H-Back Offense?

17 posts in this topic

If McClain leaves via Free Agency how would you guys like us moving pitta to Hback and use him like Chris COoley. Pitta has wonderful hands and will be a threat out of the backfield. Could anyone see it happening? My Uncle suggested it when we were talking about our FA situation. We both dont predict us getting LeRon back.

I don't see it happening. Dickson and Pitta are the heirs to Heap's spot when he hangs them up. I doubt they would jeopardize the progression of Pitta by making him learn a new position. Dickson and Pitta are great young talents and could be an excellent tandem for us, I don't see the FO throwing a monkey wrench into that plan.

We have Parmele, Steele, Allen, and Rice at RB. If McClain walks we still have Jason McKie at FB, or we might go out in FA and pick up a pure blocking FB like Vickers. They're not going to mess with the TE depth chart when there are more viable options already available.

Not having LeRon severely limited our playbook options, and while we can just make more plays, I doubt the FO wants to go through with that and would rather sign a decent FB to fill the void

I think it could definitely happen to an extent, but I would imagine it wouldnt be a fulltime thing. We saw a little bit of it last year when McClain was injured, and it provides another dimension to the offense. I dont think it would hinder the progression of Pitta as a TE, in fact I see it the other way around. If he can be used in different formations and roles on the Offense it just makes him a more valuable commodity. Now, I dont think he should be used every down as an H-back, and realistically I highly doubt Cam will move away from the FB entirely.

That's putting more faith into Cam and a raw player than I'd be willing to invest.Besides, McClain's not really that much of a loss. A FB is a FB is a FB...

What makes McClain so talented is his skill with the ball. His blocking is also very very good, but there are a couple very very good blockers in free agency. If we used McClain more or put a fullback in front of him to run then I think we would use him better. But using McClain for FB dives isn't using him correctly. I don't think the Ravens want to go out of their way to use a FB to his full potential if it means taking the ball away from other playmakers.

Agreed.

But wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens show interest in Henry Hynoski the Undrafted FA FB from the Univ of Pitt.

Good point For the Ravens to be continuely on the up swing we need to tweek up the FB position by getting another FB. No need to mess with the TE's That's our future heap and gonzales in the mix.

You know it's the time for our offense to wear down the apponents Defense like they tried on the ravens for years. That fomular will keep our defense fresh and that makes the opponents feel the pressure all game.

The thing that makes a FB effective is when he can slip the block and catch a pass. The position is also useful for 3rd or 4th down situations on the draw play or offtackle to catch the opponent off guard. Flacco likes to pound it in there on the sneak, though. I didn't like that McClain lost production last year in the yards per carry stat. His big mouth didn't help either, nor did his RB campaign. Let's move on. Just go with what we have for now. We can always pick up someone decent after the cuts are made later. :34853_brickwall:

Good point because i heard Cam Cameron specifically mention using H-backs last year when he talked about the 2nd TE they took in the draft...Pitta. I just didn't think it would ever happen with McClain in the mix, but now that McClain is likely gone this is definitely a possibility.

problem with that is McClain is worthless as a recieving back (worthless might be generous). Besides, with Rice and three good looking TE, we already have a ton of alternatives. We just need to get them involved. I wanted to see a lot more two TE formations last year; hopefully you know who will pull his head out of his rear and do it this year.

As long as we have a guy back there who can block for Rice when his number is called, I don't care who our FB is.,,,,,,,,,,,,
