Do We Really Have Our #1 Wr For The Future?

I agree 100% with you... The reason why most see A.J Green and Julio Jones as true #1's because these guys went against the best College CB's... Julio Jones vs Patrick Peterson was a must watch each year.

But i agree with you... If you have different weapons that brings different things... You dont need a true #1...In a system like that... I dont see Desean Jackson as a true #1... The guys is just GREAT at what he does (speed and explosive) ... They use the guy for his strengths... I dont see him as a complete #1 WR... But in their system.. He doesnt have to be a complete WR.
Yea but even with that, how many guys in College that are considered the best player on their team or at their position on that team, turn out to be a really good accountant?

Too often those matchups get overblown. Like Amukamura vs Blackmon. Blackmon had a field day, but that could have been just a bad day for the Prince. It doesn't make Blackmon have the IT factor, or Amukamura any less of a CB.

The same can be said about Jimmy Smith, even with his "character issues" there would have been no way the Ravens would have gotten their hands on him, if he competed in the SEC, because everyone pretty much considers that the best talent in college football.

I just think the IT factor is completely overblown and the term is overused. In 2000 Trent Dilfer had that IT factor for the Ravens. He gave us exactly what we needed, when we needed it to go to and win the Super Bowl. However that doesn't make him a great QB.

I agree with that... I see what Tom Brady do with what he has... I saw Philip Rivers did his thing without his #1 WR...

If you have different weapons... You can get away with not having a true #1... One WR will reach a 1000 yards eventually.
But does reaching 1,000 yards make you a #1 WR? Or does coming up with that big reception when you team needs it in that big game, make you a #1. Over a 16 game season.

6 catches and 63 yards per game will get you 100 catches and 1,000 yards. Any WR on the Ravens roster is capable of that, will they do it is a different story.

Having that #1 WR isn't as important in today's NFL as it was 10-20 years ago. It's just like having that #1 RB. Having a complete WR corp is trumping having that dominate #1WR.

I dont use the "it" factor for any position but the QB position... So im just saying #1 WR...

Blackmon is a BEAST... It wasnt 1 bad game to me because Dude was beast mode on everybody... He would have gave Julio Jones the run for his money as the 2nd WR picked... I think Julio 40 time and no off the field issue would have made him the 2nd WR picked but Blackmon would have most likely been a top 10 pick also... Some can say that was a bad game for Prince but since blackmon did that to almost every CB... Dude just got beat that game... The same with Julio and Peterson... 1 bad game doesnt take away from what you are... But when teams judge a prospect.. they want to see what you can do vs the best in college football because those are the type talents you will see weekly in the NFL...

So matchups are not overblown to me but its not the end all be all.. I do think it can add and subtract to how teams judge/rate you.

I still think Jimmy Smith would have made it to yall even if he was a SEC guy... No one ever doubt his talent... Most had him as the second best CB in the draft... Heck some had him over Peterson... So teams knowing his talent was not his problem... It was the off field stuff was his issue... Talent wise... Teams know the guy was a top 15 guy

I remember seeing a GM say this
"He's as athletically gifted as Asomugha," an NFC personnel director said. "He's got all the ability in the world. He also could be a supreme punk."

"I think Jimmy Smith will be a shutdown corner," said Don Gregory, director of college scouting for the Carolina Panthers. "He's got that Rod Woodson size. He's a press guy. When he wants to play, I think he can be one of the best."

"He speaks well," one evaluator said, noting that Smith earned his degree from Colorado. "But when you get into the background stuff, you don't know if he can turn things around."

"Two abortions, aggravated assault, two minors in possession, three failed drug tests  . . .  that's a little excessive," the personnel man said.
I was thinking.. If Jimmy can go to the right team and have that grind it type mentality... He is going to make GM's look stupid... I think he went to the perfect team... If you cant listen to Ray and Ed Reed... You dont deserve to play football.

But talent wise ... Everybody know dude can be one of the best... I think Ed and Ray will help him get there

I see a #1 as a WR that does it all for you.. Most importantly... Make the big plays when you need them to... In big game situations... You know he is getting the ball and he makes " that play for you... The guy teams know they have to double team/safety over the top and the WR still make plays

I mean sometimes stats con be deceiving... I dont see Welker as a #1 and he is a 100/100 yard guy... But he was that because Moss drew all the double coverage... That help draw coverage away from Welker... Doesnt mean Welker isnt a very good WR because he is...

Regardless... I think Torrey Smith is going to be a very very good WR... What you guys was missing... He can do that.

i agree about matchups being important. People can say 'it was just a bad day', but what seperates the good players from the great ones is stepping up and not having a bad day when you face the cream of the crop.

