OK Ravens fans, it's time for this week's Bold Predictions! Please give us your reasoning as well.

Q: Will Sergio Kindle be a starting pass rusher by the end of the season?

Thanks for all your feedback!

I don't think hes healthy enough to start. He'll need at least another year to have a chance to become a 3 down player imo.

I think he'll take 3rd down snaps and end up with 4-5 sacks on the year.

Yes. Because he's a beast.

Not starter. Might be limited to third down or passing downs. But to make a big impact on this season, he doesn't need to be a starter.

I dont really see him as a starter, barring injury to JJ that is. Its possible that he impresses to the point he gets to start, but I see him more as a 3rd down pass-rush specialist.

Not starter. But definitely having a huge pass rushing presence by playoff time.

Kindle will be a pass rush specialist and I'm not sure the Ravens are gonna wanna miss with his pass rush production and force him to focus on being a 3 down OLB.

I feel as a DC Chuck Pagano will be more of a Mike Nolan type 3-4 defensive guy, then a Rex Ryan or Mattison type. So with that, I think back to 2003. That year Suggs was nothing more then a pass rush specialist as a rookie. He produced 12 sacks, and the Ravens didn't mess with him in terms of asking him to play the run often.

I think Kindle will be asked to do the same things this year. Suggs was a rookie on a relatively young team in 2003, so the potential to start was definitely there. Kindle is coming into more of a veteran defense, and JJ is still really affective on 1st and 2nd downs.

Kindle will be asked to just use that speed to come off the edge on 3rd and longs, or obvious pass situations, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him have similar success as Suggs did in his rookie season back in 2003.

If Kindle has half the "rookie" year Suggs had, I think we'll all be thrilled....especially given the circumstances!

I think Sergio will be an Antwan Barnes this season. A situational pass rusher. Barnes, I noticed in preseason right before we traded him (still don't understand that), really started to show good signs and do good things in run stopping. I think it will take a couple of years at least for Kindle to do that. And if you aren't a consistent run stopper at the LB position, you will not be a starter for the Ravens.

Well then, I suppose it's a good thing that Kindle may be even better against the run than he is a pass rusher, else he would not be starting for us.

Other than coverage skills and experience, JJ has nothing on Kindle ... don't get too used to calling JJ our starting OLB

Being bold: Not a starter, but a third-down rusher with double digit sacks - ala Terrell Suggs in 2003. Barring any health issues, he [s]could[/s] should be an opening-day starter in 2012.

I was never really sold on JJ to begin with - I remember making a topic on here to that effect - but it's hard not to like him. A smart, consistent player with a motor. He may not be flashy, but he's solid, and I would love to see what he can do coming off the bench.

yeah, at the risk of sounding ungrateful for what he's done for us, because we all love the guy, JJ is a stop gap type player. That ATL game last year in particular was painful to watch.

Kind of funny we're talking about this, because I was originally going to say that JJ will be the role player, subbing in for Kindle. But that wont happen immediately. Rest assured, it will happen, and it will happen before the season is over.

I think he could start by the bye week. He's a much better run stopper than some of you give him credit for. Watch some of his film at Texas. He's a solid player against the run. It's coverage I'm concerned about. But I don't think we intend on using him in that role anyway.

Who got the other half?
[/quote]

First game of the season, on a huge 3rd & 7. both Kindle and Suggs come rushing off the edge and get to Ben at the same time.

Big hit, forced fumble, and M&T Bank goes crazy with Kindle celebrating his first NFL sack.

I don't think he'll start this season, unless he is much better than I think he will be and takes us by storm or JJ has another below-par season due to injuries or just playing badly.

I think he'll end up with 5-6 sacks. Maybe start next year. Id like to see JJ move to the line though.
Be like Suggs Lewis Kindle
Johnson Ngata Cody Redding

We're talking about replacing JJ here - the guy is nice but he's closing in on the end of his career and has been injury-prone. He won't be out there starting all 16 weeks.

That would make our defense a 4-3 and we don't have the defensive talent to get pressure on the QB with just a 4 man rush. That is where the Ravens had problems with Mattison.

We ran a 3-4 defense with 4-3 principles.

Now I wouldn't mind moving JJ to the Dline at the 3 or 5 techinque, but only occasionally.

Allow him to put pressure on the T and G, with Suggs rushing off the edge. Allow Kruger to rush from the other side, with Kindle coming of the edge with him. Then allow Ngata to collapse the interior from the NT position on passing downs.

However putting Johnson on the Dline, with Ngata, Cody and Redding, would be highly ineffective imo.

Yea JJ is will be 30 this season, and he has dealt with injuries the last 2 season.

However we are talking about a guy that has played in 127 regular season games. He's started in 79 of those games. He's started the last 64 games in a row, and he's the only Raven to do that over the last 4 years. The dude is tough and hard nosed.

So if Kindle will take starts away from JJ, it probably won't be because JJ just couldn't last a full 16 game schedule. Kindle will have to outwork JJ and prove he deserves to start, If he's gonna start over JJ at any time this season.

Fly liked the Kindle pick even more than I did haha.

I say he starts as a situational pass rusher like Suggs did his first year and by week 12 he starts. Now if Pagano was really creative he'd find a way to move JJ around on the pass rush inside.

lol yeah man, Ozzie was very good to me the last years -- got both my man crushes (Kindle and J. Smith).

I think what you said above is pretty much what will play out. Sometime between week 9 - 12 it will be all Kindle, all the time..that would be something, considering our tendancy to not give defensive rookies a lot of playing time.,,,,

I give JJ credit where he is due, but part of the reason he started so much is because we didn't have anyone behind him. Now that we have Kindle, he won't have to be out there hurt. So are the Ravens going to keep an overworked, possibly injured JJ out there because he's done it before?
