Dilfer Says Boller Should Start

21 posts in this topic

Sportcenter last night (im bad at finding video clips and posting) Dilfer was asked about QB controversies and said that Boller should be the starter in Baltimore.

He also said Alex Smith should be the starter in SF, but what do we care.

What do you think of Dilfer being "qualified" for such an analysis, not that any of these guys are really anything more than armchair quarterbacks at this point...

His analysis didn't even make sense because he said it would not be good for Joe Flacco's development to watch a young player/starter in Troy Smith make "rookie" mistakes. Correct me if I am wrong, but Boller commits MORE turnovers and makes MORE mistakes than Smith does, and Kyle is in his SIXTH year! So, in all honesty, what difference does it make? Now, if he said Flacco should watch Boller to see what NOT to do in the pocket, etc. then that is some good analysis...

Yes but boller reads defenses better and is way more accurate you get to see Kyle make all the throws but Troy is definitley will run around alot

I think he actually misspoke and said that boller doesnt need to see smith making mistakes, so that kinda confused me.

It was 5:45 this morning i was watching so thanks for clearing that up because i was scratching my head, wondering what he was talking about.

umm no, Did you go to training camp at all? The defense made fun of Troy Smith so much for picking Him off AT LEAST TWICE A DAY. At one point when Troy Was starting in TC the Defense said DEFENSE LAY DOWN, and laughed about it.

I don't know what defense we were running, but I know what offense the Vikings were using. It was a little thing called, "Where's Walker." On every play, Tavaris Jackson would find Walker, and throw it to whatever receiver was covering him, because he was always open. In addition, their better runs were all off the right side, Walker's side. Mostly because the receiver could shove him out of the way and quickly make the move to block the safety.

8-0 and a Super Bowl ring...I still don't know about getting rid of him.

We got rid of him because he was a career benchbutt, as he went on to further prove when he left the Ravens. And don't be fooled by the 8-0 mark, the best defence in NFL history pulled that and Trent **** through.

Yeah, we're talking about a defense that in 4 playoff games (including the superbowl) allowed only ONE offensive touchdown.

one offensive touchdown over four games. that's just sick.

It was the biggest mistake in Raven's History. Why couldn't Brian Billick's irrational loyalty have fallen towards Dilfer?

:werd:

Oh, and Dilfer is right. Why wouldn't you want Flacco learning from Boller? He may not execute all that great but hey, neither does Smith. Plus everyone says that Boller is one hell of a smart guy. You really want Flacco learning from a runner?

I just wish Harbaugh would name a starter, I don't care who, so I don't have to come on here every day for news and see it flooded with various opinions on our quarterbacks from the media and from board members bickering and taking sides.

Troy Smith isn't just a runner, he's a LEADER and Flacco can learn more from someone who has more determination and drive to win. Just think about that, thats why Kyle Boller won't ever be a proven starter in the N.F.L.

Leader, determination, drive.....all good things. But they are useless without talent. And unfortunately for us, Smith doesn't have much of that in his arm.

Just a question, how do you learn determination and a drive to win? Lets look at this logically for a second, Troy's upward qualities do not necessarily mesh well with Flacco. Other than having confidence in the huddle, what else could he gain from Smith? Flacco is not going to become a scrambling quarterback, at least as far as I can see, and like I implied earlier, you can't learn determination; you either have it or you don't.

What I believe was Dilfer's point about learning from Boller is that Flacco can learn a lot more from Boller, because their style of play and skill set are more closely related than that of Smith's. Besides that, there is the experience factor where Boller can pass knowledge to Flacco.

And now on to what I believe Dilfer was saying when he said Boller should be the starter,as I have kinda been looking at it the same way. Troy Smith has yet to establish himself as a passer in the NFL., not saying he can't be, just pointing out that he has yet to do so. In contrast, although he is inconsistent, Boller has marched the team down the field with passes. With this in mind, Dilfer was saying that if you put in a quarterback who is no threat as a passer, I.E. has yet to show that if given the chance, has the capability to hurt you through the air, you are basically already saying that you give up on the season before it has begun. Again, not saying that Troy Smith can not be a passer, just saying he has yet to show that he can be a passer in NFL play.

so apparently you all think that if Smith starts the season and plays for a while, when Flacco comes out he decides he wants to be a scrambling quarterback? Pshhh, Joe is gonna do what he knows (and the coaches know) is the best to help him develop as a QB, regardless of what Smith or Boller do. Yeah, sure he'll watch Troy and maybe learn a few things to do and not to do. But you all act like him watching Smith play is gonna make him think he can run a 40 in 4.5 seconds...

Apparently you didn't really read my post. I just said that he could learn more from Kyle because their style of play is more similar than that of Smith, not that Flacco will instantly try to emulate whoever is under center.