As for Smith coming to Baltimore, true he is in a system where we expect a certain amount of professionalism, and that can only help.
But Jimmy's going to do what he's going to do. Anyone who is a parent can relate to that; you only have so much control over a person's actiions.

Fortunately, I do believe that Smith already has begun to mature. He has kept his nose clean for a couple years now, and so far has said all the right things when in front of the media.

I agree with what you said, and the IT factor thing wasn't really directed to you, it was just in general. I don't have a problem with the IT factor being used with QB although that also gets over used.

I agree that matches up aren't overblown, I misspoke, like you said, they aren't the end all be all.

I also agree with you about Jimmy Smith.

Yea that's what i'm saying. Often times people look at the stats and deem a WR a #1. That's why I think in today's NFL #1WR are overhyped. Again would it be great to have a Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson or Fitz? of course, however I don't think they are needed.

As you said, Torrey Smith could be just what we need with this offense. If he compliments David Reed, and Tandon Doss compliments them, and the duo of Dickson/Pitta compliment our WRs, then this Ravens offense will be explosive. None of those guys will need to be a #1 WR.

I agree... Is it really good to have one... yes... But its a situational league now... What make the Packers so good... Their James Jones and Jordy Nelson can beat your #3 and 4 CB's (and TE's) ... He can spread the ball around.... The same for Brady and like Rivers showed this year.. The same for Rivers.

i think what he probably means is to compare Allen to a guy who doesn't even start for us isn't a compliment to Allen....

Webb came through for us big time as a rookie, but to me he actually seems to have sidestepped or even taken a step back last year.

ya I agree, i believe his injury hampered him alot. So far in my opinion he's only played to his third round level. I hope i am wrong, but I don't know if Webb can be anymore than a nickelback and/or CB depth.

well, to be fair, for a converted safety just now entering his 3rd season, he's right about where he should be....playing like a 3rd rounder. I think his ceiling is to be a solid #2; if he does that, we can't complain.

True, being a solid #2 is what I was and am hoping he will be. It just doesn't seem like to me he will be a good #2. I just don't see him making a solid #2. I do like Webb and it's early in his career, so hopefully I'm proven wrong. Although I love what we have at CB with or without Wilson and Carr. (I hope at least one come back as I really like both of them)

i have my doubts too. He doesn't have the instincts of a CB, he plays like a LB or safety. But there are times where he shines...it's just that those moments are too far between right now.,,,,

As far as receivers go though, I think a trend worth noticing is look at all the teams who have undoubted number ones; san diego, houston, detroit, atlanta, kansas city, miami, and arizona. Of those only two made the play offs. the reason being is they have so much money tied up in a marquee receiver that the rest of their recieving corps suffers. they just double those big time WR's and the opposing team has nothing left. atlanta and kansas city both had number 1 guys but their running game is what really saved them because their WR was taken out to easily whereas the run takes the sommitment of the front seven. Brady does so well because on a 3rd and 19 who is getting the ball, tate, moss, hernandez, welker, branch. The defenses never knows so they have to pull out their special teamers who rarely see game time reps on the field to cover them or the have to rely on a 1 on 1 situation with a TE/WR on an LB. I would rather just have 3 or 4 guys who could be solid number twos anywhere so that way Dick LeBou can sit back and say hey we are going to put Troy over the top of Q and blitz everyone else because nobody else is worth anything because they were too tied up with having a number 1. If it plays out to potential Doss, Q, Smith, Reed, and maybe Hardy could make life hell on a defense because you are going to have a nickel and dime corner on what would be a #2 receiver or maybe an LB. I would rather have our O be able to dictate favorable matchups then have 1 guy who is a homme run hitter.

you forgot about Indy, Baltimore, the Jests, all of whom made the playoffs. And thats just the AFC.

Marquee WR dont really command any more money than any other position does ... I think of any WR that makes as much as Nnamdi makes/made, for example.,,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh yes I wasn't intending to say that WR's make more than any other position on average. I was just saying if you look at how most franchises spread out the money. They either have one guy who is a monster at the position. ie texans with andre, and the rest of their receiving corps is below average, or you have consistency throughout the position ie pittsburgh, they have no guy who is dominant in all phases (however as much as it pains me it looks like wallace is heading that direction.) but they have a recieving corps that compliments each other very well and all would be solid 2's. And with the jets I dont think Santonio had a huge year for them and I think their offense would still function relatily well considering their overrated QB. And with reggie his best years are behind him, not to say he isnt good but Peyton makes him look a lot better than what his talent is right now. With us and cams play calling and a shoddy o line we really cant have a number one produce on the field.

