2011 Salary Cap At $120 Million

60 posts in this topic

You would think they would hvae an uncapped year again before reducing the cap 10million cause thats going to affect some teams massively, they would kinda need to know its coming ie next season rather than just being thrown a curve ball and being told to deal with that out of the blue...

Yeah $120 Million is actually too little and they should have had it at $130 Million OR should have went uncapped this season with the warning of the cap being $120 Million next year and to pretty much tell teams to spend at the risk of being over next year.

If it makes anyone feel better pittsburgs something like 10 million over the cap.
That is awesome! Now they really do have to cut Harrison!

Does anyone know how far over the Jets are?

Jets are also immensely over. In the AFC the Ravens, Colts and Pats look to not be brutalized by

The only competitor with cap space is Philly, which might equate to nnamdi but apparently there will be exceptions so the cap "Feels" more like 130. I don't know what that means, but that gives us some wiggle.

Clearly this is about to hit the fan.

According to ESPN (without franchise tag)

Arizona $83 million
Atlanta $102.1 million
Baltimore $101.3 million
Buffalo $96.4 million
Carolina $73 million
Chicago $104.9 million

Being a soccer fan, I have a little bit of knowledge on how the MLS salary cap works, and the highlighted tidbit makes me think that they might go the MLS route? I'm not sure. But for those that aren't knowledgeable on the inner workings of Major League Soccer (LOL), MLS has cap exclusions where each team is allotted to spend unlimited money on several high price tag players, and those players' salaries don't affect the overall cap of the team. It allows for teams to sign the impact player without hurting the rest of the team. That's how a team like LA Galaxy can afford Landon Donovan and David Beckham while still being able to have cap space to fill the rest of the roster. This probably isn't the case for the NFLCap, but it's just a thought on one of the routes they might possibly be taking with the new CBA.

We're really sitting around $100 million against the cap. Factor in the release of McGahee and Kelly Gregg and now it's around $90 mill against the cap. Ngata being signed long term will bring another $5-6 mill off the cap. If we trade Foxworth saves another $4 mill in efforts to sign Nnamdi.

$120 isn't the definitive cap. It's just a number a reporter is guestimating at. And I expect a transition signing that would allow any team to sign x amount of veterans at a reduced salary against the cap e.g., Signing a Vet for $3 million but only impacting the cap by around vet minimum $800K.

Just read this about the Salary Cap. Apparently there is some Flexibility in terms of spending, so I'm taking this as a good sign that we may have more room to work with.
Teams will have roughly $3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay available to fund veteran player salaries. Teams could also “borrow” $3 million from a future salary cap that could be paid back.

The salary cap is set to be $120.375 million in 2011. Combining the two exemptions for 2011, the number really rises to $126.885.
That is a little unnerving, considering the talent they have on D, and the offensive weapon's they have, all they need is a QB.

Ok, so I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm gonna try and break this cap issue down a little bit. I'm just using logic and reported numbers from different websites, so don't burn me at the stake if I'm off a digit or 5...

Unfortunately writing in big bold letters doesnt make your math correct. We have little to no Cap Space remaining, probably enough to sign 2-3 small pieces but no big names.

The 18.6M number isn't correct. That is their base salaries for this season, but they had some dead money attached to their cap figures. Cutting them only cleared about 14M. Yanda's contract is 6.4M per year, and it was slightly frontloaded meaning it will be closer to 7M not 4M. Signing Ngata long term will help, but he is stil going to make at least 10M a year. Even if it is backloaded there is no way it gets down to 5-7M range you suggested. Finally cutting Foxworth would only save us 1.4M in cap space this year. At best we might have 10-12M to work with.

If that's true, I stand corrected on Yanda. I thought I saw his contract paid more out over the first 3 years. That would definitely help, but it still puts us in a tough spot to bring in anyone pricy.

So its been a bit quiet so far for us and thats all down to being tight for cash, so i thought what if the cap was the extra 10mil that it was rumoured to be at times during the lockout. what would we have done differently?

i think we would have paid josh wilson and been in a great situation at cb, nmandi was never an option i dont think... Mase wouldnt have been released and help teach are young recievers for one season, but i still think mcgahee heap and gregg would have been.

I think mcclain would go and leach/vickers will be brought in even with the cap as it stands, i dont think the FO see mcclain as a back up back, weve got some untested talent in that position.

And finally i think they would have signed a vet right tackle (they still might) to plug a gap until jah reid fills in.

and if it was feasible a trade/fa signing of a cut OLB..

it'd be even worse because more teams would've had money to put out on big free agents, we still would've been doing the same thing
