Harbaugh names rookie QB starter for season opener

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced today that rookie quarterback Joe Flacco will start Sunday in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium.

Flacco, the team's No. 1 pick in this year's draft, gets the nod over veteran Kyle Boller, out with an injured shoulder, and Troy Smith, the second-year pro who has battled a tonsil infection the last week.

The 18th overall selection from Delaware started the final two preseason games for the Ravens and appeared to get more comfortable with each snap.

I am so excited! The way Flacco looked against the Falcons with our O-line being dominate....we should destroy the Bengles. Everyone pray for an outstanding line Sunday! See ya'll at the game.

we know that our starting o line can handle the falcons, so that means they can also handle the bengals... all flacco needs to do is hand the ball off and not turn it over. that is if our corners can handle 0cho. oh. no! and houshmanzadeh ( remember we wont have fabian or martin)

If we have chris mcalister and rolle we should do fine, I'm not to sure mcalister will be ready by then though. Just wonderin' who's going to start if ed reed can't play?

Congrats to flacco, I just hope the oline will hold up.

Joe Flacco hooks up with Yamon Figurs on a go route 1st play off the game for a TD :D getting the tivo ready. I'm excited for Flacco plus I'm a lil relieved that since has to start at least it's going to be against Cinci's defense.

I dunno about this, but there are not any other options... I will be praying his confidence doesn't get shattered like another former #1 pick we all know. Many blessings to Joe in his first NFL start; you earned it...

As one of the biggest Boller supporter around, even I'm excited about this. I think Flacco started playing very well after he got the "rookie jitters" out of the way, and I look forward to seeing what he can do in a real game.

You all know for a fact that I'm smiling ear-to-ear right now. :)

And seeing as how I'm going to the game this Sunday (with good seats, at that!), I'm even more pumped for the opener!

Have you bought your #5 jersey yet? :P

I am still holding off on that, for now...

Okay.
This is where the rubber meets the road.
This is where all the Boller/ Smith / Flacco debating ends.

It is regular season. Lets root for the RAVENS and not this guy or that guy.

Flacco, good luck to ya. We believe in you, now go make Baltimore proud.

Actually, I already own a black Flacco jersey, and I'm getting a purple one later this week...lol.

My logic is, even if Flacco were to fail (which I dearly hope ISN'T the case), at least I'd be able to say that my favorite NFL team drafted a player from my school in the first round, which isn't exactly something that happens every day. So I just had to get his jersey... ;)

It's pretty cool to see how excited the people on here are about Flacco. I know when we drafted Flacco, a lot of people on the forum were not excited about this pick.

It's cool that Flacco is starting. It adds to the optimism of this year.

One word best describes this for Flacco: Destiny.
Everything work just the right way for him to start week 1. Now its up to him

This has been the plan of Harbaugh and Cam since before the 3rd pre-season game. Football is just like Politics in a way,They will lie and make things look like something, but the real truth is somethikng else. they wanted to go with Flacco, so all of a sudden Boller gets a shoulder injury, anmd Smith is out with a tonsil infection ( of all things ) . Im excited, and I think Flacco will become the Ravens Franshise QB ( I Pray anyways ) He will have His rookie mistakes, He may have a game or two that we all wish to forget, but in the end He will become a guy like Peyton manning is to the Colts, or Brady is to the Pats, Rothisberger is to the Squeelers. GET YA POPCORN READY RAVENS FANS, This is going to be exciting for years to come, Imingine this.. our defense keeps its top 5 status for another 10 years, now all of a sudden we have a awesome QB in Flacco and Cam brings us a top 5 or at at least a middle of the pack offense.. We are now a every year playoff team!!

Best of luck to him. He wouldn't be in this position unless the stars aligned the way they did. I hope he reacts better than Boller when he was starting as a rookie. I hope we don't go through that situation again.

the problem is if flacco doesn't do good, by the third game Baltimore's fair-weather population will start booing him, like they still do to boller

its funny to see all the doomsday predictions on the sun's forums... maybe thats why Baltimore's fan-base was ranked 17th

It's the best decision to make. Why waste time with Troy Smith when Flacco is the obvious future, and Troy isn't any better then Flacco? If Boller was healthy I could see starting him over Flacco because of the exprience factor, but it wouldn't bother me if Flacco started. It would bother me starting Troy over Flacco because he is just obviously not NFL qb material and isn't any better then Flacco if he's even as good as Flacco. Did I use the name Flacco enough?

I wouldn't normally agree with a statement like that, but in this situation, I think you might be right.

Not to sound selfish, but it's almost like the stars aligned perfectly for me:

My school goes to the FCS title game only to lose, just as my favorite NFL team happens to be struggling. Draft day rolls around, and my school's QB goes on to be selected in the first round to fill the void that my NFL team has at that position, in a masterful stroke of luck and draft-day maneuvering. Fast-forward to the preseason, and my QB goes from being at the bottom of the depth chart, to reaching the top by virtue of both circumstance and increasingly-solid performances.

And just as he's making his first regular season NFL start of his career (against a division rival, no less), I happen to score seats only a few rows away from the field through another stroke of luck (work raffle to upgrade/swap seats already purchased).

The only other way the stars could align more perfectly would be for Flacco to take the Ravens to their second Super Bowl win, in Tampa, the site of their first Super Bowl win, in his rookie season. ;)

Im going to the game Sunday and All I want to see is Flacco have time to stand in the pocket and have the chance to throw. I hate to bring it up but Boller took so many hits over the past years and he takes way to much crap for stuff that wasnt his complete fault and that he cant really help, yes hes made horrible throws but at the same time it seeeed he was always rushed.

I just hope Joe has a honest chance sunday.

i agree, kyle if healthy should have been starting this game but because he's not and we don't have another option, Flacco make the most of it...

I hope this is not the case, Fans should look at the whole picture, and maybe they should look at our recievers NOW. A QB is as only as good as His offense IMO.

I agree, and really what would Flacco learn from Smith if He started anyways? Boller may be no better then Smith but at least He could help flacco with reading defenses and such.
You used the word Flacco just Enough, not too much and not too little! :D

I dont want to be negative in any way but I feel I have too. I like flacco and I think he will be good in the future but its hard for me to go into a season thinking we have no chance of going far in a season regardless of what everyone says. But with a rookie qb its just a fact basically that you arent going to make it far. So as much as I think Flacco will be good, I think Smith and Boller can lead this team far with some help from the guys around them. In my opinion flacco can play well enough to get us off to a 2-0 start vs cinci and the texans and then boller or smith or harrington or bouman or stoney case or scott mitchell or elvis grbac or tony banks or trent dilfer or anthony wright (sorry i got a little sidetracked) anyways one of our vets can take over by week 3 and take us pretty far this season if everyone can stay healthy. Good Luck Joey Flacco
