Shutdown Showdown:

99 posts in this topic

Who's being a homer? This is a legit question; their draft position means nothing, neither does all the hype leading up to the draft. I think Peterson's game against Alabama was a perfect representation of what he'll do in the NFL -- he'll make great plays, and get beat like a dog on others. Peterson is a special player, but so is Smith.

Jimmy Smith is number three you know that right? Arm tackling is what you have to prove your case, like i said tackling is horrible. He better get his tackling together, because in a league using those arms against a power back is six points. He needs to learn to hit, and wrap up.

You make it seem like he's going to be one of the worst tackling corners in the league, he won't even be the worst tackling CB on our team. JSmith's tackling is the least of my worries with him.

I can not figure out what peoples obsession is with having a "shutdown corner", believe it or not teams win Superbowls without having a "shutdown corner" to name a few.....
-Pittsburgh, 09, 06
-NYG, 08
-Colt, 07
-Ravens, 2000 (YES Ravens, Duane Starks was not considered a shut down corner by any means in 2000, and C-Mac was a rookie who's best ball was a few years away).

McAllister was drafted the year before we won the Superbowl... it was his second season.... (Not Big deal though lol)
Jamal Lewis (5 pick) and Travis Taylor (10 pick garbage player ) were our rookies for the superbowl season in 2000.

I hope week one Jimmy Smith gets scorched by Mike Wallace, so everyone who called him a shutdown corner can shove their foot in their mouth, until then just keep crowning a rookie corner who hasn't played a pro snap a "Shutdown Corner".

Are you even a fan of the Ravens??
The Term " Shutdown Corner" does get thrown around too much these days, and ESPN has done a marvelous job of making D.Revis look like he is so much better than Asomogha or C.Bailey and C.Woodson last 2 have aged but still have consistent play..

Damn can't people look forward to a rookie CB with "potential" to cover some WRs one on one... I know the last 3 seasons has been really annoying watching guys like Frank Walker, Corey Ivy TRY to cover guys and cost us tons of yards in P.I. yards...

Also people on this site generally do go over board with "expectations" I mean one week they call L.Webb a great corner next week he's bum... People do get beat. lol

I want to defend Jimmy's tackling a little bit. A lot of guys who are "hitters" in college are on good teams. Patrick peterson and amukamara were playing on extremely talented teams, they had the luxury of dropping their hips and playing low because if they missed it wasn't that big of a deal. Also there was more traffic around the ball carrier because, frankly, the defenses were better.

On the other hand if Jimmy didn't make the tackle he would almost always be giving up 6. So he played it safe, simply playing high so he would be able to at least wrap up. He stayed on his heels because ball carriers were usually in the open field.

In addition players were almost always playing down hill on him, it would be pretty difficult for him to make an open field tackle like that. That happens to a lot of players, they play safe to make the tackle as opposed to playing big to make the play. I'm pretty sure jimmy will be willing to hit more since if he misses ed will be there to clean up. You can coach a player to break down better.

Let me start by saying I agree with almost everything you said.

I am a Ravens fan, and I'm a realist; and I have a problem with people crowning a rookie who hasn't even entered training camp a "Shutdown Corner". I understand people want to be optimistic, but there is a difference between optimism and being completely silly. There are very few true Shutdown corners in this league today, you could make the argument there are really only two (Revis and Asomogha), and your gonna compare a rookie who has yet to play a down at the Pro level to one of them? I didn't here people calling Flacco the next Peyton Manning his rookie season. My point being, that neither Revis or Asomogha was a "shutdown" corner their rookie season, and that Jimmy Smith needs time to develop into one, if at all.

Now to your point regarding people being excited about a CB with potential to go one on one with a WR. I would say that you don't need to look any further than our current roster. Josh Wilson is 26 and played phenomenally towards the end of last season, including a particularly impressive performance against the best receiver in the NFL in the Houston game. When in man, Wilson shut Andre down, Wilson at 26 hasn't reached his full potential yet, and would love to see him return next season.

I hope Jimmy Smith turns out to be a great player for us. But, I understand that it takes time and practice to be great, not just combine and pro day numbers. Im excited to see Jimmy Smith play, but I'm also extremely high on several of our current corners, and cant understand why people aren't acknowledging how well they played last season.

Someone STILL hasn't figured out that the 'shutdown' label stems from their college careers, nothing else.
