Important Question

9 posts in this topic

Recently, moderators, I used "what the heck" in a post of mine. When I was done posting it, it was immediately changed to "what the heck." I feel like this takes away from the idea of freedom of speech. It seems to everyone who reads it that I ment to say "what the heck" and that's not right.

I understand, obviously, that "what the heck" could be portrayed as inappropriate. However, as long as I did not actually post the f word, I see nothing wrong with "what the heck."

Again, I believe "what the heck" takes away from freedom of speech. Just for future preferences (for anyone), if someone uses "what the heck" could you please let it go?

Thank you.

It's not us, it's the filter in our software that automatically changes it. We Mods don't have easy access to change and adjust the filter, as that's all done by the Administrators. We're in the middle of a pending board upgrade so any changes to the filter would likely be done after the upgrade is completed.

Also, in reference to "freedom of speech," while we respect the freedoms we're afforded as individuals, the Bill of Rights technically doesn't apply here since this forum is privately-owned territory. We allow differing opinions and general, common-sense freedoms, but anything in violation of the rules in the Code of Conduct isn't protected by the Constitution. We also don't make the rules, we just enforce them.

Automatically changes W.T.F. too, without adding the periods that is.

That phrase is prohibited by the filter since everyone knows what it stands for. It's nearly as bad as saying the actual profanity itself and constitutes veiled profanity, which is a CoC offense. (No, you won't get hit on your warning level for that post, given the context of our discussion).

what the heck is wrong with your post? :P

It does the same thing with s-t-f-u, changing it to Please be quiet.

Hard to write words like boast-ful, they come out boaPlease be quiet.l...

In reference to the "free speech" issue, I defer to Franny - he'll write it about as eloquently as anyone.

I know it seems dumb, especially since a lot of us (not all) are old enough here for that language in the real world, but bear in mind that this is a family site and there's plenty of kids who are members. That's in addition to people who log in from work (such as myself). Even though that's considered mild language, it just looks bad when you've got phrases like that on the screen and there's parents or bosses around.

Franny, I for one am very glad for the feature. There are many important and even vital reasons why this feature has to be used, as Franchise laid out for you all. I let my anger go yesterday evening and said something I'm not proud of in the lockout thread when players wouldn't vote, but thankfully, it was automatically changed. It wasn't the word itself, but it was the abbreviation.

Part of what needs to be realized we have had kids as young as 10 and I think our oldest poster is in her 80's so these forums are PG. It was decided that in 2007 when the boards were opened by the Ravens Media Team. While I realize there are many middle schoolers that know as much or more profanity then adults--it does not add to the conversation-- legally they are minors and some of the filtered words can be taken several ways. If a mod changes a post you will usually see <profanity deleted> or <personal attack deleted>,
