MERGED: General Reactions to the Reported Cuts

415 posts in this topic

Past achievements shouldn't cloud the reality of where a player is right now. There are reasons he was shut down in the play-offs.

Again, I'd like to see him return, but the team can't rely on him as much as they have in the past.

What do you want me to say? Your obviously not getting it. All the corners are faster them Mason. Teams play mason expecting that quick out route that padded his stats the last 4 years. We need to get better at his position period. Takes nothing away from what he has done. Mason makes mediocre corners look like Revis at this point. Theres some 50 year olds with good hands. Chris Carter still hot hands. Getting open and beating coverage is the key.
That's taking it too far. Mason can still feast on mediocre CBs. It's the better CBs he struggles again.

Speed isn't everything. There are numerous receivers who have found success that aren't as speedy as the corners they face.

"Mason makes mediocre corners look like Revis"
That's an incredible overstatement. I would agree to something like he struggles with top tier corners, but he still can do some damage against lesser corners, which most teams have.

With his exceptional route running and his smart veteran antics, he's still good at creating separation, though he may not be as good at it as he was before.

I'm not saying I don't like Mason <------ read that again. I'm saying we need receivers to beat corners more to win it and I agree with the front office if that means getting rid of a Derrick mason to do that. Regular season stats = nothing in the playoffs. Speed at receiver keeps Polamalu in coverage and out of the Box.

The only one I'm bummed about is Mase. I wanted to get him a ring. Hopefully we can sign him for less money. The guy is a great locker room and field leader.

You can never take away the fact he was and still is a WARRIOR. Love you Mase, good luck. Hope I see you resigned real soon.

Well, you certainly implied it on your "mediocre corners" statement.

I don't disagree with bringing in fresh talent, but it seemed like you were undermining his importance in the offense.

On ESPN, he did say the Ravens are looking to get a big ticket FA. The baltimoresun guy said possibly Aso or Holmes. Please oh please not Holmes Oz...

If it could work financially, you wouldn't want Holmes here for what reason?

Aso or Holmes would both be great fits. Nnamdi for obvious reasons, and Holmes is exactly what we need on Offense: speed, explosiveness, YAC ability. We all saw what he did against us, if we paired him up with Boldin we would legitimately have the best WR duo in the league.

I think everyone just needs to move away from the computers, phones, or whatever device you are logged in on.

What we all have to remember is that, this isn't a normal NFL Free Agency period. Things were perdicted to get real hectic once the lockout was lifted, and it's playing out as such.

Right now the Ravens were reported 5.5 under the Cap. Well because there will be no 72 hour window to resign your own players, the Ravens have to prepare to compete with 31 other teams for the services of manly Yanda and Ngata.

We can't just assume that those guys love playing in Baltimore so much that they'll take considerably less money to stay. So we will probably have to pay more for those guys then we were even prepared to.

Guys like Mason, Heap, Gregg and anyone else, getting cut are necessary evils right now. Now are we taking huge risk by allowing these guys to sit on the market unprotected? Of course.

However all those guys are in their last years and really close to retiring, so the chances of someone offering them big money, or even the type of money they made last year is highly unlikely.

This time will be unusual for the players, teams, and us fans. We just have to sit back and watch it all unfold. I'm sure if we dig deep enough, other teams who are in the same position as we are, are doing the same thing.

By Saturday I expect all of these guys, maybe even McGahee to be back on the team.

In a normal league year, all of these signs would be pointing to a guy like Nnamdi being on our radar for us to go after him hard, and i'm not saying that won't happen. But it's just an unsual time right now and usual things have to happen to accommodate these times.

So my advice is just sit back, and watch the whirlwind 2 weeks that about to take place, and hope it never has to happen again. But don't read too much into the names of guys getting cut.

My thoughts exactly !

IIRC if Santonio Holmes gets in trouble one more time he could face a year long suspension. I would definitely add him to the WR corps, but would want to make sure there is a clause in his contract to insure he stays out of trouble.

Good point. I'm not really for or against the Ravens signing him.

Ravens have yet to talk with veteran CB Chris Carr, who's been fielding calls from other teams this morning. Nothing happening fast yet.

mortreport Chris Mortensen via twitter
I wouldn't be surprised to see Todd Heap end up with Arizona Cardinals. He's been working with Fitz; has Arizona connections, etc.

I hope he is wrong for once lol

I would have no problem with bringing Santonio in. Torrey, Tandon and other young WRs on this roster could learn a lot from him and Boldin. Of course, however, it comes down to financing it right.

This is a mystery to me. How much do the Jets want him back? I know they SHOULD want him back a whole lot more than Braylon and others (whatever we do, let's not sign Braylon), but the way it is being reported, he isn't as big a priority to them as Ngata and Yanda are to us. I would imagine he would be first on the Jets list of FAs who need to be brought back, but there seem to be conflicting reports/opinions about it.

Santonio seems like the most logical choice. He's a fast, reliable receiver who has consistently been super-clutch in the playoffs...yeah.. remember that catch?

Afc championship 08 dropped TD Mason. Whatever dude. He's good yea, but good ain't good enough to win it. And we need to win Now. It's just age at this point. We need younger bigger faster stronger
Oh bull. EVERY receiver drops passes, no one is immune to it. It happens, the fact that you're claiming he's "not good enough to win it" is disrespectful to him.

Boldin disappeared alot later on in the season, is he "not good enough to win it" either?

Dude mason had 1 catch in 2 playoff games last year, if he was "good enough" he would have more production than 1 catch in 2 games. Sorry. It needed to happen.

Boldin disappeared being double covered, mason coulodnt get open in single coverage late last season.

Seriously? When you're ready to see a person's career and play ability past TWO, yes TWO, games, I'll take what you have to say more seriously. News flash, Mason's flourished in Baltimore when he's damn near be the ONLY good receiver, and constantly saw double coverage. Did he disappear? No, he still put up 1000+ yard seasons and kept Baltimore's passing game respectable. Am I say he's better than Boldin? No, but I'm saying "well he was doubled" is a weak, cheap cop out.

There's a reason Baltimore begged Mason to not retire last year. It's certainly not because "he can't cut it".

do i or the team give a damn about what he did 10 years ago no, the fact is he is old as hell and it needed to be done, 4 and a half mil and we could have thrown marcus smith or justin harper out there and they COULDNT have done worse then mason in the playoffs.lol....

it isnt about the past stop thinking it is, masons past 1000 yards season wont help us this year

Yeah, those wide open passes they dropped were beautiful. Certainly more so than the contests catches that Mason would make  News flash. Those two catches you talk about in the playoffs Mason had... are more than Smith and Harper have in their careers combined. Oh right, they can't actually earn a spot on the receiving team in the first place, at least Smith is a good special team player.

There's absolutely no way anyone can be this absurd.

What a difference a year makes. Last year we're begging Mason to come back saying we need him, this year we cut him.

I know it's business 'n' all, but c'mon man.

Mason is old? What's your point?

Ray is old. Ed is old. Peyton Manning is old. Tom Brady is old. James Farrior is old. Terrell Owens is old. Charles Woodson is old. Darren Sharper is old. Hines Ward is old. Reggie Wayne is old. LaDainian Tomlinson is old. So what? Age is only a number, some players age much better than others. Mason is one of them.
