32 posts in this topic

Hey Ravens fans, we're starting a new series called "Bold Predictions," or something like that, and we want to hear from you!

First question, who will be the Ravens' leading receiver in 2011 in terms of yards? (RBs and TEs can be included too).

Give us your bold prediction (and why) and we'll pick some of the best comments to feature in a blog tomorrow!

Prediction: allows Flacco to amass 550 pass attempts.Reason:Nature running it's course. They have to descend at some point.

Come to think of it, I made a bold prediction thread a few weeks ago; maybe you can scan through that as well.

I think Boldin ends up as the leading WR, just making it to 1,000 yards. He should benefit greatly with a vertical threat in Smith, and an improved run game.

But he barely gets to 1,000 yards, because the team just has so many weapons in Smith, Mason, Doss, Heap, and the other 2 TE's. Not to mention Rice should get his catches as well.

Of course, I'm assuming Cam actually uses the insane amount of weapons we have.

Sorry disregard previous posts; forgot that you asked a question.Leading Reciever:Boldin (who else could it be??)85 receptions, 1250 yards, 11 TDReason:has a full season with Flacco and Cam under his belt, and between Smith, Doss, Reed and Dickson one of those guys will step up and help free up Boldin.

Barring injury, it should be Q.

Who comes in second is a complete toss-up though. Both Heap and Mason will be challenged by some talented young players and I'll be surprised if their snaps aren't being cut into late in the season.

Boldin, but I don't think he'll have an overwhelmingly good season (1,200yds+). I'd prefer to see the ball spread around to see our rookies and second year players involved a lot. Rice will have another good year for a RB, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a decline in his receiving figures, for the aforementioned reason.

Boldin and Rice aren't bold predictions. I'll say James Hardy - reason being we have no idea of what he can do. Unless Ed's return yards count. Then it's all #20.

I have to agree with this. What is "bold" about Boldin or Rice? Hardy could definitely be the dark horse. That size has to be very tempting, especially in the end zone. He may not get 1200 yards, but I bet he leads in TDs.

I'll say Dickson. He may not lead receiving yards, overall, but he could be the most productive TE - Todd Heap is still aging.

Torrey Smith. He might be the 3rd WR come week one, but he'll slowly work his way into the starting lineup, taking over for Mason. The front office likes him too much to play the "sit and learn" approach, and he comes out with a season worthy of OROY honors. He might not have a 101 reception, 1300 yards receiving, 8 TD season like Anquan did in his rookie year, but Torrey's stats will be inflated because of his extremely long catches and what he does after the catch.

My prediction for Torrey - 80 receptions, 1100 yards, 5 TD's. Enough to lead the team, enough to leave Ravens fans extremely excited to finally have that young WR who we know for sure will be our new number one for a very long time.

Hardy is definitely a bold prediction but I'm gonna throw in Tandon Doss. I can see him taking over for Mason before Torrey does because he's already a better route runner than Torrey and seems to have sure hands. He's good after the catch and I can see him turning smaller throws into bigger gains. I can also see him becoming one of Flacco's favorite targets, since he picked him.

Although, I'm hoping the ball gets spread around a lot this year with all the talent we have at WR, TE, and RB.

Boldin will hit 1100 Yards and about 6 Touchdowns.
Mason will hit around 750 yards and 4 Touchdowns.
Hardy will hit around 550 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Torrey will hit around 450 yards and 4 touchdowns.

I think Tandon Doss is going to really turn alot of heads this season. He wont lead Ravens in receptions this year, But If he is given the chance I think he will put up some impressive numbers.

that would be sweet; thats 21 TDs right there. Figure Heap gets his usual 5 or so TD, Rice gets a couple, and between Doss, Dickson and Pitta they can collect a handful, and Flacco will be well over 30 TDs.

And people will still criticise him haha,,,,

Not to mention David Reed. It'd be a crime if they didn't get him more involved with the offense this year.

30 TDs for Flacco is looking very realistic right now.

Too many mouthes to feed.

Anquan, Derrick, Rice, Todd, Ed, James, and Torrey. Thats 7 guys right there. Pitta, Doss, Reed and whoever our number 2 back will rarely get playing time.

I know, but a healthy rotation of guys would be a good thing. I don't want a repeat of last year where we only had a combination of Q, Mase or TJ on the field at once. Hopefully we mix things up a bit with who we throw onto the field this year.

I'm not saying Reed should have at least 20 catches or something along those lines, but definitely more than just the one target he got last year would be great.

I actually think that will be one of the strengths of this offense. The ability to mix and match with any defense and create mismatches.

Unlike last season, the Ravens now have guys who can provide different weapons to this offense. Last year it was Mase, Q and TJ, who were guys who could dominate any defense underneath, but once we got past that 15 yard range, there success depended on other guys. Heap is the only player that I can really say shined in the offense last season.

This year we still have Q, Mase, and Heap. We all know what they do well, but then you add a Torrey Smith, who is believed to be a deep threat. If he can establish himself early, his speed alone could create space for Q, Mase and Heap. But he also can be a play maker in his own right.

David Reed and James Hardy can also be deep threats. Hardy with his size and speed could be big trouble for defenses. Reed with his balance and shifty ability, could be used in a similar fashion as Boldin.

Then you have Tandon Doss, who'll probably see a lot of 3rd down action if he establishes himself early enough. He falls in that same mold as Mase, and Housh, but is a faster version, so he'll be able to do a little more.

Then add in Dickson and Pitta, the Ravens can really mix and match. For a team who has a lot of smaller DBs in that 5'9-5'11 range, the Ravens could roll out offensive set that consist of Hardy, Doss, Q, Heap, Dickson and Pitta. All of those guys are at least 6'1 and has a physical style of play. They should be able to out physical a smaller secondary.

For a speedy secondary, maybe you wanna match speed with speed. In that case you utilize Smith, Reed, Doss, and Dickson alot. Boldin Heap and Mason will still get there catches, but you'd be able to throw a lot of different looks at a defense and that would make game planning against the Ravens really tough.

For a team like the Bengals or Colts who really like to play a tight zone against the Ravens. Speed and a strong running game would be able to loosen that defense up and create space for Boldin and Rice underneath. Having guys who can attack the safeties outside the numbers, will open up the seams for Heap and Dickson/Pitta.

The Ravens can now go 3TE 2RB I-Formation sets. From that same offensive set, we could play power football, go no huddle and be able to spread the defense out in the passing game, without missing a beat. From that same formation we could split Heap and Dickson out wide, keep Pitta at the TE, and motion Rice out to the slot, with McClain lined up as the single back.

The Ravens have the capabilities to go small with Mason, Reed, and Smith as the 3 WR, Rice and Allen/Steele as the 2 RB

We could go 5 WR, and instead of using a guy like Troy Smith like we have in the past, we'll actually be able to use 5 WRs capable of making plays. Boldin, Mason, Reed, Smith, Hardy or Heap, Dickson, Pitta, Reed and Doss or Boldin, Doss, Hardy, Heap and Dickson in the redzone.

The possibilities are endless imo. The biggest thing is the oline blocking their butts off to allow this offense to open up the playbook. Flacco has to be decisive with the ball and his decision making. Cam has to actually understand what each player does well and is capable of, in order to get the fullest potential out of the offense. But most importantly everyone from coaches to players have to pay greater attention to details and execute.

I really think the Ravens will do big things this year offensively.

I'm gonna say Boldin. But I think Doss is going to surprise a lot of people. Same thing could happen with Torrey Smith.
