MERGED: General Reactions to the Reported Cuts

We all saw this coming, for the most part. But with Mase & Heap I thought they would be restructured. They're both still good players, and especially Heap needs to be back, he's still one of the top 10 TE's in the game. And to be honest Dickson hasn't shown he can be a good starting TE yet.

of course he hasn´t. he didn´t get the opportunity. we will be fine with dickson and pitta. our team needs to get younger!!!

i love mason and heap bit we need to get our young guys on the filed!!! look what all those young guns did in the league in the last few years!!!

never the less i have the feeling that at least one of the guys will be back with the team.

i don´t think that joe progresses fast if he keeps throwing those out route passes to mason. if he needs to get more variable it´s a good thing.

[bEd Dickson is the better receiving tight end[/b], but I'm not sure how I feel about him blocking anyone. Hopefully we bring Heap back for more of a 1st and 2nd down role. Not to mention losing Mason and Heap would be Flacco losing probably 60% plus of his total completions since he got here. Thats a pretty big change.

Better than who? Pitta?

Careful what you say....odds are they'll both be back (Mason and Heap) and be starters once again.
[/quote]
I agree with this statement both will resign for less because of the age factor, and I believe they love playing here and this is the year they'll get their ring. And retire as Ravens.

I slept on it. I am still upset by it.

Mason could be back at lesser money. Heap will definitely get some offers from other teams, so I think it is a dangerous move to put him out there unprotected like this.

For those who want to say they aren't worth the money, perhaps. One of the things I have always loved about the Ravens' organization though was the way they treat people. Even those that have to go. This doesn't fall into that respect.

We all knew McGahee was on borrowed time and I can see cutting Gregg. I am sorry to see them both go.

But Mason and Heap?! C'mon man!

Another thing about this is, the quickness of these moves make me feel as though Ozzie is confident that they will resign at a lower value.

The wizard of Oz has had time to think this out, they'll resign and retire a Raven next year.

I agree with the first statement but totally disagree with the last. I think this was actually a classy move to let them know right away (well before they had to) so the players know where they stand. This gives them time to figure out if they want to move on, re-sign, or retire. Last minute cuts are the worst.

Mason will be back, so shocked at this move. He is the heart of our offense, our leader on that side of the ball. Like Jim leonhard said " mase is a *bleeping* warrior"

I'm all for letting our young players get more playing time also.. Such as Cody, Kruger, Dickson... However this is not a normal offseason in which some of these players have gotten extra reps needed to step into bigger roles... Both Pitta and Dickson will be good TEs but neither showed could blocking ability in the 3 games Heap missed last year... As for young WRs getting a chance because of Mason gone well, they still need to work on NFL routes, timing etc...

Part of me says that Mase and Heap will be back, but the other part of me says they're done. If its the end for them, then I want to say 'goodbye' and 'thank you for the entertainment you all brought to us and playing your guts out'. These 4 players all did wonders for us, but 3 of them are getting too old, and one of them (McGahee) is asking too much money for a backup player. If thats it for these guys, maybe we have money to sign back Gaither/Yanda/Wilson, which would float my boat. Also, the young guns need to step up to the plate!

I like Dickson and Pitta a lot, but as jdynamite said, Dickson never really showed he was near being a complete TE in the 3 games Heap missed and Pitta was banged up for the latter half of the season. Of these 4 to be released vets, Heap is the only one I think we should definitely try to bring back, maybe a 2 year deal or something. We all love Mase and it we bring him back that's fine, at the same time if we don't it definitely opens up our youth movement at WR which is what I really wanna see. Gregg has been great for us but is definitely declining, I think McKinney and Cody will be more than able to hold down the NT spot. We all knew McGahee was gone.

Just got back from vacation...in a word, Wow. :o

This, I think, is just an opening salvo. I trust this FO and I think some wonderful things will unfold in the coming weeks. Gonna just wait and see how this all pans out.

Although they will cut Mason he more than likely will re-sign within a week for a lower cap number... These cuts will save 18 million dollars overall....

But this reminds me during the season when we cut Trevor Pryce expecting to resign him in a week and the Jets swooped in and signed him first....

I only that we don't lose all of unrestricted players as well as the ones we are cutting because that would really ruin the depth of this time... OL, CB depth

We need 2 number 1 receivers . Thex competition is fierce. No more 40 year old big catch dropping wide outs. Dickson must step up blocking and route running

Gregg made 2 plays all year, 1 of which was tackle for a lost vs KC. Cody must collapse pockets and shut down the run

Not really. As long as Yanda is re-signed, and RT is solidified, the team should have no excuse to not field a better offense than they did last season.

I really hope you're not slandering Mason with this. The dude's made more clutch catches than anyone. If a man who caught a touchdown pass with one arm incapacitated didn't earn your respect, I don't know what will.

Afc championship 08 dropped TD Mason. Whatever dude. He's good yea, but good ain't good enough to win it. And we need to win Now. It's just age at this point. We need younger bigger faster stronger

There's no disrespect I love Mason, but we need a receiver that can beat #1 corners. We need that guy that can explode yac. Mason does not require double coverage or safety over the top, that's what we need.

I stand corrected.

Mason is one of the most underrated players in here. He carried the passing offense with literally one arm, and with a rookie quarterback to boot, and had one of his best seasons. Don't let one drop cover up his past achievements.

You can also argue that the one drop he had at the 2008 AFC championship was a past mistake. One moment doesn't define a player.

What do you want me to say? Your obviously not getting it. All the corners are faster them Mason. Teams play mason expecting that quick out route that padded his stats the last 4 years. We need to get better at his position period. Takes nothing away from what he has done. Mason makes mediocre corners look like Revis at this point. Theres some 50 year olds with good hands. Chris Carter still hot hands. Getting open and beating coverage is the key.