The Chargers paid V.Jackson 2.5 million last year.. Their ST just sucked... Houston DB's sucked... Detroit is a young team with a hurt QB... Miami and Arizona has QB trouble... The Cost of the WR's have zero effect on the teams.

If you break down Boldin Contract and Roddy Contract by yearly... Boldin is making 7 mil a year and Roddy is making 8 mil a year...

I agree that a #1 WR is nice to have but its not needed to win.... But thats not the reason why those teams didnt make the playoffs.... WR's make money but not that much

and why did V-Jax sit out so many games again ?? as far as the texans for what they are paying andre, could they get decent corners. with detroit their defense needs way more work than the rest of the team, or maybe their o line to keep the QB upright ( although stafford reminds me of crystal chandelier). Miami and Arizona could have both gotten better QB's through free agency. Am I sayng that these teams downfall is WR no not at all, I am just saying these ridiculous contracts for number 1's are getting to the point where you have to pick which position you are going to suck at. QB's, rb's, and wr's are all overpaid in all honesty, there are very few at those positions that earn their money, I would rather have a complete team with no superstar, that means we will be sold everywhere, not great at everything but we wont have holes either. If you can get a superstar for decent cap hit then yeah of course do it.

Come on....If they offered yall Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson today for free or even a 1st round pick... EVERYBODY in your organization and fan base would take him and his salary EASILY

The WR contracts have nothing to do with their team needs... Their GM's just didnt address the problem...

seriously dont think we would, we have to resign ngata, flacco, rice, and other key positions not to mention the rookie contracts, so no I really doubt we would with the kind of paychecks those guys are going to command, which proves my point I would rather have those 3 guys then one perennial pro bowler.

I dont think that you can argue overpaying a #1 WR is the reason why those teams underperformed. There is a whole slew of variables that come into play like injuries, peripheral players not meeting expectations, poor coaching decisions, and failure to execute plays. I highly doubt that the extra 3-4M dollars Andre Johnson got compared to say Anquan Boldin was the reason the Texans finished 6-10.
Come on....If they offered yall Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson today for free or even a 1st round pick... EVERYBODY in your organization and fan base would take him and his contract EASILY
damn right. No team in their right mind would turn that down.

Just like a lot of teams draft BPA, the same applies to other aspects, like FA and trades -- adding elite talent is NEVER a bad thing.

No not saying that what I am saying is for instance you could have gotten Marques Colston, Miles Austin, Jahri Evans, Justin Tuck, and Branyt Mckinnie with the sole contract of andre johnson, so they could have put two pro bowlers on the o line, two on the receiving corps, and one pro bowl edge rusher for the money that he made last year.
Now tell me how much better they would have if they had those five instead of that one. I know that this is hypothetical, but you could literally do this all day long, find 3 or 4 players that are cheaper that combined have an incredibly larger impact.
seriously dont think we would, we have to resign ngata, flacco, rice, and other key positions not to mention the rookie contracts, so no I really doubt we would with the kind of paychecks those guys are going to command, which proves my point I would rather have those 3 guys then one perennial pro bowler.
we could still make it happen, although it would cost us depth at certain other poisitions.

Think of it like this -- would you rather have a $6M nickel back (wilson or foxworth) who sees maybe 50% of our snaps, or an elite WR like Megatron (for a little more)

Its not the same...lol... Suggs make more then the WR's make... Ed Reed is by no means hampering yall... A WR making around 8 million... Would not break you.. Like i said.. If you round out Boldin Contract.. Its like 7 million a year.

You are saying like the WR money would equal Ngata, Flacco, and Rice money put together...

I get what you are saying but its not like how you are putting it

You pointed out the Patriots in one of your post "as the way to go" .. They was paying Moss around 10 million a year... How teams work the bonuses... Players dont see all that money.. They get money up front but it evens out in the backend.

He's had his inconsistencies but to say he's done "jack" is taking it too far.
Oh no don't get me wrong I think the guy will be a solid contributor to the team, it's just that he hasn't proven anything yet and I was just disputing the fact that someone else had referred to him as great draft pick. As he was a 3rd rounder I believe, I think the jury is still out on him just because of his inconsistant play and his acl injury.

yeah in all probability we could, but I would want to make sure that , RR, Flacco, and ngata are locked up for seven years first, and resign wilson, and Yanda still needs to be resigned so I am not sure how much depth I would be willing to put on that.
