,

I always felt switching Oher and Gaither was a stupid move on our part.
Gaither played great at LT, Oher was a beast at RT. What did they possibly expect to gain by the switch? As it turned out, the worst case scenario played out..,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Politics plays a role in everything. We talking about a 1st round draft pick that had a movie made about him compared to a 5th round supplemental pick that flies under the radar as far as the NFL as a whole on his productivity.

Nothing personal but I don't think that anyone in the Ravens organization would hold that thought in higher regard than the best interests of the team, which would appear to be Gaither at LT and Oher at RT.

Gaither didn't get much help in 08 or 09 while playing at LT. In 08' most of the protection was slide towards Willie Anderson or Yanda. In 09' Oher was even help at the RT position as well.

In 2008 Gaither was credit for only 1 sack allowed. Despite playing against the likes of Harrison, Woodley, Ware, Williams, Freeny, Mathis, Hanesworth, Tuck, and Osi, Gaither gave up his lone sack in the last game of the season vs the Jaguars.

The reason why Gaither was moved was for injury concerns or at least that was the word coming from the Castle. The Ravens wanted their franchise QB's blindside to be protected by someone who could play a full 16 games, and Gaither hadn't proven to be able to do that.

Even when the Ravens moved Gaither to RT, he was still competing for the LT job. During the 3 or 4 days Gaither was healthy for Training Camp, he started at LT and he and Oher rotated between LT and RT.

With all of this said, I can't see a reason why the Ravens would keep Gaither and not allow him to compete for the LT position he has played so well for us.

Having the 2010 CBA rules would probably be a win win for both Gaither and the Ravens. Why, because in that one season, Gaither can prove he is and can stay healhty, he can prove to be one of the better young LTs in the NFL, and the Ravens can see everything they need to see before giving up the big money.

As far as Oher, I think he is talented enough to be good at either Tackle position. If given time i'm sure he'll be a really good LT, however I don't think he is not nor will he be better then Gaither at the LT position. jmo.

Imo the lockout will prevent the Ravens from moving Gaither to the Right side, because we'll have to hit the ground running, and won't really have the time to break Gaither into a new position.

Gaither is comfortable with the LT position, Oher is comfortable with the RT position. Also Grubbs is comfortable with Gaither and Yanda should be comfortable playing next to Oher. I think the Ravens have to continue to say that Oher will be a good LT, because they don't know if they'll need him to play there this season or not. However I think they fully learned their lesson last season about not trying to fix something that isn't broken.

They thought they could just move Oher to LT and it would be a seamless transition, but were proven wrong. Oher struggled more then any of us would have expect or liked to see. I think without even playing last season, Gaither proved his worth to this Ravens team. Now they have to give him the opportunity to prove he can be a top notch LT in the NFL.

I don't remember many people criticizing the move when it was first made. The reason for that was Gaither missed a big chunk of the season and Oher had filled in amazingly for him during that time, plus switching back and forth between the two pretty much every week depending on whether or not Gaither was happy. Everyone bashing the coachign staff for making the switch now needs to think for a minute or two before recriminating.

I agree that, if he's healthy, Gaither is the better choice to play LT now, since we've seen the Oher experiment go on. It wasn't exactly a failure, Oher was pretty solid, despite the penalties, but Gaither was an elite talent. However, people bashing Harbaugh for trying it in the first place are well in the wrong.

I personally didn't like the move from day one, and I also didn't understand why so many people where bashing Gaither and pretty much slandering his name.

As for Harbs, I don't think many people are bashing him for making the switch, because obviously it needed to be made with the way things played out last season, Gaither not playing and all. If I remember correctly, most people loved the move and was ready to ship Gaither out of the door, until the season played out and it was clear that we needed him.

Harbs did what he needed to do as a Head Coach, whether that was listen to the previous Oline coach who's now fired, or ultimately making the decision himself. However what Harbs may be bashed for is, if for whatever reason he and Gaither can't get past what happened last season, and Harbs punishes him by saying play RT or hit the road.

Oher will be a really good LT in the NFL, and maybe even great if given the time. However he is not the best LT we have on this team, and playing him at LT over Gaither would be a disservice to the team. That's if Gaither proves to be the better option at LT.

I think you're mistaken, because I know I wasn't the only one one who thought moving Gaither and Oher around was a bad idea.

and no, none of us are in the wrong for criticising Harbaugh/Cameron for it. It was a dumb idea in the first place, and that was proven last season.

They probably switched gaither so he would get motivated. Also it was worth seeing how Oher played at LT. Gaither got a lot of help on the left side, as most LT's do, but he played well. He's still a better run blocker than anything.

My big concern is I don't think Oher and Grubbs is as good a tandem as Gaither and Grubbs. Oher/Yanda and Grubbs/Gaither are both great tandems, but we might need to move harewood to LG so we can get some punch on the left side.

Could watch Yanda/Oher maul dudes in run blocking all day long in that 2009 season. Just ornery SOBs that season and I loved it.

