Purple Punishment

Man Cured Of HIV

22 posts in this topic

Crazy stuff. Usually I would just not care but this is crazy to me. I wonder how he will spend the rest of his life now? He better find a cure for something.

Actually there are many people that on meds and have no viral load that are essentially cured-- I think Magic Johnson is one of them. With the drug cocktails HIV is more a chronic disease like COPD or Diabetes. At least they have gotten that far. When I was in nursing school in the '80's it was a 2 year death sentence.

Stem cells are amazing.

Interesting indeed. I just hope this research can help some people out there with this horrible disease.

Incredible, I always thought it would take the nanobot era to stop the disease.
[/quote]

Well thankfully it hasnt come to that era. Stem Cells can be engineered to do almost anything. Brand new limbs are being created with stem cells. Cancers are being obliterated by them. It boggles my mind (without getting political) that our nation did not fully engage in the research of stem cells when they were discovered.

Answer to that is, there is no money in the cure of diseases, the money is in the medicine, supressants, etc. It wouldnt surprise me now that this story broke, Pharmaceutical companies will start some type of propaganda campaign to talk about how bad stem cells are. They are going to lose TRILLIONS of dollars

This. I remember years ago a college said they had discovered a cure for aids. It wasn't but a few weeks that a pharmaceutical company bought the rights and you never heard a word about it again. The money is in never ending treatment, not cures. It's borderline evil, actually.

I remember the saying that as well as a german woman claiming she created something to kill it as well. Funny how these things just come up as big stories and then disappear in obscurity.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist but it would be awfully convenient for a new disease to come out that stem cells cannot cure.....

Extremely evil actually, I am not sure of the accuracy of the story but I read that the Bayer corporation gave medicines tainted with HIV to foreign nations.

Thats an interesting article. The donor who gave the bone marrow transplant could be in high demand. Hopefully, we arent too far from being able to culture and expand hematopoietic stem cells indefinitely. Hypothetically, in the future that donor's stem cells could be harvested and given to HIV patients around the world. Of course, HIV is a tricky disease because there are many different strains and because of the nature of the virus it is always changing.

So, the money is in the treatment. I have to say that crosses the line into outright evil, but then again, that's just me.

do you really buy that? Because the businessman in me thinks that letting your customers die isn't the greatest of ideas.

So lets suppose the claim was true and a cure for AIDS was found. What does that cure consist of? (ongoing treatments, take a magic pill / injection for a few weeks, whatever)
and just as importantly (in context to the discussion) how wealthy do you think you would become if you found the cure for AIDS?

You'd only acquire wealth until the last person was cured.

On the flip-side, with people still and forever getting infected, you could give them years and years of drug cocktails to keep them alive as long as possible.

The money is in the treatment, not the cure.

I wouldn't be interested in wealth were I to find the cure for HIV/AIDS. What matters is that the cure would be found, and I would donate my share of the money to continue funding for cures for other diseases, such as cancer and also diabetes.

As for what the cure would consist of, I don't really know what it would consist of, but I do believe in a cure. Who knows, we may just see such a cure in our lifetime.

problem with that reasoning is, well, a lot:

1. The cure would almost certainly be an on going treatment lasting months. And cost more than what they are paying now.

2. I highly doubt every single person would be cured. There will always be new patients, since people will always be getting affected.
On top of that, having a cure might have the effect of people being less stringent in preventing it in the first place, so the new infection rate could even rise. Finally, there's the reality that many of those who were cured would get re-infected, since most people who contract it in the first place lead lifestyles that well, puts them at risk to get infected.

3. Even if every single person was cured, and we figured out a way to prevent people to ever get infected again (yeah right), by the time all those people were cured, the company would have more money than they'd know what to do with. They'd just go home, drink a beer and enjoy their money.

certainly, but the conspiracy theory revolves around the assumption that these companies aren't as noble as you or me.

But like most conspiracy theories, it makes little sense if you think it through.

I am very positive that we will find a cure very soon (meaning within a decade or so). I'm more concerned about cancers.,,,,,,,,

Borderline? No evil is the right word. The way I see it, you have millons of peoples lives in your hands and you choose not to help them only yourself. We cant refer to hitler as evil and not put these people in the same class.
