Google+

7 posts in this topic

So, Google's going in late in the social networking game and are coming up with a piece of their own. All reviews I've seen so far have been nothing short of positive. I've been sick of Facebook and its privacy isssues and bugs. I've even resorted to deleting my account, a process much more complicated than it should be.

Any thoughts about the so called "next big thing"?

I swear by Google+ and am an avid user, but I must warn of these things if you try it out:

1) You can't approach it with the same mindset as Facebook and Twitter because it takes elements of both and combines them in a way that works surprisingly well.
2) It's not a social network in the traditional sense so much as it's a communication hub that integrates several Google services into one.
3) It's still in a limited field test and they're actively making changes on a regular basis, so the current experience will not match the final experience that users will see when it's rolled out to the public.

For all of the praise heaped upon the service, there's definitely some warranted criticism, but nothing that can't be fixed. It also helps that Google is active in accepting feedback and is admitting the mistakes they've made. However, I like that the service puts the emphasis on you and how you choose to share, and there's so much flexibility in how you can share that it's amazing that Facebook and Twitter don't embrace this concept of openness.

I don't think Google+ is a Facebook-killer or Twitter-killer, but it doesn't have to be. I think all of these services will have their own niche, and I think they're all different enough to operate in their own space.

That said, once Google+ is polished, I think it'll catch on like wildfire. The biggest complaint I've heard is that it seems too much like Facebook, but that's only on the surface. Once you get over the learning curve, it's much, much different.

I love it. I can see myself using this for a long time just like I used FB. I'm more interested in this than I am Twitter.

Facebook would not be bad at all if not for the various security issues/privacy breaches on there. Hopefully Google can provide more security to make people feel a bit more comfortable. Of course, all of it comes down to the user and how he/she reps himself/herself on there and how much info they give out, but Facebook must share the blame as well for giving it out willingly.

All I know is that the Google+ hype has helped me make some money today. Up today $68.68. 12.98%. It's about time, it needed to start growing again.

Well that and a strong 2Q.