Didn't see that happen last year at all. The LG,RG,LT and most importantly the Center were atrocious last year. Matter of fact...it was so bad that they needed to add our receivers: Ray Rice + Todd Heap + Anquan Boldin ALL had to block rushers when it came to blitz. It would've been an absolute mess if those 3 werent there....

I'm talking 09, when Yanda and Oher were both on the right side.

Really? LG and RT instead of RT?

Really? Ben Grubbs was worse at LG than Yanda was at RT? Really?

None of this would have happened if John Harbaugh didn't make a foolish move by putting Oher at LT. Don't understand why you mess up a good thing. We're in "WIN NOW" mode and the Gaither/Oher combo was a beast when they were both on the field. What was the point of swapping positions when it wasn't needed? Should have taken advantage of having Gaither while we still had him under contract. Jah Reid better be a beast or Harbs will continue to look clueless. I like Harbs, but this dog house garbage (And ridiculousness with the coaching staff) has cost us a championship... twice. (2008 & 2010) But to stay on topic, glad to see Gaither is "ok" and ready, hah.

Look what happen. No one can understand the move made by putting Oher at LT and Gaither at RT seeing that the O-line was perfectly fine the season before, sounds like politics got up in the FO to me.

The coaching staff wanted someone less injury-prone with a better work ethic to serve as their longtime LT. That was unquestionably Oher, who everyone thought could step up to the challenge after a tremendous rookie season at RT.

I wouldn't say that it was politics so to speak, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gaither landed himself in Harbs' doghouse, which will be a significant blow to any chances he has of staying here long term.

Now I'm not going to take anything away from Oher, I think he has the potential and tools to be an elite franchise LT... but we already had that. I have to agree with Greatness post that we're going to look stupid if Oher doesn't improve and RT remains a problem.

You are right about that considering we had enough opportunity to address the problem before the season last year and chose to completely disrupt the line by using players out of position or using players that shouldn't be starting.

The situation also pointed out the quality of our backups at the tackle position. If the team felt it was better to use our best guard at tackle instead, not saying Yanda did a poor job, then why keep these guys for depth if you have no faith in using them.

I understand both the FO side and Gaithers argument. Gaither has been our starting LT since Ogden left and prob. was the lowest paid LT in the league. IMO the move to RT was made to avoid the same situation that happened with sizzle a couple a years ago. The thinking was if you play him at rt for the year and franchise him you could pay him 7 million on the tag instead of 12. We got the guy in a supp. draft and he was solid its time to pay the guy or let him get paid somewhere else. If we are smart we pay him, put him back at LT and protest Flacco. I promise if Flacco gets hit like last year he's gonna start missing games.

Has Gaither been injured before prior to this back injury deal last season and how many games? Also, the FO/Coach putting someone in the doghouse b/c of work ethic or attitude, I look at that as politics. I mean, if someone is performing good come gameday regardless of their work ethic ( like Iverson for exp. ), I would look over it ( if I'm not mistaken, that great LT that played for Seattle, it was reports that all he did was suit up on Sundays and there has been a few other players that I heard of that was able to perform up to good to elite level of play despite a good work ethic ).

Well, excluding this past season which the FO made their decision before reports of Gaither injury, I wouldn't call missing 6 games injury prone so that reason has to be excluded. I would bet money on iit ( if there were a way to found out ) that it was politics with the pressure of drafting a lineman in the 1st round with the attention that came with Oher like he was the second coming of Ogden or the LT from Seattle ( crazy how I can't remember his name, lol ). They would feel more comfortable paying Oher LT money than Gaither.

I actually needed to correct my post. It was 5 games during 2009. Wks: 5&6, 14,15 & 16. You may be right about the politics. There's always a certain amount of it involved in every business. But, there are other things involved there, like showing up to camp underweight, the locker room fight with Zeus ... that may be affecting their decisions. Who truly knows though. I still say if he is the best at the position, he should be playing there.

I agree that the idea of Harbaugh having a doghouse is politics, but I don't think that he felt so strong about it that he was willing to compromise what was best for the team in order to get his own way about things.

Gaither missed a number of games the previous season and was complaining about niggling injuries going into camp. That coupled with his supposed bad work ethic which they would have been dealing with for far longer than one offseason is what I think cost him his LT spot. I might be wrong, but I hope for the sake of the team that Harbaugh controls his ego and does all that he can to make Gaither stay (within financial reason of course).

It only made sense with Gaither's ongoing history of injuries to move Gaither to the right side since that would be the easiest position where a reserve can be used. If gaither has healed enough to play left tackle then he will be an unrestricted free agent and can sign with another team. We can then insert Cousins or Ried at right tackle.

Gaither, Grubbs, Birk, Yanda, Oher. Now thats a scary good o line. If the front 5 could block without the help of a TE, our offense would start to really become efficient. And our running game will become so much because of it.

Read post above, prior to this injury, he only missed 6 games total so he has no ongoing history of injuries especially considering the FO made the move before Gaither reported his back injury.

And even when he played with his nagging injuries, he played real well. Its tough to point out someone and say, "oo they are injury prone", I mean it is the NFL. Everyone gets hurt.

I still don't understand his injury this past year or what happened to him. Just hope its all better now.
