I'm all for getting in better shape but hopefully this doesn't backfire.

Warning, the story is by "Reporter" Mike Preston. Did anyone notice that Ngata never actually said how much weight he lost?

That same "Reporter" that reported Kindle was cleared to play before it was announced by the Ravens or Kindle. IJS

Don't hate on Preston! Have you noticed he's very rarely wrong?

Anyways, Ngata did say something about the weight loss, I just read the article. He said he feels stronger, faster, and leaner. I'm all for it, 325 still isn't small by any stretch, and if he's actually gotten stronger too, thats incredible.

Does anyone think Pagano wants more speed on defense? Ngata's down to 325. Cody's down to 330. I heard Arthur Jones has lost some weight. I feel like he wants faster dlinemen. I know he hasn't contacted them lately due to the lockout, but maybe this was his plan before the lockout happened?

6'4" and 325 pounds is still one beast of a man... as long as he maintains his strength, losing the weight can't be seen as a negative.

Ya know what I like, is that he did not even mention holding out like it had not crossed his mind. He is going to play and I think we took that for granted. If he just has the franchise tag this year and doesn't get signed until next year, (which I believe we will sign him this year)but when he said maybe they need the cap room to bring in other guys. That right there is the absolute embodiment of a team player. We need to sign this guy for at least the next 6 years, he is the best at his position, not a prima donna, a true team player, and wants to beat the steelers. I already thought Ngata was great and one of my favorite Ravens but this puts him behind only two.

It's very possible as Pagano has openingly said, he plans on getting more movement with the d-line, with stunts, twists, loops, etc.

The one thing we know about all 3 guys you named is, they are known for their run stopping abilities. Stopping the run is more of a leverage thing then size, take Kelly Gregg as example. So with that said, being quicker, stronger, and leaner shouldn't effect the way Ngata plays from a leverage stand point.

Art Jones, is working out with his brother during MMA, and most of that training is about balance and strength, add that too the fact that Jones has a really strong wrestling background, playing with leverage should be what he excels at.

The only guy I worry about is Cody. It took him about 3 quarters of the season to get in the habit of keeping his pads lower. I would hope with the weight loss, he has been working on balance and leverage this offseason as well.

I think those 3 guys plus Brandon McKinney and Cory Redding will be strong against the run this season.

Then you have Ngata, Redding, Kruger and Jones, to provide a pass rush from the d-line, you can add JJ to that as well. I think one of the biggest reasons why we didn't have a decent pass rush from the d-line last season is because, none of those guys really have pass rush moves. So they basically just bull rushed the 0-line and was stoned most of the times.

Well this year, if Pagano, and CB has these guys stunting, and twisting a lot, that will help put these guys in a much better position to succeed at rushing the passer.

If Ngata played primarily as a NT or DT I would be concerned about the weight loss. However, he primarily plays as a DE so the added speed and quickness is worth it IMO.

So he's slightly less huge...

This reminds me of the study that found that NFL linemen have an average life expectancy of 52 years.

I don't care if it is a 350 lb tank coming at me or a 325 lb tank that is moving faster coming at me. In either case I am scared pantless and getting out of the way real fast!

Great point! I doubt the offensive linemen of the NFL are feeling any better about having to block him. :D

I want him to lose another 50 pounds and become the LOLB opposite Suggs.

Or we could do intelligent things..

No doubt lol. If anything, this should help Ngata in situations where he's rushing the passer since he should be able to get to them that much quicker.

So exactly at what point do you get reduced from gigantic? The only reason I ask is because taking 25 lbs from Haloti is kinda like taking a cup of water from the Ocean and claiming the ocean is smaller. As true as it may be it is not enough for a huge difference as far as power and size.

Lord, a stronger, quicker, faster Haloti Ngata? That's gonna give players nightmares. Losing a little mass isn't gonna hurt him, we're still gonna see guys flying over top his head not only that but more sacks I bet.

Yeah, I think its a positive all around! Like Crabcakes said, stronger, faster and quicker? Sure, I'll take it!

Yea, sure Pagano has some how, some way sent a message out to the players letting them know how he will utilize them with seeing how Cody has dropped his weight and now Ngata. Stunts, twist, shifting them around..... trying to add as much confusion as possible for opposing O-lines. I'm excited about this upcoming season, man.....

I think Ngata would be an exception to that average. He isn't your typical lineman and is quite lean for his size! Dude's a freak of nature. :P

Maybe he gets 10 sacks this year stronger and a more faster ngata equals dominance!!!
[/quote]

If Kindle provides a strong pass rush from the other side of Suggs, and the d-line does as much stunting and movement as I think it will definitely be possible.

To other factors that will help Ngata and the entire pass rush is, the run defense and the offense.

With Cody and Jones in their second years, Redding and McKinney coming on strong at the end of last season, and just a more attack style by Pagano, our run defense should be back to what we expect. If and when that happens, teams will be forced into a lot of 2nd and long/3rd and longs. That will forces QBs to hold the ball a lot more.

With the offense, if these guys are as explosive and aggressive as I think they'll be this year, we'll be putting up a lot of points early. That will allow the defense to pin their ears back and just hunt.

Kinda like the Patriots back in 2007. There defense wasn't that good, it was their offense that put up big points and forced teams to throw early and often. I'm not saying our offense will be like theirs, but we'll be in that 25-27 points a game range.

Haloti Ngata is the man. He will be the face of this defense when RL52 is no longer around. Ngata is just such a rare talent when you watch him on film, he will only get better.

At first I wasn't crazy about it, but if he says he feels stronger now, then thats a good sign.At the very least it should help keep his stamina up.

in the trenches that speed/quickness is going to make all the difference same with Cody. If they get to the point of attack before to o linemen is able to set up the battle is already won. Im all for weight loss in the interest of quickness(to a certain degree)

Aww man, he dropped to the average weight of 3-4 nose tackles while likely improving his stamina, burst and quickness (apparently his strength too?!).

Get the damn lockout sorted so Ngata can go throw multiple offensive linemen into their own Quarterbacks.

Did anyone see Ngata on the Top 100 reaction show? He looked more like a DE, in that Richard Seymour mold, then what we are used to seeing from him.

He's gonna have a monster season. He might literally be unblockable this season.

I know! He looks like a linebacker. He must have really dense, heavy core. He doesn't look close to 325. He's insane! Maybe he can be an edge rusher on third down? Haha.
