. There isn't any guaranteed money tied up in "good faith" for the remaining 3 years. Mike Brown just wanted to play hardball and lost.

Just came across this on PFT and Rotoworld.... Carson Palmer has yet to file his retirement papers!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/23/carson-palmer-still-hasnt-officially-retired/

Palmer could still show up close to the season and force Mike Brown into a decision, since all contracts are guaranteed after week 1, Palmer can force Mike Brown to cut him or pay him the $11 Million he is due. The only problem here is that even if that happens, most teams are set at who is starting at QB so Palmer could be screwed either way.
