Training Camp Battles

63 posts in this topic

Since the lockout is nearing it's end.
And players are supposedly reporting to their team facilities next week.. Which training camp battles are you going to keep a close eye on?

Mines are..

Anquan Boldin/Derrick Mason v. Jimmy Smith
Torrey Smith/David Reed v. Lardarius Webb

I also can't wait to see how Anthony Allen does.. If McClain or McGahee or maybe even both doesn't come back, I hope Rice and Allen can become a 1-2 punch that lights fear in the hearts of D-Coordinators.

I was going to say that I really can't wait to see the new Smith duo in action.

I also want to see how Flacco and T. Smith have gelled since the Towson practice.

I'm excited for the battle for RT, and for LE.
Will Reid start? Will Gaither even be resigned? What about Cousins or Harewood?
Will Redding keep his starting job? Or will Kruger take the next step? Wll Arthur Jones seize the job under the radar? Who knows?

I'm also waiting to see how Kindle does at LOLB fighting for a job with JJ.

The battle for spots on the cornerback and wide reciever depth charts, Arthur Jones' development this offseason, and the abilities of Jah Ried.

Also how well Foxworth holds up with the knee.

Since we havent seen them yet, there will be a lot to look at in a very short period of time.

How about Dickson v. Heap. I know Dickson won't replace Heap as a full time starter, but maybe compete for more PT. I would throw Pitta in there as well but based off the PT between him and Dickson last year, I feel Dickson has a better opportunity.

WR: Mason vs T.Smith vs Tandon Doss. I say throw our rookies out there and see what they can do and see if they can earn a starting spot.

TE: Dickson vs Pitta: I know that they will also be competing with Heap for more playing time but we need to find out if one of these two is the future at TE after Heap.

OL: We all know how this will go, Will Yanda be back, will Gaither be back and if so does he start at LT with Oher back at RT? If Gaither re-signs elsewhere, will we sign a Veteran RT while Reid develops?

Center: I put this separate. Will we bring in someone like Kris O'Dowd or Jake Kirkpatrick who went Undrafted and will they show something in Camp that they can be groomed behind Birk? Will we bring in any Center in general, or will Ozzie wait to see about Michael Brewster in the 2012 Draft?

DL: With rumors swirling of a Kelly Gregg release, will Mt. Cody be ready to be a full time NT? Will Redding continue to hold down the LE spot or will someone like Arthur Jones show he can be our future LE?

OLB: Will we sign a Veteran OLB to help surplant JJ on 3rd down's or will that be Kindle if he is ready for his first true rookie season.

CB: Foxworth vs Jimmy Smith. Will Foxworth be back 100% healthy, or will he not and have to start the year on the PUP list, meaning Smith would be jumping into things as our #1 CB. Will we re-sign Carr, Wilson or neither? Will we go after Aso?

SS: Landry is walking, because someone will over pay him while Ozzie will not. Is Zibby the future at SS? Do we bring in someone like Donte Whitner to be our new SS, or do we add depth while Zibby starts and we bring in more competition for him next year with either Mark Barron or Ray Ray Armstrong?

James Hardy vs Justin Harper. A battle to decide ultimately who gets the roster spot.

Zibby vs Nakamura (only if Landry walks) to decide who starts next to Reed.

Allen vs Steele vs Parmele for the RB backup job.

These are the ones I am looking forward to as well, although I think Marcus Smith can be thrown into the WR battle as well.

Also I want to see what happens with the ILB battle between Ellerbe and McClain.

True on both counts, although I think the ILB battle is going to be less fierce because of how highly McClain seems to be rated by the coaches.

Assuming Gaither is really out and Yanda is re-signed to play guard, the RT battle will be big. Jah Reid, Ramon Harewood, and whoever else is involved will have to have a big season.

David Reed vs. Torrey Smith. Wouldn't be surprised if Reed turned some heads this year. Mike Duffy especially really likes him. The ravens need one of the two to step up this year, if our offense is going to take the next step.

Webb vs. Jimmy Smith vs. Chris Carr. I don't think it would be out of the question for Webb to win the position. Two years away from surgery and when he played in his rookie year he played extremely well. Last year he was hesitant and inconsistent, but I could see him making strides. If Jimmy Smith wins the position and plays up to his potential, I think that will be the best for the Ravens. Considering that Smith could be our best cb and that is exactly what this team needs. And worst comes to worst, we got consistent Carr who is very good.

Curtis Steele vs. Anthony Allen vs. someone else. I don't really know who will win this. Anthony Allen seems like an enormous back and if we lose McClain, then having a fullback in front of Allen could bring back that short yardage game back.

First I want to enjoy free agency and see what the Ravens(and other teams) do.

But I'm interested in seeing how Justin Harper has progressed over the last year. How Harper, David Reed, Torrey Smith, and Tandon Doss all end up working out.

And after that, basically... all the linebackers competing to play next to Ray Lewis, and the defensive ends competing to play on the opposite side of Terrell Suggs.

Ramone Harewood... hopefully you're as talented as the Ravens thought you could be, because I don't think Gaither has gotten over her injury. He's been really quiet this entire summer.

On a typical down, the DE opposite Suggs will usually be Redding. I'm hoping Kruger and Jones can push him this season though. In situations where J.J. puts his hand in the dirt, Kindle is the only one I see challenging him for snaps(unless the team signs a pass rusher).

Ramon has been quite because he's been putting in work alongside Cousins with Orlando Brown.

Kindle only played DE one year, he played OLB in a 4-3 the other years so it's not as big a switch for him.

Where and when does training camp start??
Where: Owings Mills, not open to the public.

When: Probably about a week after the CBA is ratified by both sides.

I'll sure miss Westminster Training camp! The workouts at the stadium are cool but it WILL NEVER have the behind the scenes feel like McDaniel... Unless they let fans on the field. LOL. I sure hope it comes back to Westminster next year but who knows at this point!

Kindle did lose hearing out of one of his ears, and I still don't know how his balance is going to be after an injury like that. I'm excited for his return too, but remain cautiously optimistic.

Art Jones. I'm really stoked to see what this guy can do. I think he'll take over the starting spot from Redding at some point this year.

Biggest battle I see is Foxworth, Webb, Jimmy Smith and possibly Josh Wilson all competing for the two starting CB jobs.
