The Raven

Pernell McPhee

I think Pernell will eventually be a good player for us, but not this season. He may be able to contribute as a runstopper, but we're already stacked with players of the role. Some have discussed the possibility of having him drop weight to become an OLB. Personaly, I want to see him bulk up a little to about 290.

His stregnth is run stopping, but I feel he's an underrated pass rusher. There's very little film to watch on him, but he's relentless and very physical. In junior college, he recorded 30 sacks. However, when he moved up to Miss State, his sacks dropped down to 5 in his junior year. Many attribute that to the stronger competition, which no doubt has an effect, but I think it may have something to do with his weight gain. In the article I'm listing below, it says he blew up from 218, to 278 rather quickly. He probably gained that weight weight faster than his body could adapt, which resulted in a severe reduction in speed. with NFL trainers, I feel that speed will be regained though. Jusr my theory on that matter.

What are your thoughts on McPhee?

I'd like to know why we only have one pass rusher on the team after all these years. The Steelers have a backup linebacker who posted more sacks than JJ.

I though he was one of the more intriguing prospects, because the size is there, and if he has used this lockout to continue to get NFL ready, and then site behind Ngata and Redding than he may just be alright, but it relies SEVERELY upon him. I think he could turn into whatever he wants to be.

Honestly, from looking at some games of him, I think he's better suited for OLB rather than DE. If he loses some weight, he could be great there

Based on what Ozzie said after he was drafted(link), it seems the organization is going to have him bulk up.

If that does indeed happen, let's hope he handles the transition better than Kruger has so far.

I still don't understand how McPhee fits on our defense. Its one thing to draft a 43 player like Paul Kruger, but a guy like McPhee isn't built to play any position on our D. He's too short to be a DE and too heavy to play a LB. I like the guy, but i don't think he will be used.

He's 6'3. That's hardly too short. Suggs is the same height... And he plays like a DE. In general though, I believe height is over-rated. I think shorter DE's around 6'0 have an advantage, as they have a lower pad level and have more leverage on these monster tackles. Dumervil is 5'10 and Harrison is only 6'0. They both play like DE's and despite Harrison's stupidity, are both great players. I think Pernell will get up to about 285-290 and play LE, and slide inside to the 3 on passing downs.

No he doesn't. Justin Smith in San Fran is one of the best 3-4 DE's and he plays at about 280-285. Both of the steeler ends are about the same size as well.

I was going to compare him to Cory Reddings weight at 290, and I was never saying he couldnt be a DE

yeah he is a 6'3 43 de. unless he is a teen n still growing he isn't going to magically gain 2 inches, he is not a big interior lineman that can take up blocks, he is an extremely overweight pass rushing olb on a 34

lol what does 2 more inches mean?

go up a few posts, some of the better De in the league are 6ft, 280..

How in the world can a 6ft 3 man not do what a 6 ft 4 man can do..

Cory Redding is 6' 4" , you really think 1 inch means anything at all haha, and hes already at a good weight, give him a year in the nfl hell put on another 10 pounds of muscle, and be playing at 290,

6' 3" 290 is not bad for a 34 DE...

KG isnt a good lineman because he is only 6ft right

I don't care who we have to cut to make room, but we definitely need a pass rush this year.
As for McPhee, he will join the rest of the backups, sweating the final cut, hoping to make the practice squad, or riding the metal bronco all year.

McPhee is compact, but he's got some long arms, which should help him in the trenches once he gets even stronger.

What does too short have to do with if he learns the defensive scheme plays in position and hard with pursuit to the ball.... Over the years we have taken plenty of players not fit for other teams and transformed them into players... ( A.Thomas.. Anthony Weaver various other D.Lineman and linebackers...

Hopefully he can be coached up and transition more smoothly than Kruger has so far

I think he it will be alot easier for him than Kruger, seeing as he is close to playing weight already and doesnt have to add 30 pounds.

My guess is that he will stay at DE. Personally I don't mind either way, but only time will tell which he is better at.

Right now he's basically insurance in case Cory goes down, but where he goes from there I think it's hard to say. Could he make the switch on the DL and flourish like Adalius? Or will he struggle like Kruger? At the very least we do know that we've got run-stopping depth at the DE position behind Cory. Can we also take a second to point out that Cory Redding was one hell of a great off-season acquisition by Ozzie and Eric? We lost Trevor to the Jets from out of nowhere and then suddenly we plug in this guy Cory and he really played like a Raven the rest of the year. Hats off to the FO on that move.
