What Is The NFL's Obsession With Flacco Getting Sacked?

27 posts in this topic

I've been meaning to bring this up for a while because I see it so often. Every time I see it, I wonder the same thing. Why is Flacco getting sacked in every image or video of the Ravens?

Sure we have the old Ray Lewis pregame clip to represent the franchise. But lately there has been a new image.

The latest culprit is on today's NFL.com homepage, where someone decided an image of Flacco getting sacked best represents the Ravens/Steelers game.

Many such examples of this exist, and they primarily occur during an overall recap of all 32 teams rather that just Ravens coverage. Our team's "highlight" always seems to be someone knocking Joe over.

This has happened many times in the last two years, and I don't remember all the instances. Just the ones that really annoyed me.

In the "Best of 2010" video (also NFL.com), the only Raven in sight for the first half of the video is Flacco, getting sacked yet again. I believe he appears in the 2009 version getting sacked as well.

In an 09 commercial played throughout the year during games, the commercial ended on a video of Flacco being sacked by an Indianapolis Colt. I saw this over and over all year.

And of course whenever we heard about Troy Polamalu or the AFC North during playoff time, the only play in the analysts mind was Troy coming unblocked at Joe's blind side. Some analysts claimed it was the play of the year. Was it now? Or was it just another obsession with Flacco being sacked.

Just keep it in mind this year and I'm sure you'll see it too

I hate to say it but I think its because it happens so often and at such pivotal times in a game. IE Troys strip/sack

I think, also, he just happens to absorb so many devastating hits. Looking at those hits objectively, they are pretty impressive-looking, impactful hits. Can't really blame the people editing those videos.

I noticed that too. It's not just in Ravens videos; his sacks are on other teams's highlights too. For a while one of the Colts (Dwight Freeney?) hits on him popped up every where I looked and it seems like he shows up for the Packers alot too.

I think its because Flacco gets sacked. A lot. Even when he has a decent amount of time TO THROW IT AWAY! Any time you back peddle in to an eight yard loss is never a good sign....throw it away. Plain and simple, no excuses.

I've seen this play so many times. Anytime the Ravens or Steelers are talked about at all on either ESPN or NFL Network, this play is shown. It was painful enough to see it live, but do they really have to make me relive that pain almost everyday?

Joe got sacked on the first play of 2010. Haha. I CRINGED when that happened! I was thinking "please joe dont get hurt on the first play!" But like above poster said, joe seems to absorb hard hits..too often though.

I thought Flacco broke his jaw on that play...we're lucky he got a tough QB...

If nothing else it shows how tough Joe is... although more than a few of those hits were his fault.

I agree about the Polamalu play, but other than that, what sack has been pivotal to a game?

It's because it happens so often. He's gotten sacked more and more every year...
True he's sacked a lot, but that's still the vast minority of Ravens plays.

Hawk, are you laying the foundation for another Raven/NFL conspiracy?
Why yes I am. The league is preventing us from winning a Super Bowl by repeatedly showing Flacco biting the turf.

Ive seen him sacked on Nfl Network alot too-also saw Warren Sapp,Eisen, and Jamie Dukes say hell have a tough time beating Big Ben-then they said when will he get a new contract-yeah they seem to not really have much faith in flaccos ability-what the heck

I've noticed this too, especially in commercials. I think its because he's so lanky, he's not a superstar yet, and that we play the Steelers twice a year. Jay Culter and Phillip Rivers get sacked a lot but you hardly see it in highlights.

The only sack I see a lot is the one by the Jets. It's on NFL Network all the time lol. But hey, it was a great hit which knocked the ball loose, so I could understand. But then again, remember who won that game? Oh, yea.

i've seen these images to and i am not bothered by them cause that is what we all witnessed! Flacco, being sacked for various reasons; poor O-line and holding the ball way too long at times!

Flat on his back.

Yeah I hope we can reduce the amount of sacks on Joe this year, especially if we can get our offensive line back to where it was if Gaither re-signs while Reid develops. having Gaither & Oher as Right & Left Tackle, with Yanda back at Guard would be HUGE in regards of reducing the amount of times Joe gets sacked. It would also help if we go back to our 2008 game plan, Run, Run and Run. If Rice gets more carries that's less Joe has the ball and is throwing.

The organization hasn't surrounded Joe with numerous weapons over the past two off-seasons to have him throw less. Of course, you want the running game to be efficient but a better passing philosophy and Joe continuing to improve in the pocket will lead to less sacks.

What we really 'need' is to stop making bone headed mistakes after having huge leads.

The best examples would be the PLAYOFF game vs. Steelers when we were 21-7 and rice fumbles the ball, then a minute later matt birk fumbles the ball to give it to flacco, ...then boldin drops a pass when it was thrown right on his chest.

Or another one would be the vs. texans game when we were in lead 21-7, our O-line decides to goto sleep and flacco receives 4 SACKS in less than 5 minute in offense. The Texans(which were considered one of the worst defense after they lose brian cushing, demarco ryans) and had practice squad pass rushers dominate our O-line.

...if we can stop making bone headed mistakes like that, we have a chance of going to SB.

When you think back to some of the shots Flacco has taken over the last 3 years, I think it's a testament to how tough this guy that "doesn't play with enough passion" is. In his 3 year career, Flacco has never missed a snap due to injury, despite being clearly hurt in some games. He's never just completely went away and had a complete melt down in a game. There might have been a few games where he couldn't get it down at the end, but I can't recall a single game where I watched Flacco just make bone headed mistakes late.

There are not many people outside of Baltimore who believe in Joe, and there are a few people in Baltimore who don't believe in Joe, however the guy on this team fully believe in Flacco. Joe might not yell, scream, and get animated like some other QBs, but his toughness, passion and ability to come up big when things get rough, makes him the kind of QB that anyone who puts on that Ravens uniform will follow.

Haha another picture of Flacco getting hit. Click Here. . I think someone should start a tally of Flacco hits/sacks they see this year in the media.

Does Joe Flacco share the same sack count with Jay Cutler or does Joe has more?
In their respective careers, Cutler has more for the obvious reason. Flacco has more in the last three years and Cutler had more sacks (52 to 40) last season.

Either way Flacco and the offense has to do a better job in regard to sacks. He's been sacked 30+ times in every season.

I think adding more playmaking ability to the offense will help, but execution all around still has to be much better.
