Ravens Over Salary Cap?

46 posts in this topic

If this news is true things are even worse than we all thought. At first reports were the Ravens were 5 million under the cap...I just saw on NFL football today the Ravens are 1.8 million OVER the cap!!!

Has anyone else seen or heard this? If true this makes it real hard to get much done in free agency, we aren't going to be big spenders and somehow we have to resign some of our guys.

Maybe they meant thats how much we were over last year..but with contracts coming off we will be under for this year? Maybe...man ESPN sucks

Thats the first mention I have heard of the Ravens being over the cap, do you have a link? I'm not sure how that could be true unless it is factoring in the Franchise Tag, RFA tenders, and projected rookie salaries.

Uhh, considering this is the only report of us being over the cap, I'm gonna say that it's innacurate. Every other report says we're roughly 2-5 mil under.

I mentioned this in the free agency thread in the other teams forum.mod 3 brought up a good point.they might be counting ngata "tag" which means we need to sign ASAP to free up space

This pretty much sums it up -

$101.3M currently, but that's not counting almost $10M in RFA tenders and Ngatas $12M or so FT.

But please remember this:

"Teams will have roughly $3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay available to fund veteran player salaries. Teams could also “borrow” $3 million from a future salary cap that could be paid back.

The salary cap is set to be $120.375 million in 2011. Combining the two exemptions for 2011, the number really rises to $126.885. An extra $6.5 million won’t save guys that truly deserve to get cut, but it will make life easier for teams near the cap limit."

So we do have a little bit more room. Plus look for us to restructure some contracts (Willis if we wants to and maybe Foxworth).

I'm thinking since they said we were over the cap for 2011 that they haven't taken into the account the contracts that have come off the books from last year.

We have a great front office, so hopefully those guys can work this thing out

If we are over, I am shocked too! I believed we were about 5.5 MM under.... I concur with you about ESPN. I hate them just a tad less than I hate the Steelers!

I agree with you, friend - if anyone can work this out, it's Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens front office.

SALARY CAP STATEMENT FROM EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT/GENERAL MANAGER OZZIE NEWSOME:

"We are excited to be back in the business of football and looking forward to having our players back.

"With this agreement comes a new salary cap, unlike last season when there was no cap. We will be making a number of roster moves in the next 48 hours that will free up salary cap space. This will give us the ability to make offers to our players we want to re-sign, plus put us in a position to sign free agents from other teams."

i think the moves being made speak for themselves, the Ravens are definitely freeing up some salary cap space..getting rid of some vets...interested to see what new blood comes to the team, what players get resigned, etc

So when we cut 4 players we cleared 18.6 in cap space.

We were already 5.3 under the cap, so is the 18.6 including the previous 5.3 or was it just those 4 players?

You add the 5.3 to the 18.6. Then subtract Yanda's salary out of that (salary per year).

That's not what I'm asking, did the 18.6 include the 5.3 or was the 18.6 just the 4 cut players.

The 18.6 was how much was cut from the 4 players...

So if you want the total cap room you add the 5.3 and 18.6. Then subtract Yanda's contract.

See, supposedly cutting those four guys freed up an additional $18.6M, so we would add the $18.6M on top of the $5.3M, giving us $23.9M in cap room. Then subtract Yanda's contract, we'd be at around $17M.

HOWEVER...

I really question the reports that the released players freed up $18.6M. It sounds like they simply added up their combined salaries, rather than consider the true cap savings. For example, Willis was due to make over $6M. But I recall reading somewhere that releasing Willis would only save us something like $2.5M, because he was still under contract. Same with Heap. Mason on the other hand, this was an optional year, and we didnt choose to excersize that option.</div>

That article says we're under cap by 5mil. I watch ESPN, and the NFL network, but I never listen to those guys half of what they say is opinion based. So they're not always right they're humans just like all of us.

That was before we cut Mason, Heap, McGahee, and Gregg.

My hopes are feeling bleak today... I felt good about trying to get him last night, but today I don't know. I want him pretty bad, he would be awesome here, but meh I dunno if its really possible.

It isn't. The new cap killed any chance of that happening
