Ravens' Forum - Top 10 In The NFL List

34 posts in this topic

This is a knee jerk reaction to the asinine list that ESPN came up with. Please give your unbiased Top 10 list of current players in the NFL. Feel free to add any comment to defend your selection....

Here is my top 10 list:

1. Peyton Manning
2. Ed Reed
3. Tom Brady
4. Haloti Ngata
5. Polamalu
6. Darelle Revis
7. Andre Johnson
8. Adrian Peterson
9. Patrick Willis
10. Aaron Rodgers

Honorable Mention: Clay Mathews, Ray Lewis, Namdi Asamugha, DeMarcus Ware and Julius Peppers...

If he was in a different scheme, Polamalu would not have made it into my top 10 or even honorable mention roll. However, Ed Reed would be #2 regardless of the scheme he played in!

This was difficult on me because my bias was to put Ray into my top 10, but just could not on current level of play. Sorry Ravens fans!

Might catch some flak for this but:

1. Darrelle Revis
2. Peyton Manning
3. Tom Brady
4. Demarcus Ware
5. Haloti Ngata
6. Andre Johnson
7. Adrian Peterson
8. Ed Reed
9. Chris Johnson
10. Clay Matthews (Thought about putting Patrick Willis here but I'd be acting as a bandwagoner since I don't watch much of the 49ers. So I went with Clay instead)

Peyton Manning #1? Didn't follow him too much this year but last time I checked he was throwing 4 INT's a game on more than 1 occasion.

In this era, Peyton Manning will always be the Michael Jordan when discussing QBs (though without the rings) simply because of what he's done the past decade. Tom Brady does have the rings but Peyton Manning has more MVPs which is an individual honor over Tom Brady who only has 2. Brady is deserving of being Number 1, but Peyton could easily be one as well.

And despite all the INTs, he still put up a monster numbers with 4,700 passing yards and 33 TDs.

1) Drew Brees

4) Haloti Ngata

7) Nnamdi Asomugha

9) Ed Reed
10) Troy Polamalu

My logic behind Brees at #1 is that he has singlehandedly carried his offense, the success of the team often hinges upon his individual success, and he inspires his team much in the same way as Ray Lewis with the Ravens. While you could argue these same reasons for Peyton Manning, his string of erratic performances in the middle of last season was the reason why he's not #1 over Brees or Brady, and was ultimately the difference between himself and Brees. Brady gets the #2 spot simply because he has showed no clear signs of age and has continued to play well, but could not will his team to victory as consistently as he has in the past.

I like your logic, but by extension of the same logic, shouldn't Aaron Rodgers be rated higher than Brees? The Packers were a wild card team that literally lucked into the playoffs. He single handedly made them SB champs did he not?

Not really. He played some amazing ball but Green Bay's run to a championship was very team-orientated. It always is.

Well Ed_Reed20, let us agree to disagree... I do think the Saints are pretty team oriented as well.

The Packers played well without Aaron Rodgers when he was lost to a concussion. Also, as ER20 noted, the Packers have always been more team-oriented than most of the league. The Packers have Clay Matthews on the other side of the ball, after all. No one else outside of my Top 3 has truly willed their teams to victory on a consistent basis over the past 3 years.

While arguments could be made for Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Troy Polamalu (among others) who've willed their teams to victory, none have done it on as regular of a basis as Brees/Brady/Manning over that span. In the case of Reed/Lewis/Polamalu, the Ravens and Steelers had been competitive in enough games to where they weren't often in a position where they needed be willed to victory -- at least not as much as in years past.

My top 10:

1) Peyton Manning
2) Tom Brady
3) Aaron Rodgers
4) Drew Brees
5) Adrian Peterson
6) Darrelle Revis
7) Andre Johnson
8) Haloti Ngata
9) Demarcus Ware
10) Troy Polamalu

People forget how banged up the Colts were last year, but Peyton still led them to the playoffs...again. Even though his numbers weren't as good he gets the edge over Brady because I think Brady's success is at least partially due to the genius of Bill Belichick. Peyton does it all on his own...the Colts would be mediocre at best without Manning.

The Packers (the team, not Rodgers) won the SB. Bradys individual performance outshined Rodgers.

Other than that, good list

My list is entirely based on players as they are right now, with less regard to a career-long body of work.

1)Haloti Ngata
2)Aaron Rodgers
3)Nnamdi Asomugha
4)Antonio Gates
5)Adrian Peterson
6)Demarcus Ware
7)Tom Brady
8)Ed Reed
9)Chris Johnson
10)Andre Johnson

Rodgers was a machine last year, but I honestly believe that no player in the NFL is better at their job than Haloti Ngata. Rodger's performance in the playoffs was almost enough for him to take over the number one spot. A lot of my list was based on who I though was the best at a position, and by how much. I don't think any player dominates their position harder than Antonio Gates, but his injuries last year prevent him from rising above number four. Reed is hurt the same way.

Nice list but I am not sure about Mathews before Patrick Willis... I would put in DeMarcus Ware in Mathews place perhaps if you wanted a pass rusher or really Ngata would be perfect in the top 10!
