Anybody else disappointed the first one isn't in this. I would of rather it be in it than snake eater. For me it's the difference between buying and not buying it.

Three reasons why they didn't include the original:

1) They wanted to leave open the possibility of doing a full remake later as both a cash-grab and an opportunity to transition away from the Kojima era once he begins to step away from the series.
2) They're touting this collection as the first time these games have been on PS3; the original is currently available on PS3 as a PSN download, albeit in standard-def.
3) It was easier for them to improve on the graphical fidelity of the PS2 games, than to try and overhaul and upscale the dated graphics of the PS1 original.

True, just disappointing. I haven't played peacewalker and I like Metal Gear 2, but it's not enough for me to want to buy it.

I've always had issues with the MGS series. While they're great games, they've never been favorites because there's always been the little things that turned me off. For the most part, while the voice-acting is top-notch, the story has gottten so convoluted over the years, I haven't had any reason to keep caring about the characters outside of Snake.

In keeping with my gripes about the story, the cutscenes are also obnoxiously long at times, particularly in MGS2 and MGS4. While I like elements of the story, it shouldn't take so much dialogue or so many cinematics to help it unfold. Video games, after all, are an interactive medium, and there's very little interactivity in these scenes.

Finally, the imbalanced gameplay. While MGS4 came the closest to achieving that balance between player freedom and staying true to the core stealth gameplay, there's times where each game doesn't know when to be a shooter and when to be a strictly stealth title. I like that the developers have given players the freedom to choose their approach, but that window of choice is sometimes not as large as you'd think. For instance, there's times where stealth is 100% required or else you fail, whereas there's other times where you must gun your way through or the story won't continue. Often, the timing of these segments is odd, as you expect to sometimes sneak through a scenario and end up being told to shoot, or vice versa.

4) The original MGS was already remade on the Gamecube (The Twin Snakes). That doesn't mean that they wouldn't remake it again, but I would say that makes it less likely.

I'm pretty excited for this though. The Metal Gear series has always been one of my favorites and it should be fun to play those games again in HD.

I think that, the Twin Snakes version aside, if they do a full remake, it'll actually be a reboot. That's probably the word I meant to use in clarifying that they'll want to use that opportunity later to transition away from the Kojima era by rewriting the series' history and taking it in a different direction. The new Mortal Kombat game has shown that, if you stick to the core elements of the original but you deviate just enough to make it fresh, reboots can work in reviving a property.

I just bought the first one off PSN. It was the best in the series in my opinion. Such a Classic Game.

Agree 100%, it's the only one I actually care about.

The first was the best, but 2 and 4 are not far behind.

No love for Snake Eater? I'm not sure how I would rank the games aside from the first being my favorite, but I can definitely say that Snake Eater has the best boss battles of the series. The fight against The End (the old sniper dude) might be my favorite boss battle of any game EVER.

The battle with The End was one of the best boss battles of the series but I wouldn't put it over the Psycho Mantis one in the first MGS.

Now that I think of it, I'd put the third game over the second one. It goes like this for me:

MGS-->MGS4-->MGS3-->MGS2

The fight with The End and the fight with The Boss was just too great and I prefer the overall gameplay in MGS3 over MGS2.

I definitely think the reason one wasn't included was due to the fact that it's on the PSN. Why? Because Silent Hill 1 is being left off of the Silent Hill HD Collection, and it's also available on PSN. Truth be told, I'm more excited for the Silent Hill collection then I am for the Metal Gear Solid collection.

Only MGS game I could get into was MGS3. Though admittedly the story never drew me in in any of the games.

Now Silent Hill, there's a franchise I can talk about.
